To move the cursor precisely on an iPhone, touch and hold the keyboard’s Space bar until the keys fade and their letters disappear, then slide your finger across the keyboard. It becomes a temporary trackpad, letting you place the insertion point without tapping between letters.
How to use the iPhone keyboard as a trackpad
- Open an editable text field. Tap where you can type so the onscreen keyboard appears.
- Press and hold the Space bar. Keep holding with one finger until the keyboard turns light gray and the characters on the keys disappear. That visual change signals trackpad mode, as Apple describes in its iPhone text-editing guide.
- Slide to position the cursor. Without lifting your finger, move it around the keyboard area. The insertion point follows your movement through the text. Apple’s onscreen keyboard guide documents the same slide-to-move action.
- Lift your finger when the cursor is where you want it. The keyboard returns to normal, and you can continue typing or editing at that position.
Select text while moving the cursor
Trackpad mode can also help select a passage. Keep the keyboard engaged, touch and hold the keyboard with a second finger, and move the first finger to adjust the selection. This gives you a way to extend or refine a selection by moving through the text rather than trying to tap precisely between characters.

- Select a word: Double-tap it.
- Select a paragraph: Triple-tap within it.
- Select a larger block: Double-tap and hold the first word, then drag the selection handles.
- Copy, cut, or paste with gestures: Pinch closed with three fingers to copy; pinch closed twice to cut; pinch open with three fingers to paste.
- Undo or redo: Swipe left with three fingers for Undo or right with three fingers for Redo, then tap the control that appears.
- Move selected text within an app: Touch and hold the selected text until it lifts, then drag it to the new position.
Where the Space bar trick applies
Apple documents the gesture for editable text fields on iPhone. Its guides do not provide a complete app-by-app compatibility list, so behavior may vary across third-party apps or keyboard configurations. If holding the Space bar does not switch modes, check that the onscreen keyboard is active in an editable field and look for the light-gray keyboard with its key characters hidden.
