And several notorious examples are not technically viruses. This comparison covers five landmark incidents, distinguishes what each did, and treats historical damage estimates with appropriate caution.
What makes a computer virus dangerous?
“Computer virus” is often used casually to mean any malware, but the terms describe different things. A virus attaches itself to a host program; a worm can spread independently across systems or networks. Ransomware encrypts files to demand payment. One incident can combine categories: WannaCry, for example, was ransomware with a worm component.

Danger can be measured by how quickly malware propagates, how many systems or organizations it reaches, whether it disrupts operations or damages data, and the financial consequences. Historical cost estimates use different methods and often cannot be compared directly, so the cases below are not presented as a numerical ranking.

| Incident | How it spread | Main impact | Reported reach or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morris worm | Worm that propagated independently | Disrupted systems; the FBI says it did not damage or destroy files | No comparable figure stated by the FBI account |
| Melissa | Email-related spread | Disrupted systems and drew attention to unsolicited email attachments | FBI estimated $80 million in cleanup and repair costs in 2019; this is not a complete estimate of all social or economic impact |
| ILOVEYOU | Email attachment; after it was opened and run, it used Outlook address books to send copies | Could overwrite or replace files and caused broad disruption | Early estimates ranged from $100 million to more than $10 billion, but the testimony author said they had no basis to assess overall loss |
| WannaCry | Ransomware with a worm component exploiting Windows SMBv1 vulnerabilities | Encrypted files and spread across networks | Hundreds of thousands of infections in over 150 countries within days, according to a 2017 DHS/NCCIC review |
| NotPetya | Disruptive malware that masqueraded as ransomware | Caused extensive collateral damage | CISA and partner governments said it damaged millions of devices globally in a 2022 advisory; no comparable audited dollar-loss figure is stated there |
How each incident became consequential
Morris worm: disruption without file destruction
The Morris worm is an early example of why malware need not erase data to be dangerous. The FBI account says it disrupted systems but did not damage or destroy files, and describes the incident as a major early Internet attack that prompted an investigation. The FBI also distinguishes a worm, which propagates independently, from a virus, which uses a software host. FBI: Morris worm

Melissa: email behavior and costly cleanup
Melissa disrupted systems and helped raise awareness about unsolicited email attachments. The FBI put cleanup and repair costs at an estimated $80 million in 2019; that figure describes those costs, not a comprehensive accounting of the incident’s total impact. FBI: Melissa virus 20th anniversary
ILOVEYOU: an attachment that abused address books
ILOVEYOU arrived as an email attachment. When opened and run, it used Outlook address books to send copies and could overwrite or replace files. FBI testimony describes broad disruption, but cautions that total losses were difficult to establish. It recounts early estimates from $100 million to more than $10 billion while explicitly saying the author had no basis to comment on the overall loss; the range should not be treated as an agreed final damage total. WannaCry: ransomware that could spread like a worm
WannaCry combined file encryption with worm-like propagation. CISA describes it as ransomware with a worm component that exploited vulnerabilities in Windows SMBv1 to compromise systems, encrypt files, and spread. A 2017 DHS/NCCIC review reported hundreds of thousands of infections in more than 150 countries within days. These figures indicate reach, not a verified count of permanent losses or a dollar-cost estimate. CISA: WannaCry ransomware DHS/NCCIC: WannaCry year in review
The defensive lesson is specific: CISA’s fact sheet says systems with the MS17-010 security update installed were not vulnerable to the exploits used in the attack. CISA also advises isolating infected systems to prevent further compromise and identifies backups as a path to recovery. CISA: WannaCry ransomware

NotPetya: ransomware appearance, destructive consequences
NotPetya looked like ransomware, but CISA and partner governments describe it as disruptive malware that masqueraded as ransomware and caused damage to millions of devices globally. That is a reported device-damage figure, not a count of verified individual victims. The advisory does not provide a comparable audited dollar-loss figure, so it cannot support a direct cost comparison with Melissa or the uncertain early estimates for ILOVEYOU. The sources do not establish a defensible overall winner. They measure different things: the Melissa figure is an FBI estimate of cleanup and repair costs; the ILOVEYOU range consists of early estimates that its cited testimony explicitly does not validate; WannaCry’s figures describe reported infections and geographic reach; NotPetya’s describe damage to devices. Those numbers cannot be ranked as though they were calculated on the same basis.

The incidents illustrate different kinds of danger instead. Morris shows how propagation can disrupt systems without destroying files. Melissa and ILOVEYOU demonstrate the risks of email-based spread and unsafe attachment handling. WannaCry shows how a vulnerability could enable ransomware to spread between machines. NotPetya shows that malware presented as ransomware can cause broad disruptive damage without a comparable audited loss estimate.

How to reduce the risk and prepare to recover
- Keep supported operating systems and software updated. CISA recommends patching software and operating systems as part of ransomware defense. The WannaCry incident also demonstrates the importance of installing the relevant security update rather than relying on an antivirus product alone. CISA: Ransomware guide
- Be cautious with unexpected attachments. Melissa and ILOVEYOU both underscore how email-related behavior can help malware spread. Verify an unexpected attachment through a separate trusted channel before opening or running it.
- Keep backups that malware cannot readily reach. A separate external drive kept disconnected when not in use is one possible offline backup. CISA identifies backups as a recovery path; they are not a substitute for preventing compromise, and a backup that remains connected may be exposed to an infected computer. CISA: WannaCry ransomware CISA: Ransomware guide
- Isolate a suspected infected device. Disconnect it from networks to limit further compromise, then use an appropriate incident-response or IT support process. CISA specifically recommends isolating infected systems in its WannaCry guidance. CISA: WannaCry ransomware
- Use antivirus or endpoint protection as one layer, not a guarantee. No single product can be assumed to prevent every infection; updates, careful handling, and recoverable backups address different parts of the risk.
