Reviewers praise its role-playing and improvements over the first game, while also reporting sluggish melee, uneven challenge, bugs, and performance rough edges. Whether it suits you depends on your preferred style of play, your platform, and—on PC—whether your hardware meets the requirements.
What kind of game is The Outer Worlds 2?
Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios, The Outer Worlds 2 launched on October 29, 2025. It is a single-player RPG set in Arcadia, where an Earth Directorate agent investigates dangerous rifts amid conflict between the Protectorate, a religious rebellion, and corporate interests. The official game description places player abilities, decisions, and companions at the center of the experience. Xbox’s game page outlines the premise and factions; Obsidian’s page identifies the game and its setting.

That makes its strengths most relevant to players who enjoy shaping a protagonist and navigating competing interests. It is not a multiplayer game: PC Gamer lists multiplayer as “No” in its review. PC Gamer’s review also discusses how combat and challenge affect the experience.

The biggest pros
Choices, factions, and companions support role-playing
Xbox’s description emphasizes that abilities and decisions shape the narrative, with three major power blocs competing in Arcadia. Companions are described as having their own traits, backgrounds, and goals. This is a promising fit if you want dialogue and character decisions to be part of the journey rather than treating the game as a combat-only shooter. Those are the game’s advertised systems, not a guarantee that every decision produces a major story change.

Character building gives you more than one route through the game
Windows Central’s review describes skills such as Engineering and Leadership, perks connected to skills, and the return of character strengths and flaws. Those systems let players make a character that reflects their priorities, though the payoff depends on whether you enjoy choosing and developing an RPG build. Windows Central’s review also reports a new third-person option alongside first-person play.
One reviewer found combat substantially improved
After a 40-hour playthrough, Windows Central reviewer Samuel Tolbert judged combat to have improved substantially over the first game. Tolbert’s broader verdict was that the sequel is “more of the same where it counts, with a couple of key improvements that elevate the whole experience.” That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measured consensus or a promise that every weapon or encounter will feel equally good. Windows Central disclosed that Xbox Game Studios supplied the review code and did not see the review before publication.

The main cons and cautions
Combat quality is not consistent across styles
PC Gamer praises the guns but describes melee as imprecise and sluggish. It also reports uneven encounters and a reverse difficulty curve, where the challenge can feel less demanding as a character develops. Your build and selected difficulty can change how these issues feel, but players seeking tight, consistently balanced action should treat the review’s criticism as a meaningful caution.
Reviews reported bugs and performance rough edges
PC Gamer reported bugs and performance limitations on its review system; Windows Central also mentioned a few bugs. PC Gamer’s review setup used a Radeon RX 9070 XT, Intel Core i5-12600K, and 32 GB of RAM. These are launch-era review observations, not evidence of the current patch state or performance on every platform. Check recent player reports for your specific platform if technical stability is a deciding factor.

- RPG elements added to the game include character customization, experience points, evolution of the game based on players decisions and actions (single player).
Who should play it?
- Consider it if character skills, flaws, companions, faction conflict, and story decisions are the features you most want from an RPG.
- Approach with caution if precise melee combat, evenly escalating difficulty, or launch-polished technical performance is essential to your enjoyment.
- Check before buying on PC if your system is near the listed minimum, especially for Windows version, GPU, SSD, and the 110 GB space requirement.
- Look elsewhere if you need co-op or competitive multiplayer.
