The PlayStation Counter-Strike That Time Forgot

The forgotten PlayStation Counter-Strike was CS:GO on PS3—not an official PS1 or PS2 release. Valve’s 2012 announcement documented its controls, modes, and launch date.

There was an official PlayStation Counter-Strike—but it was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) for PlayStation 3, not a game for the original PlayStation or an official PlayStation 2 release. Valve announced the PS3 version for PlayStation Network in 2012, with support for PlayStation Move, its sharp shooter accessory, and keyboard and mouse.

Which PlayStation got Counter-Strike?

The documented console release was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for PlayStation 3. Valve author Brian Levinthal announced on PlayStation.Blog on August 13, 2012, that it would arrive on PlayStation Network in North America on August 21, 2012. Valve’s PlayStation.Blog announcement is the primary source for the platform, date, launch modes, and supported controls.

That distinction matters because “Counter-Strike on PlayStation” can sound like a PS1 or PS2 release. The official announcement identifies PS3; it does not establish an original PlayStation or retail PS2 edition. Sony’s PlayStation history timeline supplies hardware history, not evidence of a Counter-Strike PS1 port.

What made the PS3 version unusual?

More than a standard controller

Valve said the PS3 version supported PlayStation Move, the PlayStation Move sharp shooter, and keyboard and mouse. Levinthal described the platform as an opportunity to use the console’s “unique qualities.” The announcement also said matchmaking would account for performance and input device, an important qualification given the mix of motion controls and traditional PC-style controls. This documents what Valve planned for the release; it does not establish which devices can be used with the game today.

Modes beyond classic Counter-Strike

Alongside classic gameplay, the announcement named Arms Race and Demolition as additional modes. It did not provide a full mode-by-mode comparison with the PC game, so those names are the extent of the specific PS3 mode details established here.

How it fits with the original Counter-Strike

The PS3 release was not the original game simply arriving late on a Sony console. Valve’s history of the series says the original Counter-Strike began as a mod in 1999. Valve’s Steam listing gives November 1, 2000 as the release date for the distinct original game and describes tactical team missions including attacking sites and rescuing hostages. See Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive About page and the Steam listing for Counter-Strike.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive PlayStation 3; North American PSN date announced for August 21, 2012 Valve’s announcement documents Move, Move sharp shooter, keyboard and mouse support, plus Arms Race and Demolition.

Valve’s 2012 announcement listed a $14.99 launch price and a $11.99 PlayStation Plus pre-order price. Those are historical prices from the announcement, not current prices. The sources establish no relevant sales or player-count figure for the PS3 release.

Was there a Counter-Strike game for PS2?

The PS2 project identified here is a community recreation or demake, not an official retail port. Its creator’s project page describes it as pre-alpha: Counter Stike PS2 project. That is evidence of an unofficial prototype project, not proof that Valve released Counter-Strike for PS2.

Can you still buy or play CS:GO on PS3?

The available official release announcement is historical and does not confirm present-day storefront availability, resale options, or whether online services work. It would be unsafe to treat the 2012 PSN launch as proof that the game can still be purchased or played online now. Check current Sony or Valve storefront and service information before making plans to acquire or play it.
