The Pixel 4 remains my favorite Google smartphone design: it paired a compact 5.7-inch OLED screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate, thoughtful on-device features and hardware that felt distinctive at launch. Those choices still make it interesting, but they do not make every used Pixel 4 a good phone to rely on today. Google no longer provides Android version or security updates for the Pixel 4 or Pixel 4 XL, and a surviving phone’s battery condition depends on that individual device.
Why the Pixel 4 hardware still stands out
This is a personal hardware preference, not a claim that the Pixel 4 is the best phone for everyone or that it remains fast by current standards. Its appeal is the way several specific choices came together in a relatively small phone.
A compact display with a high refresh rate
Google lists the standard Pixel 4 with a 5.7-inch flexible OLED display, 19:9 aspect ratio, 444 ppi resolution and refresh rates up to 90 Hz. It also supports Always-on display and Now Playing. That combination gives the phone a more distinctive character than its size alone suggests: the screen is compact, but its maximum refresh rate was a notable feature at launch. These are Google’s published specifications, not measurements of every surviving handset. Google’s Pixel 4 specifications
Purpose-built processing and security hardware
The Pixel 4 includes 6 GB of LPDDR4x memory, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, Adreno 640 graphics, Google’s Pixel Neural Core and a Titan M security module. In its October 15, 2019 launch announcement, Google described the combination of 6 GB RAM, a 90 Hz display and Pixel Neural Core as making the phone “fast and powerful.” That was launch-era promotional language, not an independent benchmark or evidence of present-day speed. Google positioned on-device processing as a performance and privacy feature, while describing Titan M as a way to protect sensitive data and operating-system integrity. Those historical design intentions should not be mistaken for ongoing security support. Google’s Pixel 4 launch announcement

Useful hardware fundamentals
Google’s published specifications also include 64 GB or 128 GB storage, Qi-certified wireless charging and support for 18 W fast charging with an 18 W charger. The phone was rated IPx8 for water protection. This list explains what the model was designed to offer; it does not establish how a particular used unit performs, whether its charger is included, or whether its physical protection remains intact.
The limitation that changes the buying decision: updates have ended
Google lists both Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL among the phones that no longer receive Android version updates or security updates. The launch announcement promised three years of monthly security updates; that was a launch-era support commitment, not a description of support today. Google’s Pixel software-update schedule
A phone outside its manufacturer’s stated security-update support may still turn on and run apps, but it no longer receives Google’s promised stream of security patches. That is a significant trade-off for a device used for personal accounts, payments, work or other sensitive activity. Whether that trade-off is acceptable depends on your needs and risk tolerance; the available evidence does not establish a specific exploit or the security state of any individual handset.
What to check before using or buying a Pixel 4
Battery condition
The standard Pixel 4’s published battery capacity is 2800 mAh. That original specification cannot tell you how much capacity remains after years of use. Ask about the specific phone’s battery history and assess its real-world runtime before depending on it as a primary device. There is no basis here for assuming every surviving Pixel 4 has the same battery life.

Water resistance and physical condition
Google warns that water resistance is not permanent and may be compromised by normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly or damage. Treat the IPx8 rating as a specification for the model, not a guarantee that a used phone is safe to expose to water. Inspect the device’s condition and avoid relying on water protection where a failure would matter. Google’s Pixel 4 specifications and water-resistance note
Repair safety and service availability
Google’s Pixel 4 safety manual says not to attempt self-repair and recommends having the battery replaced by Google or an authorized service provider. It warns that disassembly can damage the phone and its water resistance, and that an improperly replaced battery may present hazards. The manual does not establish that parts or authorized service are currently available in your area, so confirm availability before making a repair decision. Network compatibility and model identity
Carrier compatibility depends on network and region; Google’s specifications advise checking with carriers. Do not assume an unlocked Pixel 4 works on every carrier. Also distinguish the standard Pixel 4 from the Pixel 4 XL when checking size, cases, accessories or listings: they are separate models, and a fit claim for one should not be assumed to apply to the other.

Google announced a protective case designed for Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, along with the Pixel Stand and a Pixel-compatible wireless car charger. Those announcements show that accessory options existed; they do not guarantee current stock, condition or compatibility of today’s listings. If you buy a case or charger, verify the precise phone model and the accessory’s stated compatibility. The Pixel 4 supports Qi wireless charging, but a specific stand or car charger should still be checked against its product details. Google’s Pixel 4 accessory announcement

The Pixel 4 can appeal to someone who specifically values its compact size, 90 Hz OLED screen and distinctive hardware, and who has checked the condition and compatibility of the particular handset. Its strongest case is as familiar hardware chosen with clear eyes about the compromises—not as a current, fully supported phone.
- Consider it if the design and feature set matter to you and you can accept using a phone without Google security updates.
- Be cautious if you need dependable all-day battery life, water protection, current security updates or confirmed carrier compatibility without checking the individual device.
- Look elsewhere if continued manufacturer security support is a requirement.
The hardware explains why I still favor the Pixel 4 among Google phones; the update status is the practical reason not to recommend it as an uncomplicated everyday choice.
