Data science is expanding beyond model building: teams are putting more emphasis on trustworthy data, reusable machine-learning workflows, responsible AI, and choosing where computation should happen. Edge computing adds an important placement option—running some analytics or inference on a device, gateway, or nearby server rather than sending every task to a cloud or on-premises system. The right mix depends on the workload, its constraints, and the organization’s ability to operate it.
What are the emerging trends in data science?
Several developments are changing how data science work is designed and delivered. They are complementary approaches, not a checklist every organization needs to adopt. Gartner’s overview brings together platform, data, and modeling trends, including some presented as ongoing guidance rather than brand-new inventions. Gartner’s Key Trends in Data and Analytics is a useful taxonomy.

Data-centric and governed practice
Model selection still matters, but so do data quality, provenance, reproducibility, and monitoring. Inaccurate, incomplete, or malicious data can undermine analysis and models, so governance needs to reflect the business context in which data is collected and used. Gartner identifies synthetic data, feature stores, federated learning, and graph data science as methods relevant to particular needs: synthetic data can reduce reliance on real-world examples and labeling; feature stores support reuse and reproducibility; federated learning can support model development across distributed data under a suitable privacy design; and graph methods can help with problems centered on relationships.
These methods do not remove the need to validate data or fit every problem. Synthetic data can have limitations of its own, a feature store does not make an unreliable source trustworthy, and federated learning is not a blanket privacy guarantee. The choice should follow the data, task, and governance requirements.
Machine learning platforms for more roles
Data science platforms are increasingly designed to support analysts, business users, and software engineers as well as specialist data scientists. Reusable recipes and blueprints let teams build on established workflows instead of starting from scratch. Responsible AI tooling can help record model-development actions and support monitoring across the model lifecycle. Broader access is useful only when teams also have appropriate permissions, data controls, review, and accountability.
Foundation models and composite AI
Foundation models, including transformer-based models, are one part of the expanding toolkit. Composite AI combines different techniques to address a task. A foundation model is a model family; composite AI is an approach to combining methods. Neither makes a large language model necessary for every workflow, and combining techniques does not automatically improve accuracy, reliability, or cost.
What is edge computing, and how is edge AI used in data science?
Edge computing places computation near the point where data is generated. An edge AI system applies AI techniques on an Internet of Things (IoT) endpoint, gateway, or edge server. Depending on the application, it can process a stream or produce an inference locally instead of sending all raw inputs elsewhere first. Gartner describes uses ranging from autonomous vehicles to streaming analytics. Its 2025 cross-industry edge study abstract describes a sample of 210 deployments across seven industries; that sample description is not, by itself, a claim about overall adoption or comparative performance. Gartner’s study page was published May 30, 2025.

Local processing can be a fit when a particular task needs an immediate response, needs to operate through intermittent connectivity, or benefits from reducing the movement of raw data. Those are potential design benefits, not guaranteed results: an edge device may have limited compute and memory, and the full system still needs a way to secure, maintain, update, and monitor its devices and models.
Edge AI is not the same as putting an entire data platform on a device
A deployment can split work across tiers. A sensor or device may filter or score incoming data; a gateway or nearby server may handle additional processing; and a cloud or on-premises environment may support centralized analysis, storage, training, or fleet management. The right division depends on the application and its operational requirements. Edge describes where some computation runs, not a requirement to move every data science task out of a central environment.
Should data be processed at the edge or in the cloud?
There is no universal winner. Deloitte frames a three-tier hybrid architecture as cloud for elasticity, on-premises for consistency, and edge for immediacy. That is a useful way to compare roles, not a prescription or a measured performance ranking. Deloitte’s 2026 Tech Trends report announcement was published December 10, 2025.
Rank #3
| Placement | Potential strength | Trade-offs to assess | Useful framing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge device, gateway, or nearby server | Immediacy and processing close to where data is generated | Device resource limits; fleet security and updates; intermittent connectivity; operational complexity | Consider for specific local or time-sensitive tasks, not as the default for every model |
| On-premises | Consistency with local systems and operational control | Capital and maintenance burden; capacity planning; scaling constraints | One tier in a hybrid architecture |
| Cloud | Elasticity and centralized capacity | Data movement; recurring usage cost; latency and connectivity dependence | Useful when flexible centralized compute or shared services matter |
Use the workload to make the placement decision
Before choosing a tier, map the constraints for the specific task. A useful comparison includes:
- Response time: Does the task need a local result quickly, or can it wait for a round trip to a central service?
- Data movement: How much data must move, and what bandwidth, storage, and transfer costs does that create?
- Privacy and governance: Which data may be processed or retained at each location, and what controls and records are required?
- Reliability: What should continue working if connectivity is unavailable, and how will results be reconciled later?
- Capacity: Can the selected device or environment run the workload within its compute and memory limits?
- Operations and cost: Who maintains hardware, software, security, model updates, and monitoring—and what is the total operating cost?
These considerations can point to a hybrid design: keep a time-sensitive function near the source while using centralized infrastructure for work that benefits from shared capacity or consistent management. A proof of concept should test the actual business outcome and operating demands rather than assume that moving computation to the edge will improve performance.
What foundations does data science need to scale?
Models and platforms depend on more than algorithms. The World Bank’s “four Cs” offer a practical lens: connectivity, compute, context (data), and competency (skills). Connectivity includes the energy and digital infrastructure needed to run systems; compute includes chips, data centers, and cloud resources; context means relevant data; and competency means people able to develop, deploy, and operate AI. The World Bank says lower- and middle-income countries face steep challenges adapting and deploying AI effectively at scale.

The World Bank also describes “Small AI”: more affordable, easier-to-use applications designed for everyday devices such as mobile phones. It identifies potential applications in areas including agriculture, health, and education. Small AI and edge computing can broaden where some AI tasks run, but neither removes the need for power, maintenance, appropriate data, connectivity for some functions, or organizational skills. The World Bank’s Digital Progress and Trends Report 2025: AI Foundations provides the report summary.
Policy goals should also be distinguished from installed infrastructure. The European Commission’s Digital Decade target is 10,000 climate-neutral and highly secure edge nodes in the EU by 2030. This is a target, not an achieved deployment count. The Commission’s Edge Observatory describes the target and monitoring initiative.

What risks and governance should teams plan for?
Data science systems need controls across the data, model, and deployment lifecycle. At the edge, the set of locations and devices that must be protected can expand; central AI systems also have risks. Deloitte’s 2026 Tech Trends report identifies concerns including shadow AI, adversarial attacks, and intrinsic system weaknesses. Gartner highlights data governance and responsible AI tooling. Neither a central deployment nor a local one is automatically secure.
- Track data provenance and apply quality checks before analysis or training.
- Set access controls for data, models, devices, and the people or services that manage them.
- Monitor model behavior and deployment conditions, and define who reviews issues and can intervene.
- For edge fleets, plan how devices receive secure updates and how disconnected or failed devices are handled.
- Use privacy-preserving approaches such as federated learning only when the system design and governance support the intended protections.
- Set governance to the use case and business context; test proposals with proofs of concept tied to stated outcomes.
Deloitte also reports that 11% of organizations had successfully deployed AI agents in production. That figure, from its 2026 Tech Trends report, concerns AI agents generally; it is not an edge-computing adoption rate or a measure of data science workforce adoption.
What the future is likely to require from data science teams
The direction is toward more reusable workflows, stronger data practices, wider participation, and a broader choice of modeling methods and deployment locations. Edge computing makes placement part of the design: decide which tasks benefit from local processing and which need centralized capacity, then account for security, governance, connectivity, and ongoing operations. The strongest architecture is the one that meets the workload’s requirements and can be maintained—not the one that adopts the newest technique by default.
