The safest first day in The Forest is deliberately modest: move only far enough from the crash area to collect sticks, rocks, cloth and food; place a small shelter from the Survival Guide; make a fire; then save and sleep before nightfall. That short loop gives you a recovery point and time to learn the game’s systems without turning the opening into a desperate trek.

The Forest is Endnight Games’ 2018 open-world survival-horror game, not its sequel Sons of the Forest. You gather materials, craft tools and weapons, build a base, explore caves and defend yourself from cannibalistic mutants. This guide focuses on a first playthrough in 2026, with spoiler-light priorities rather than a story walkthrough.

Your first-day checklist
Follow this order on a new save. It is more reliable than wandering until dark and trying to improvise a camp under pressure.
- Leave the crash area only as far as necessary. Search nearby ground for sticks, rocks, cloth and food. Do not commit to a long expedition yet.
- Open the Survival Guide only when your surroundings are safe. The guide is useful for choosing a shelter, fire and other structures, but it does not pause the game. Stand where you can see approaching threats before opening it.
- Place a small shelter. Treat this as your first save and recovery anchor, not as your permanent headquarters.
- Make a fire and establish food. Fire, food and construction are core parts of the survival loop, and having them together reduces the risk of spending the night hungry, cold or exposed.
- Save and sleep before nightfall. A saved shelter means a failed experiment does not erase the work you did during the day.
- Use the next daylight period to expand. Gather more material, improve the camp and scout nearby terrain before choosing whether to fight, hide or enter a cave.
If you remember only one rule, make it this: preparation comes before exploration. The game gives you a large world immediately, but it does not require you to cross it on the first day.

What The Forest is and what matters in 2026
Endnight describes The Forest as “an open world survival horror game.” The Steam listing frames the experience as “Build, explore, survive in this terrifying first person survival horror simulator.” Its release date is April 30, 2018. The age of the game does not change the opening priorities: gather, craft, build, save, then explore.
The main systems are connected rather than separate minigames:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Gathering: nearby natural materials become the inputs for tools, weapons, fire and structures.
- Crafting: the items you collect are turned into equipment that lets you travel, hunt, defend yourself and build more efficiently.
- Construction: a shelter starts as a place to save and sleep, while a larger camp can grow into walls, traps and other defenses.
- Exploration: the surface and a large underground network of caves and lakes provide the space for discovery and resource gathering.
- Defense: cannibalistic mutants make location, timing and preparation important. Daylight is generally the better time to build and scout; the official listing specifically presents the rhythm as exploring and building during the day, then defending your base at night.
There is no verified 2026 gameplay statistic or patch figure that changes these fundamentals. Approach current play as the 2018 game described by Endnight and Steam, rather than assuming an unverified balance overhaul.
Choose a forgiving start
Why Normal mode is the sensible default
A Steam beginner guide recommends Normal mode for learning the basic survival and cannibal mechanics. That makes it the practical first choice: you have enough pressure to learn how food, warmth, stamina, crafting and encounters interact, without making every early mistake feel irreversible.
The purpose of a first Normal playthrough is not to rush the story. Spend the opening sessions learning a repeatable routine: return to camp with materials, keep your equipment usable, save, and make the next trip slightly longer only when the previous one felt controlled.
What to expect from higher difficulty
Higher difficulty is an option for a later run or for players who already understand the systems. The available evidence does not establish exact numerical modifiers for every difficulty setting, so do not rely on an assumed percentage for enemy strength, resource availability or survival needs. The useful distinction is practical: a harder setting gives you less margin for an unprepared night, a missed save or an avoidable fight.

Solo, online co-op and LAN co-op
Steam lists three play formats: single-player, online co-op and LAN co-op. Solo play makes every task your responsibility, but it also lets you set the pace and learn without coordinating decisions. Co-op divides gathering, building, scouting and defense among players, while still requiring the group to agree on where to place a shelter and when to enter dangerous areas.

How to handle the opening minutes
1. Search the area around the crash
Start with a tight search pattern. Collect the basic materials you can see without disappearing over a ridge or into the forest: sticks, rocks, cloth and food. The point is not to empty the entire area. It is to acquire enough to make your first shelter, fire and basic equipment while you still know how to get back to the crash site.
Keep your route simple. If you cannot describe the direction back to your starting point, you have already travelled too far for an opening resource run. Mark the position mentally using obvious terrain and return before darkness removes your confidence.

2. Read the Survival Guide safely
The Survival Guide is your construction reference. Use it to select a small shelter and a fire, then place their outlines where you can work without blocking your own movement. Because the guide does not pause the game, do not browse it while exposed in an unfamiliar area. Step into a defensible position, check the surroundings, and only then choose a blueprint.
Build the shelter first if you have to choose. A fire improves your ability to establish food and warmth, but the shelter gives you the save and sleep function that protects all subsequent progress.
3. Put the shelter where you can return to it
Your first shelter is a waypoint as much as a bed. Place it near the materials you are collecting, with enough open space to approach and leave without getting trapped against terrain. You do not need the perfect long-term base location on day one; you need a location you can find again in poor visibility and reach quickly when hurt or tired.
4. Add fire and food
Once the shelter is placed, make a fire nearby and establish a basic food routine. Keep the fire and shelter close enough that a short trip connects the two. This creates the smallest useful camp: a place to recover, a way to manage food and warmth, and a known starting point for the next daylight run.

5. Save and sleep before the first night
Save at the shelter, then sleep there before you commit to exploration. The beginner guidance identifies shelters as the structures that support saving and sleeping. This is the single most important risk-control step in the opening. If a later trip ends badly, you can return to a known state instead of rebuilding your first camp from memory.
Build a camp that can grow
Temporary shelter versus permanent base
Think in stages. A temporary shelter solves the immediate problem of saving and sleeping. A permanent base is a longer project that needs a useful location, repeated material runs and defenses. Trying to make the first shelter perfect delays the systems you actually need to learn.
Use the temporary camp to answer practical questions: Can you reach it from several directions? Is there room to place a fire and move around it? Can you return before night? Once those answers are clear, you can add structures rather than abandoning the camp every time you discover a better view.
Expand in a deliberate order
- Recovery point: shelter, fire and food in one recognizable location.
- Working space: enough room to move, craft and leave without colliding with structures.
- Defensive perimeter: walls, traps and other defenses as your material supply and confidence increase.
- Multiple anchors: additional shelters or outposts that let you save before longer trips and cave descents.
The game supports building during the day and defending your base at night. Use that rhythm instead of trying to construct a large compound after dark, when navigation and reaction time are worse.
Manage the survival loop, not just your inventory
New players often treat every trip as a one-way expedition. A better loop is short and repeatable:
- Leave a saved shelter during daylight.
- Collect only what you can carry and use.
- Return while you still have time to organize the camp.
- Turn materials into tools, weapons, food or structures.
- Save again before starting a riskier objective.
This loop matters because survival needs interact. Food affects your ability to keep moving; warmth and stamina influence how safely you can travel and respond; equipment determines whether an encounter is avoidable or survivable. The objective is not to maximize one meter while ignoring the others. It is to prevent a small shortage from becoming a forced night expedition.
Use daylight as your planning currency
Daylight is when you should gather, build and scout. Reserve the approach to night for returning to camp, checking your defenses and deciding whether to sleep. If you are still far from shelter when visibility drops, stop adding optional objectives. A safe return is more valuable than one extra resource pile.

Keep a fallback weapon and supplies
Before leaving the area around your first shelter, carry enough light, food and a fallback weapon for the trip you intend to make. The exact quantity depends on distance and difficulty, so a fixed number would create false precision. The principle is simple: never make a cave or distant landmark your only plan for returning.

Cannibalistic mutants are part of the core survival problem, but the game does not require every sighting to become a battle. Choose among three responses:
| Response | Use it when | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Move away | You are gathering near camp and the encounter is optional | Health, stamina and your daylight schedule |
| Stay concealed or take a cautious route | You need to reach a destination without committing to an engagement | Your position and the ability to return safely |
| Fight | You are blocking a necessary route or defending a prepared camp | Enough stamina, a usable weapon and an escape path |
Direct combat is not the only measure of progress. A successful first day can end with no major fight at all if you return with materials, save and improve your camp.
Caves: a second-stage objective
Endnight describes a vast underground network of caves and underground lakes. Caves are therefore central exploration spaces, but they are not a sensible first-night assignment. Enter only after you have a saved shelter and enough light, food and a fallback weapon for the route you are attempting.
Use a nearby shelter as your launch point
Save at a shelter close enough to the cave entrance that a failed descent does not erase a whole day’s work. This turns the cave into a controlled experiment: you can test the route, return to surface, restock and try again instead of treating the first descent as an all-or-nothing expedition.
Prepare for a delayed return
Carry supplies for the time underground, not merely the time it takes to reach the entrance. Keep a way to illuminate your path and retain a weapon you can use if the route is not empty. If you cannot identify a safe return route, leave and come back after improving the camp rather than pushing deeper because you have already started.
Do not confuse curiosity with readiness
The presence of a cave entrance is an invitation to plan, not an instruction to descend immediately. Surface preparation teaches the same systems—gathering, crafting, food, warmth, stamina and defense—with more room to recover. Once those routines feel automatic, cave exploration becomes a progression choice instead of a first-night gamble.

Common beginner mistakes and practical fixes
Opening the Survival Guide in an unsafe place
Symptom: You are reading construction options when a threat reaches you. Fix: move to a visible, defensible spot first. The guide does not pause the game.
Building far from a reliable route
Symptom: You have a shelter but cannot find it after a short scouting trip. Fix: place the first camp near recognizable terrain and keep early journeys short. Add distance only after you can return consistently.
Recommended Free Tools
Skipping the first save
Symptom: A failed encounter forces you to repeat the entire opening. Fix: make shelter placement and saving part of the first-day checklist, before caves or long exploration.
Trying to build a final base immediately
Symptom: You spend all daylight arranging a large project and finish without food, equipment or a safe night plan. Fix: use a temporary shelter, fire and food first; expand into walls, traps and other defenses after the basic loop works.
Entering a cave with no fallback
Symptom: You run out of light, food or a usable weapon underground. Fix: save nearby, carry all three categories of preparation and treat the first descent as reconnaissance rather than a commitment to finish every route.
Assuming co-op removes the need for planning
Symptom: The group scatters, loses the shelter and reaches night without a shared base. Fix: agree on one camp, one return route and one person responsible for checking that the group is ready before a cave trip.

Before leaving camp, ask these questions in order:
- Is the objective necessary now? If it is optional, daylight gathering or camp improvement may be the better use of time.
- Can I return to a saved shelter? If not, place or reach a shelter before continuing.
- Do I have light, food and a fallback weapon? If any answer is no, prepare first.
- What is my exit if an encounter starts? Identify an open route rather than relying on winning a fight.
- What will change when I get back? A trip should produce a tool, resource stock, structure, information or safer route—not just distance travelled.
This framework works for solo play and co-op. In a group, answer the questions together so one player’s exploration does not strand everyone else.
What to expect from a first playthrough
Your first sessions should feel like learning a rhythm rather than completing a checklist of story objectives. Start with the crash area, establish a saved shelter, learn how fire and food fit into your routine, then make the camp more defensible. Use the surface to build confidence before making caves a regular destination.
That approach also leaves room for the game’s intended tension. You still have to decide when to explore, when to retreat and whether a sighting deserves a fight. The difference is that each decision begins from a prepared shelter instead of from an unplanned night in the wilderness.
