Apple’s seventh-generation iPad mini launched in October 2024 as the iPad mini (A17 Pro). Its chip has a six-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine, but a five-core GPU—one fewer GPU core than the A17 Pro listed for the iPhone 15 Pro. That confirms a reduced GPU configuration, not proof of a slower CPU, defective silicon, or an Apple-defined “lower-end” chip.
The pre-launch claim that the mini may use a lower-end A17 Pro was therefore partly borne out. The released product is best described as an A17 Pro configuration customized for the tablet, with the missing GPU core being the clear specification-level difference.
What Apple actually shipped
Apple’s specifications identify the 2024 model as the iPad mini (A17 Pro). It is an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina LCD tablet with a 2266 × 1488 resolution, 326 pixels per inch and 500 nits of brightness. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

This was not a new budget tier. Current buyer-guide coverage lists the 128GB Wi-Fi model from $499, while the lower-priced entry point in Apple’s tablet range is the base iPad. Check Apple’s live iPad mini store page for current regional pricing, promotions and taxes.
How the mini compares with the iPhone 15 Pro
The branding is similar, but the publicly listed configurations are not identical. Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro specifications list the familiar six-core CPU, six-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine.
| Component | iPad mini (A17 Pro) | iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Performance CPU cores | 2 | 2 |
| Efficiency CPU cores | 4 | 4 |
| GPU cores | 5 | 6 |
| Neural Engine | 16-core | 16-core |
| Device class | Tablet | Smartphone |
The one directly verifiable difference is the GPU count. Both specifications show the same CPU core arrangement and a 16-core Neural Engine. Core counts alone do not reveal clock speeds, memory bandwidth, power limits or sustained performance, so they cannot produce a reliable overall performance percentage.
What “lower-end A17 Pro” could mean
Fewer active GPU cores: confirmed
Apple explicitly lists five GPU cores in the mini, compared with six in the iPhone 15 Pro specification. This is a lower-GPU-core configuration.

Lower CPU or GPU clocks: not established
Apple’s public technical specifications do not disclose clock speeds or identify a separate model number that proves the mini’s CPU is underclocked. It is therefore inaccurate to state that the mini has a slower CPU as fact.
Binning or “defective” silicon: unconfirmed
Semiconductor makers can disable a core, or assign chips to different tiers, as part of yield management. A disabled GPU core does not prove that the remaining silicon is defective. Apple has not said that the mini’s chip was binned, nor has it described it as “A17 Pro Lite” or “A17 Pro SE.”
Power and thermal limits: possible, not measured here
The mini’s chassis, battery and cooling design could produce different sustained limits from a phone. Its larger body might help dissipate heat, while its compact battery and enclosure could encourage conservative power settings. Without controlled testing, neither outcome should be presented as established.
Is the iPad mini actually slower?
At the specification level, the mini has one fewer GPU core. That may reduce parallel graphics resources, but it does not mean the entire tablet is proportionally slower. One missing core cannot be converted into a guaranteed 16.7% performance loss.

Workloads more likely to expose the difference
- 3D games with demanding graphics settings
- GPU-accelerated creative and rendering applications
- Graphics-heavy professional workflows
- Some machine-learning tasks that use the GPU rather than the Neural Engine
- Long, sustained workloads where power and thermal limits accumulate
Workloads where it is unlikely to matter much
- Web browsing, reading and email
- Note-taking and messaging
- Video streaming
- General iPadOS navigation
- Most ordinary productivity applications
Games can also be CPU-limited, memory-limited or capped by a software frame-rate target. A six-core GPU phone is not automatically faster in every task than a five-core GPU tablet; operating-system versions, thermal state, workload design and sustained power behavior all matter.
Why might Apple have used five GPU cores?
Apple has not published a reason. Several explanations are technically plausible, but they remain analysis rather than confirmed company policy.
- Die harvesting: disabling one core can allow a partially functional die to ship.
- Product segmentation: a reduced GPU configuration can separate the mini from Pro-branded phones without changing the A17 Pro name.
- Power and thermal targeting: the chosen configuration may fit the mini’s battery and enclosure.
- Supply optimization: using partially enabled chips can improve manufacturing yield.
- Display demands: the mini’s 2266 × 1488 panel places less rendering demand on the GPU than a larger, higher-resolution tablet display.
None of these possibilities proves that Apple disabled a faulty core or deliberately imposed a particular performance cap.
What the original rumor got right—and wrong
Before launch, MacRumors summarized Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman as expecting a processor upgrade with relatively few other changes: MacRumors’ report. That pre-launch framing was reasonable at the time, but the product has now shipped and should not be described as merely speculative.

Several different ideas were later blended together under “lower-end iPad mini”:
- A separate, cheaper mini model.
- A lower-specification A17 Pro inside the existing mini.
- The five-core GPU configuration Apple actually shipped.
- A future successor using a newer but cut-down chip.
Only the third item is confirmed for the 2024 product. The mini was not introduced as a separately marketed budget tablet, and its reduced GPU count does not establish a lower CPU clock or a lower-quality die.

The mini’s appeal is its combination of compact size and high-end silicon, not bargain pricing. Current buyer-guide coverage lists the 11th-generation base iPad from $349 and identifies it with an A16 chip: MacRumors’ current iPad guide. Verify prices before publishing or purchasing because Apple can change storage tiers, regional pricing and promotions.
Choose the iPad mini when
- One-hand use, travel and compactness matter more than screen size.
- You want A17 Pro-class CPU performance and Apple Intelligence support.
- You need Apple Pencil Pro compatibility in a small tablet.
- You are comfortable paying a premium over the base iPad.
Choose the 11th-generation iPad when
- The lowest entry price and a larger screen are priorities.
- Your work is browsing, streaming, schoolwork and basic productivity.
- You do not need the mini’s portability or A17 Pro feature set.
Apple positions the iPad Air for buyers who want a larger display and more headroom for creative or multitasking work. The iPad Pro targets professional workflows, premium display requirements and the strongest sustained performance. Both are more expensive and less portable than the mini, so they solve different problems.

For handwriting, sketching and markup, the Apple Pencil Pro is a relevant companion because the iPad mini supports it. It is unnecessary for readers who mainly browse or watch video.
How to interpret future benchmark claims
A credible comparison should identify the benchmark version, iPadOS and iOS builds, storage capacities, battery state, ambient conditions, plugged-in or battery operation, thermal state and whether results are single runs or averages. A short burst score can obscure sustained behavior, and results from different software versions are not directly interchangeable.
Verdict
Calling the 2024 iPad mini’s processor a “lower-end A17 Pro” is directionally understandable but technically imprecise. Apple shipped an A17 Pro configuration with a five-core GPU, while retaining six CPU cores and a 16-core Neural Engine. That difference may matter in sustained graphics work and demanding games, but it does not prove a slower CPU, defective silicon or a fixed overall performance penalty. For everyday tablet use, the mini remains a high-performance device; its defining trade-off is one fewer GPU core in exchange for the compact form factor and feature set.
