Choose The Operator if you want to examine varied evidence through a fictional computer workstation and support field agents across multiple cases. Choose Her Story if you want to search live-action police-interview footage by typing words and piece together a nonlinear crime narrative. Both are single-player detective games, but their investigative loops are distinctly different.
How the investigation works in each game
The Operator: analyze evidence and assist agents
In The Operator, you play an FDI operator supporting field agents as they investigate cases involving murders, missing people and cyberattacks. Its Steam listing describes a simulated desktop with tools including a video and photo analyzer, citizen and vehicle databases, ChemScan, a notepad and a terminal. The emphasis is on examining case materials and helping investigators working in the field. Steam’s listing for The Operator describes the tools and cases.

Her Story: search interview clips
Her Story puts a police database of live-action footage at the center of the investigation. The archive contains clips from seven interviews, conducted in 1994, about a British woman’s missing husband. Type a word you hear or infer, and the database returns clips in which she says it; the story emerges through the fragments you choose to find and interpret. The official Her Story site describes the premise and its search-based play.

Story, presentation and creator context
The Operator was released on July 22, 2024. Steam lists Bureau 81 as its developer and Bureau 81 and indienova as its publishers. Its casework connects to a broader mystery, according to the store description. Steam’s The Operator page lists the release and credits.
Her Story was released on June 24, 2015. Steam lists Sam Barlow as both developer and publisher, and the official site identifies him as its creator. Barlow describes its accessible search premise this way: “If you can Google, you can play Her Story.” The official Her Story site attributes the statement to him; Steam’s Her Story page lists the release and credits.
