A co-op group can divide gathering, construction, combat, exploration and rescue, so one mistake does not always end an encounter. The game supports cooperative sessions of up to eight players.
That does not make multiplayer a no-danger mode. The Forest applies multiplayer balancing and host-controlled settings can change enemy pressure and survival rules. Singleplayer remains the more demanding and frightening option for most people because one survivor must perform every job while exposed to every threat alone.

The short answer
Choose multiplayer if your priority is learning the systems, building a base efficiently, sharing danger or recovering from mistakes. Choose singleplayer if you want isolation, uninterrupted pacing and the strongest horror atmosphere.

The practical difference is workload. In solo play, the same person must collect logs, find food and water, monitor health, build defenses, fight cannibals and mutants, navigate caves and remember the next story objective. In co-op, those jobs can be split between players and several people can react to the same threat.
Multiplayer can still feel difficult. Enemy behavior and frequency are subject to multiplayer balancing, and the host’s game-mode settings affect the session. There is no authoritative published comparison of deaths, completion rates, enemy counts or finishing time between the two modes, so “easier” is a reasoned gameplay judgment based on the options co-op gives you, not a measured win-rate claim.
What “easier” means in The Forest
Players usually mean several different things when they ask whether The Forest is easier with friends. Separating them gives a more useful answer than simply counting enemies.
Less work per player
A solo survivor must carry out every routine task. In a group, one player can gather logs while another collects food, a third scouts the perimeter and a fourth expands the shelter. The total amount of work in the world does not disappear, but each person has fewer simultaneous obligations.
More ways to recover from mistakes
A failed ambush, missed block or bad cave route is more forgiving when a teammate can distract an enemy, attack from another angle or assist a downed player. Alone, a mistake can end an encounter immediately because there is no one to create space while you heal or retreat.

Different pressure, not no pressure
Co-op has its own balancing. The game does not simply leave the solo threat model unchanged while adding extra survivors, and host settings can alter enemy behavior, resource availability and survival effects. A larger party therefore gains options without receiving a guarantee of lower danger.
A different kind of fear
Solo play preserves silence, isolation and a self-directed pace. Voice chat, construction and shared discoveries reduce that isolation in multiplayer, although caves, night attacks and environmental hazards can remain tense with a full group.

| Factor | Singleplayer | Multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Task workload | One player gathers, builds, fights, explores and manages survival. | Players can divide jobs and cover one another. |
| Combat recovery | A mistake can end an encounter quickly because no teammate is present. | Teammates can distract enemies, assist a downed player and attack from multiple angles. |
| Enemy pressure | Uses the solo experience’s baseline balance. | Multiplayer-specific balancing can alter pressure; the host’s settings matter. |
| Horror and pacing | More isolated, quiet and self-paced. | Conversation and shared activity reduce isolation, but attacks and caves remain dangerous. |
| Story and exploration | Best for uninterrupted personal pacing. | Best for discussing discoveries and sharing progress. |
| Reliability | No scheduling, connection or host-availability problem. | Depends on friends being available and cooperating. |
Why co-op is usually easier for beginners
Tasks can be divided deliberately
Early survival asks for several competing priorities: shelter, fire, food, water, tools and defensive space. A group can assign those jobs instead of forcing one player to interrupt every task whenever another need appears.
- Builder: places shelters, fires, storage and defensive structures.
- Gatherer: collects logs, sticks, rocks, food and other materials.
- Scout: maps nearby landmarks, watches for patrols and marks useful resources.
- Fighter: draws enemy attention or attacks while others finish a task.
These roles do not need to be permanent. Rotating them prevents one player from becoming responsible for every dangerous or repetitive job.
Several players can control one encounter
Enemies are easier to manage when they cannot focus on a lone survivor continuously. One player can draw attention while another attacks from the side; a third can create distance, heal or retrieve supplies. This is especially valuable when a fight starts unexpectedly while the group is carrying materials or returning from a cave.

Learning is less punishing
New players must learn crafting, stamina management, blocking, stealth, shelter placement and cave navigation. In co-op, an experienced teammate can explain a system while the learner experiments. The group can also recover more effectively after an unplanned night outside the base or a failed expedition.
Construction scales well with cooperation
Large bases require repeated resource runs and considerable building time. Several players can gather and transport materials while another lays out the structure. Shared construction also makes defensive planning easier because someone can watch the perimeter while the builder works.
Why multiplayer does not automatically make the game easy
Enemy behavior is balanced for co-op
The official game-mode reference documents multiplayer balance adjustments. Enemy frequency or pressure can differ from the solo experience, so a party should not assume that adding players simply reduces the number of threats each person sees.
The host controls important settings
Some game-mode options in multiplayer must be enabled by the host. Before starting, agree on the desired difficulty and survival rules so that one player’s expectations do not conflict with the session settings. A host changing settings can affect resource density, survival effects, animal respawn behavior and enemy behavior.
Coordination creates its own problems
A group can waste time if nobody claims a task, if players scatter without a meeting point or if everyone spends resources on separate projects. Friendly fire, accidental aggro and conflicting building plans can turn a numerical advantage into confusion. Voice communication and a simple base plan matter more as the party grows.

Progress depends on the group
Multiplayer is easier only while the group is functioning. If the host is unavailable, connections are unreliable or players have incompatible schedules, a solo save is more dependable. A large party can also make it harder for one person to follow the story at a personal pace.
Why singleplayer is harder and usually scarier
Every survival responsibility is yours
Solo play concentrates gathering, crafting, combat, navigation and decision-making in one character. You must decide whether to finish a shelter before dark, risk a resource run, carry supplies into a cave or retreat when stamina and health are low. There is no teammate to continue the task while you handle an ambush.
Isolation changes the atmosphere
The game’s dark, cramped environments, enemies and environmental hazards have greater psychological impact when nobody else is present. Quiet stretches give you time to anticipate a threat, and a cave decision cannot be diluted by conversation. This is why solo is often the better choice for players seeking horror rather than efficiency.
Progress is more self-paced
A solo player can stop to examine a clue, redesign a shelter or wait for daylight without negotiating with anyone. That control is a strength for careful explorers, but it also means that every delay and detour costs your own time and supplies.

The Forest provides Peaceful, Normal, Hard, Hard Survival and Creative modes. Modes can change difficulty, resource density, survival effects, animal respawn rates and enemy behavior.
Best Value
| Mode | Best use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Peaceful | Learning construction and crafting without enemy pressure. | Useful for practicing systems, but it does not teach the full combat and horror experience. |
| Normal | First full playthrough for most players. | The recommended standard mode and the most balanced starting point for solo or co-op. |
| Hard | Players who already understand survival and combat. | More demanding than Normal; mistakes consume more time and resources. |
| Hard Survival | Experienced players seeking the strictest survival challenge listed here. | Requires stronger preparation and more conservative decisions. |
| Creative | Free building and experimentation. | Best for designing structures or testing ideas rather than learning ordinary survival pressure. |
For an inexperienced group, start on Normal. Use Peaceful only when the immediate goal is learning construction and crafting without enemies. Hard and Hard Survival are better saved for players who already understand the basic loop.
Should you play solo before multiplayer?
Start with multiplayer when learning speed matters
Choose co-op first if you want someone to explain systems, prefer shared building or dislike losing progress after a single combat mistake. A small group on Normal gives beginners room to divide jobs while still experiencing the game’s survival mechanics.
Start with singleplayer when horror and discovery matter most
Choose solo first if you want to absorb the story without interruptions, explore at your own pace or test your ability to survive independently. It is the more demanding introduction, but it teaches every system directly and delivers the strongest sense of isolation.
Use a two-stage approach
- Learn the basics in co-op or Peaceful. Practice shelter placement, fire, storage, crafting and movement.
- Begin a Normal save. Keep the difficulty at the recommended standard while learning combat and cave preparation.
- Try a solo run after the systems feel familiar. You will understand the workload and can judge whether the isolation is enjoyable rather than confusing.
Practical ways to make each mode manageable
Solo checklist
- Build a reliable shelter and basic defenses before making ambitious cave trips.
- Keep food, water, healing items and spare tools available before leaving the base.
- Plan a retreat route rather than relying on winning every fight.
- Use daylight for unfamiliar exploration and avoid carrying a large material load into unnecessary danger.
- Set a personal stopping point for each expedition so fatigue does not force a risky decision.
Multiplayer checklist
- Agree on the host, difficulty and survival settings before creating the session.
- Choose a meeting point and a rule for regrouping when someone becomes separated.
- Assign a builder, gatherer and scout for the first base instead of having everyone collect the same material.
- Keep at least one player watching the perimeter during large construction projects.
- Decide who leads cave trips and who carries emergency supplies.
- Do not assume a larger party can ignore preparation; multiplayer balancing still applies.
Which mode fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Learn crafting and construction quickly | Multiplayer or Peaceful | Shared labor accelerates practice; Peaceful removes enemy interruptions. |
| Reduce the workload of gathering and base defense | Multiplayer | Jobs and watch duty can be divided. |
| Recover from combat mistakes | Multiplayer | Teammates can distract enemies or assist a downed player. |
| Experience maximum isolation and tension | Singleplayer | No conversation or teammate is present to soften the atmosphere. |
| Follow the story at your own pace | Singleplayer | You control every stop, detour and discovery. |
| Play without scheduling concerns | Singleplayer | Your save does not depend on friends or a host being available. |
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
The game overview identifies both singleplayer and co-op and describes cooperative sessions of up to eight players. Endnight has explained that the project began as a single-player experience before fan requests led to multiplayer, and the developers characterize the multiplayer design as friendly co-op rather than a player-versus-player focus.
The same developer material notes that players enjoy sharing gameplay experiences and watching playthroughs, which helps explain why co-op emphasizes social survival and shared building. The official mode reference confirms that difficulty and survival rules can change and that some multiplayer options are controlled by the host. The Steam description’s emphasis on dark, cramped environments, enemies and hazards supports the distinction between solo isolation and shared play.
None of those sources establishes a universal completion-rate, death-rate or enemy-count advantage for one mode. Your result will depend on difficulty, host settings, group coordination, experience and whether your goal is efficient survival or deliberate horror.
Verdict
For the typical first-time player, multiplayer on Normal is the easier way to learn The Forest. Cooperation reduces the amount each person must manage and gives the group more ways to recover when a plan fails. It does not remove enemy pressure, and a disorganized party can still struggle.
