A multi-node test on one computer can show that parts of a distributed system work together; it cannot show that a new node can find and reach peers across the internet. ENTENCY’s project update describes the next challenge for its Global Network System (GNS): joining from a machine with no preconfigured development peer, while distinguishing a possible route from a verified connection. The update reports groundwork for that test, not a successful public-internet bootstrap.
Why localhost is an incomplete test
ENTENCY describes GNS as distributed infrastructure beneath ENTENCY UP, its browser and workstation runtime. The project overview says GNS supports peer discovery and communication, with areas that include authenticated transport, identity, storage, streaming, compute coordination, hosting, reputation, accounting, state, and diagnostics. Those are project descriptions, not an independent assessment of deployed capabilities.

Nodes on one computer or local network operate under relatively controlled conditions. Internet-facing nodes may be behind NAT or routers, have changing addresses, face firewall restrictions, or disappear temporarily. A newly started node also needs some way to learn where to begin. The project update’s central question is whether a fresh node can discover a trustworthy path into the network without relying on development shortcuts.

Discovery: where might a peer be?
A node can learn an address or endpoint from another source. That information identifies a possible connection attempt; it does not show that the endpoint is online, accepts incoming traffic, or is actually part of the network.

Authentication and verification: who or what is on the other end?
Before treating a candidate as a trusted peer, a node needs to verify identity and evaluate the evidence associated with the path. ENTENCY’s update reports work on persistent Ed25519 transport identities and authenticated connection establishment. It also describes learned bootstrap information as carrying provenance and freshness limits, with bounds intended to prevent malformed or conflicting data from automatically becoming trusted network state.
Connected state: is there a usable path?
A usable connection is a stronger result than knowing an address or authenticating a peer. The update says endpoint management classifies candidate paths rather than treating every discovered address as reachable. Its guiding distinction is concise: “knowing an address is not the same as proving reachability.”

What the update says has been built
According to the project author, the work so far addresses several foundations for operation beyond a controlled development environment:

- Transport identity: persistent Ed25519 identities and authenticated connection establishment.
- Bootstrap handling: health tracking and retries for bootstrap seeds.
- Endpoint management: classifying possible paths rather than assuming that discovery makes an endpoint reachable.
- NAT traversal groundwork: UPnP discovery and mapping work, including lifecycle handling, renewal, expiry, and cleanup.
- Bootstrap knowledge: provenance, freshness, and boundedness intended to keep bad or conflicting information from becoming trusted automatically.
These are reported implementation areas, not evidence that a fresh node has successfully joined over the public internet. In particular, observing an external address through network setup does not establish that another machine can reach the node through it.

What the fresh-node baseline revealed
In the reported local baseline, a fresh node returned NO_BOOTSTRAP_KNOWLEDGE. The author says components exist and that knowledge can be propagated and persisted, but the baseline still lacks independent external bootstrap knowledge to discover the wider network. In practical terms, a node that starts without a configured entry point cannot use the mere existence of discovery components to find its first peer.
The next test: join without a development peer
The stated next milestone is to start a fresh GNS node on a machine that knows nothing about the network and let it find a path in—without a manually configured development peer or a localhost assumption. For that test to demonstrate more than local integration, evidence would need to distinguish independent bootstrap availability, authenticated peer identity, a verified usable path, and enough diagnostics to explain failures. The update does not report measured public-network results or say that this milestone has passed.

That distinction matters when reading progress claims: successful communication among development nodes can validate components, but it does not by itself establish that an unconfigured node can bootstrap under real internet conditions. The public-internet outcome remains unresolved in the project update.
