A dated comparison of AngularJS, Backbone.js and Ember.js shows AngularJS leading those three on several community measures, but it cannot establish the five most popular frameworks across the whole frontend landscape. The useful comparison is therefore twofold: what the 2014 evidence can support, and how the three projects approached application structure.
What “most popular” meant in 2014
Popularity depends on the signal. GitHub stars indicate project attention, Stack Overflow questions indicate discussion and troubleshooting activity, and contributor counts reflect participation in a project. Third-party modules measure yet another aspect of an ecosystem. None, alone or combined without a stated method, is a standardized measure of framework adoption.

A University of Oulu thesis published in 2015 reports a snapshot of AngularJS, Backbone.js and Ember.js community indicators measured on August 16, 2014. It does not compare every frontend framework, so its results should be read as a comparison of those three projects—not a ranked list of the field.
| Indicator, measured August 16, 2014 | AngularJS | Backbone.js | Ember.js |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub stars | Approximately 27.2k | Approximately 18.8k | Approximately 11.0k |
| Third-party modules | Approximately 800 | Approximately 236 | Approximately 21 |
| Stack Overflow questions | Approximately 49.5k | Approximately 15.9k | Approximately 6k |
| GitHub contributors | 928 | 230 | 393 |
In this three-project snapshot, AngularJS leads on stars, third-party modules and Stack Overflow question volume. The contributor figures show why the measures are not interchangeable: Ember.js has more reported contributors than Backbone.js, even though Backbone has higher values on the other listed indicators. These numbers are the thesis’s reported counts, not a current tally or a complete market-share measure. University of Oulu thesis.

What the 2014 survey can—and cannot—tell you
Stack Overflow’s 2014 survey article describes 7,500 responses from 96 countries. That provides a broad view of the developers who participated, but it is not a global census and does not establish a definitive top-five frontend-framework ranking. Survey results describe respondents, not every developer or project. Stack Overflow’s 2014 survey article.
Keep survey years separate: Stack Overflow’s 2015 survey reports 26,086 participants from 157 countries and warns that selection and language effects bias its results. Those are 2015 figures, not a substitute for the 2014 sample, and neither survey should be treated as framework market share. Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2015.

How the three frameworks differed
The clearest comparison is architectural, not a claim that one framework was universally faster or easier. Their documentation describes different balances between composable building blocks and built-in conventions.

AngularJS: templates, directives and application building blocks
AngularJS organized applications around HTML templates extended with markup, directives, models, scopes, expressions, controllers and services. This gave developers a defined set of pieces for connecting data and behavior to the view. The thesis’s 2014 comparison also reports AngularJS ahead of Backbone.js and Ember.js on several community indicators, but those figures do not prove it was the most-used framework across the entire frontend field. Backbone.js: smaller primitives connected to an API
Backbone.js supplied models with key-value binding and events, collections, and views with declarative event handling. Its documentation describes connecting those structures to an existing API through RESTful JSON. This comparatively small set of pieces leaves more architectural choices to the developer and can be composed with other tools; the documentation does not claim a single integrated application convention. Ember.js: conventions for an integrated application
The Ember 1.10 guide presented the framework as intended for “ambitious web applications.” It described automatically updating templates, retrieving related server models and a conventional structure designed to support applications as they grow. Those are historical descriptions from the Ember 1.10 guide; they should not be read as a description of every later Ember release. Ember 1.0 had been announced on August 31, 2013. How to read the comparison today
The figures answer a narrow historical question: among three named projects, which had higher values for selected community indicators at a particular date? They do not establish a comprehensive ranking of five frameworks. Nor do stars, modules, question counts and contributors measure performance, ease of use or suitability for a particular application. Those decisions require different evidence and depend on project needs.
One later development matters if you are considering AngularJS now: the official AngularJS documentation says support ended in January 2022. AngularJS (the 1.x project discussed here) is distinct from the newer Angular project. A framework’s 2014 popularity does not imply present-day support. AngularJS version support status.
Best Value
For a historically grounded takeaway, AngularJS leads this particular three-project snapshot across several reported indicators, while Backbone.js and Ember.js represent meaningfully different architectural approaches. The available evidence does not justify naming an objective top five for 2014.
