Inspect the actual diff before changing or normalizing the file: the display alone cannot identify the cause.
Why a one-word edit can show a huge diff
Markdown files are plain text, but text files also contain invisible characters and formatting details. Line endings can differ between operating systems, and Git settings or repository rules can convert them. If that conversion affects many lines, Git may show widespread changes alongside your word edit. Whitespace differences can also make a diff look larger than the textual change. GitHub’s line-ending guide explains how operating-system conventions, core.autocrlf, and .gitattributes affect line-ending handling.

That makes line endings and whitespace sensible first checks, not a diagnosis. The exact cause depends on the file, Git configuration, repository policy, and editor behavior.

How to inspect the diff without changing the file
-
Start with the ordinary diff:
git diff -- path/to/file.md. Look for changes repeated across many lines, carriage-return markers, trailing whitespace, or other formatting changes. Git documents whitespace-related diff options in its diff reference.#1 Best Overall
-
Check whether end-of-line whitespace contributes:
git diff --ignore-space-at-eol -- path/to/file.md. If this output is much smaller, end-of-line whitespace differences are contributing to the displayed changes. It does not establish why they appeared, and it does not modify the file. -
If needed, compare with broader whitespace rules:
git diff --ignore-space-change -- path/to/file.mdorgit diff --ignore-all-space -- path/to/file.md. These options hide progressively broader categories of whitespace changes in the comparison, so use them to investigate—not as proof that the underlying file is correct.Rank #2
-
Isolate the word-level change with
git diff --word-diff -- path/to/file.md. This can make the edited words easier to spot, though Git calculates word diff from its ordinary line-based diff, so the result may still contain larger hunks than a dedicated word-by-word comparison.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check the repository’s line-ending policy
If the diff points to line endings, inspect the effective Git settings and the repository’s .gitattributes rules for the file. The Git configuration reference describes core.autocrlf and core.eol; GitHub’s guide explains how a repository can use .gitattributes to specify line-ending behavior.
A repository-level rule gives contributors a shared policy, while core.autocrlf is a local setting that can affect how Git handles text on an individual machine. The right choice depends on the project’s existing conventions and the tools its contributors use. Avoid changing a global or repository-wide setting just to make one diff look smaller; coordinate policy changes with the project.
Check Markdown rendering separately
A visually noisy diff and a rendering change are related possibilities, but they are not the same question. In GitHub’s Markdown Basics guide, a single newline within a paragraph is treated as a space. Two trailing spaces or a backslash create a line break. So whitespace that looks insignificant in a diff may affect how Markdown is displayed.

Do not normalize or restore the whole file until you know the repository’s expected line-ending policy and have examined what changed. Git’s configuration documentation warns that conversion of files with mixed line endings can be irreversible. First preserve your work, then determine whether the changes are your intended edit, formatting noise, or both; only apply a conversion that matches the project’s policy.
