For progression, Red Barrels’ March 2024 guidance describes Program Genesis as the main route toward Rebirth, with Release Tokens earned by completing Trials and MK-Challenges. Because the official game page lists newer updates through September 2026, check the live in-game board for current programs and requirements.
How a Trial differs from an MK-Challenge
A main Trial is a longer task. An MK-Challenge is a shorter therapy built from a modified or redesigned part of an existing map, according to Red Barrels’ historical Early Access explainer. Both are useful ways to learn how objectives work; the shorter format can offer a more focused introduction to the game’s tasks.

Map spaces may be familiar from run to run, but the route through them, available items, and enemy placements can change. The Epic Games Store’s beginner guide uses “Kill the Snitch” as an example: the broad task remains recognizable, while details such as routes, symbols, or key locations may differ. Learn the objective pattern, but follow the prompt in front of you rather than assuming a remembered route or item location will work again.
How progression works—and what to verify
In its March 2024 launch announcement, Red Barrels called Program Genesis the “Path to Rebirth” and described it as the straightforward campaign and main route to Rebirth. The publisher said Release Protocol required 20 Release Tokens, with two awarded for a Trial and one for an MK-Challenge. It also said tokens could be earned in any Trial, including Programs, Weekly Programs, and Special Events, and that replays awarded full XP and Murkoff Dollars. These are dated publisher statements, not a guarantee of the rules currently active in October 2026; use the live in-game board to check available programs, token requirements, and events. The same announcement said Program X unlocked after one Reborn and Program Ultra after three. Treat those unlock thresholds as the publisher’s March 2024 description, and confirm current requirements in-game before planning around them. The official game page’s newer update listings show why older progression guides should be treated as historical context rather than a substitute for the current board: The Outlast Trials official page.
Choose a Rig for the problem you need to solve
Rigs are cooldown-limited abilities, not permanent upgrades. The Epic beginner guide names Stun, Blind, Heal, and X-Ray; each addresses a different need, so no single choice is best for every Trial or group.
| Rig | Problem it can address | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Stun | Immediate pressure from an enemy | Consider whether stopping a threat fits the way you expect to move through this Trial. |
| Blind | Creating an opportunity to escape or act near danger | The Epic guide recommends it for solo escape utility and says it can help in co-op when reviving near an enemy. |
| Heal | Recovery and team support | The Epic guide presents it as useful support, particularly when teammates can benefit from the recovery. |
| X-Ray | Information about what lies around you | Check its current in-game description and decide whether extra awareness serves your plan. |
That table reflects the Epic guide’s tactical descriptions, not a current balance ranking. Cooldowns, effects, and the value of a Rig depend on your build, the objective, and whether you are alone or with a team. Read the current in-game Rig description before committing to a choice.

Solo or co-op: choose the kind of support you want
| Approach | What it offers | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op | Teammates can coordinate, divide objective tasks, trade items, share healing, and distract enemies while someone else works. | Agree on who is handling which task; uncoordinated movement can waste the team’s advantage. |
| Solo | You set your own pace and make decisions independently. | You have fewer recovery options than a group, so plan around self-reliance. |
Neither approach is the one correct way to learn. Red Barrels said its 1.0 onboarding and difficulty adjustments were intended to support both solo and group players. Pick the format that suits you, then tune your Rig and pace to its trade-offs.

Spend upgrades only after checking their current effects
Loadout systems fill different roles: Rigs provide reusable tools, Prescriptions enhance physical or mental abilities, and Amps strengthen the player, as Red Barrels explained in its historical Early Access explainer. The Epic beginner guide describes Amps as equippable perks and Prescriptions as passive boosts. Its examples include noise reduction, managing sanity effects, extra survival margin, stamina, inventory space, and faster door breaking.
Those examples and their exact effects can be version-sensitive. Before spending resources, inspect the current descriptions in-game and match an upgrade to a problem you actually face; an older guide’s item name or effect may no longer describe your build.
Quick Recap
A practical routine for early runs
- Check the live board. Confirm the current program, event, and requirements in-game rather than relying on an older unlock guide.
- Read the objective prompt. Identify the task you need to complete, then use familiar map knowledge as a guide—not as a guarantee of the next route or item location.
- Choose for your situation. Select a Rig and upgrades based on the Trial, your current build, and whether you are playing solo or with a team.
- Adapt as the run changes. Routes, item availability, and enemy placement can vary; respond to what this run presents instead of forcing a memorized sequence.
- Use the format to learn. Try a shorter MK-Challenge for a focused task or a main Trial for a longer one, then use the live board to see how each contributes to current progression.
