The OpenClaw Setup Nobody Talks About: Local, Offline, and Actually Private

OpenClaw can keep its state on your machine, but hosted models and cloud chat channels still receive data. Here’s how to reduce those dependencies and protect a local Gateway.

Yes, you can run OpenClaw locally, but “local” does not automatically mean offline or private. OpenClaw keeps its sessions, memory, configuration, and workspace on the Gateway host by default. A hosted model provider still receives prompts sent to its API, and a cloud messaging service still handles messages sent through its channel. For a more private setup, choose local inference and a local interface, keep the Gateway off the public internet, and control which people, tools, and plugins it trusts.

What “local,” “offline,” and “private” mean for OpenClaw

These terms describe different parts of the setup. OpenClaw’s Gateway is the long-running process that manages channel connections and its WebSocket control plane. Its location matters: the Gateway host is where OpenClaw’s local state lives by default. That state includes sessions, memory, configuration, and workspace files, according to OpenClaw’s FAQ, “Where things live on disk”.

  • Local: The Gateway and its state are on a machine you control. If you also use a local model runtime, prompts can be processed on that machine rather than sent to a hosted model API.
  • Offline: Ordinary use does not depend on a network connection to a hosted model or messaging service. A local model by itself is not enough if you still interact through a cloud chat platform.
  • Private: Data flows only to services and people you have chosen to trust, and the Gateway is protected against unauthorized access. Local storage helps, but does not establish privacy on its own.

OpenClaw’s FAQ puts the distinction plainly: “No: OpenClaw’s own state is local, but external services still see what you send them.”

Can OpenClaw run locally and offline without cloud services?

A local Gateway and local model can remove a hosted model API from the request path. But if you use Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, or another cloud channel, that service still handles channel traffic. OpenClaw’s FAQ says that local models keep prompts on the machine while messages still pass through channel servers. The same documentation identifies hosted model-provider requests as data sent to provider APIs and notes that chat platforms store message data on their servers: OpenClaw FAQ.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

For a workflow intended to stay disconnected during ordinary use, the coherent design is a local Gateway, a locally available model runtime, and a local interface, with outbound networking restricted to what you deliberately need. That is a way to reduce external dependencies, not a guarantee that every OpenClaw feature works offline or is compatible with an air-gapped environment.

Choose the model path

OpenClaw documents local-model integrations, including Ollama, as well as hosted provider connections. With a hosted provider, prompts routed to that provider leave the Gateway host. With local inference, prompts can remain on the machine running the model. OpenClaw’s documentation does not establish a universal best model, minimum memory requirement, hardware recommendation, or expected speed, so choose a runtime and model based on their own current requirements rather than assuming any computer will be sufficient: OpenClaw provider documentation.

Choose the interaction channel

A local model does not make a cloud chat channel local. If you want to avoid a third-party messaging service in the conversation path, use a local interface rather than relying on a cloud channel. If you do use one, treat it as a separate recipient of channel data—not as a private conduit merely because the Gateway and model run on your own hardware.

Set up a local Gateway with a small exposure surface

OpenClaw’s installation documentation lists macOS, Linux, and Windows installation paths and, as of October 7, 2026, specifies Node.js 24.16+ or 26.1+. It recommends Node 26 and identifies Node 24 as the supported LTS line; these requirements can change, so check the current official install documentation before installing. Desktop companion apps can also provision a local Gateway.

OpenClaw’s configuration and workspace can live in the user’s OpenClaw state directory outside a source checkout, so updating a repository need not overwrite personal configuration. The Gateway host is still the important location: it holds the local state and runs the service that controls connections. See Where things live on disk and the Gateway documentation.

Keep the Gateway local-only by default

For a Gateway used only on its own machine, OpenClaw recommends gateway.bind="loopback". Do not bind the interface directly to 0.0.0.0 or expose it through a public reverse proxy. OpenClaw warns that direct public exposure is unsafe; its security guidance and network guidance describe the safer access patterns.

If you need remote access, keep the Gateway loopback-bound and reach it through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale, with strong Gateway authentication. This makes remote access a controlled path rather than a publicly reachable service: OpenClaw network guidance.

Run the security audit before widening access

OpenClaw’s security guidance describes risky network configurations as findings surfaced by openclaw security audit. Review the findings before enabling remote access or changing the Gateway’s exposure. An audit is a review aid, not a substitute for understanding who can reach the host and what authenticated callers can do: OpenClaw security guidance.

Who can trust the Gateway—and what can it run?

OpenClaw’s security model treats authenticated Gateway callers as trusted operators. It does not recommend using one Gateway for mutually untrusted people. Separate sessions or memory do not make a shared Gateway a per-user authorization boundary. If users do not share a trust boundary, use separate OS users, hosts, or Gateways: OpenClaw security guidance.

Protect the state directory and credentials

The local state directory is not just conversation history. OpenClaw lists configuration, SQLite state, provider state, and credential files among the data kept there. Restrict access to the directory and protect the account that runs the Gateway, because anyone who can access sensitive credentials or operate the Gateway may have meaningful access to the agent’s connected capabilities: OpenClaw FAQ.

Treat models and incoming content as untrusted

OpenClaw’s security guidance says to treat models as untrusted principals and to assume prompt or content injection can influence agent behavior. The protection comes from host trust, authentication, tool policy, sandboxing, and execution approvals—not from assuming that a model will reliably ignore malicious instructions: OpenClaw security guidance.

Install plugins only when you trust their code

Plugins and extensions load in-process and can run with the Gateway process’s operating-system privileges. Treat them as executable code, install only ones you trust, and pin trusted IDs where appropriate. A plugin is not safely isolated just because it is installed locally: OpenClaw security guidance.

Harden Docker deployments

If you run OpenClaw in Docker, the official security guidance recommends using the non-root image user, read-only mode where possible, and dropping capabilities. These measures reduce exposure; they do not guarantee a secure deployment. Review the container’s actual mounts, network access, and permissions as well: OpenClaw security guidance.

Could a Raspberry Pi host OpenClaw?

OpenClaw publishes a Raspberry Pi installation guide, which supports considering a Pi as a dedicated Gateway host: Raspberry Pi installation guide. That guide does not establish that a Raspberry Pi 5—or any particular Pi configuration—can run a useful local language model. Hosting the Gateway and running model inference are separate workloads; do not infer model compatibility, speed, or suitability from the existence of an installation guide.

Use these questions to evaluate a privacy-focused setup

  • Where does inference happen? On your own machine with a local runtime, or at a hosted provider that receives prompts?
  • How do you talk to the agent? Through a local interface, or through a platform that receives and stores channel messages?
  • How is the Gateway reached? Only on loopback, or remotely through a private tunnel with strong authentication?
  • Who can operate it? One person or a group that shares a trust boundary, rather than unrelated users sharing one Gateway?
  • What runs on the host? A Gateway only, or a Gateway plus local inference—and what trusted tools and plugins have access to that process?
