- The old phone if you want to transfer data (Android-to-Android is usually fast).
- Wi‑Fi available (you’ll likely download system updates and apps during setup).
- Your SIM/eSIM status—know whether your Pixel will use a physical SIM or eSIM activation.
On Pixel, many choices can be changed later, but security and backup decisions are easiest to get right immediately.
Get through the Pixel setup wizard (and choose the right options)
The setup wizard asks about language, network, and account sign-in. Your goal is to pick secure defaults without blocking essential features.
Choose the right network and language
Pick a stable Wi‑Fi network first. Setup downloads can be large, and unstable Wi‑Fi can cause retries that look like “stuck” screens.
Sign in to your Google account early
When you log in, Pixel can restore apps, enable backup, and sync Contacts/Calendar automatically.
- Use the same Google account you use on Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive.
- If you have multiple accounts, decide which one is your default for Photos and Play services.
Turn on screen security features during setup
If your wizard prompts for a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint unlock, choose the strongest option you’re comfortable using. PINs are reliable and fast; fingerprint is convenient.
If you see options like “Unlock with fingerprint,” allow it. You can disable or adjust it later in Settings.
Let Google services run (at least initially)
Some prompts cover “Personalized” experiences, device diagnostics, and backups. You can tighten privacy later, but enabling core services early reduces sync issues.
Update Android immediately
Pixel devices are designed to stay current. The first update after unboxing often fixes bugs and improves battery, camera processing, and connectivity reliability.
Check for updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System update.
- Tap Check for update.
Install all available updates, including any security patch updates. If the update prompts a restart, do it right away.
Verify update status
After reboot, return to System update to confirm the date and version. You’ll usually see the Android version and the security patch level.
Restore your data the right way
The goal is clean app data, correct account logins, and photos that actually show up in Photos without duplicates.

During setup, Pixel commonly offers a “Copy apps & data” flow. Use it if your old phone is Android and supports the feature.
- When asked, choose Copy apps & data.
- Pick the transfer method offered (often via cable or nearby transfer).
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
Keep both phones close. Transfer speed and completion depend on Wi‑Fi quality and the amount of data.

Alternative: start clean, then selectively restore
If you were annoyed by bloat or buggy behavior on your old phone, you can do a factory-clear approach: sign in, update, then re-install key apps manually.
- Use this if your old device had frequent crashes or storage issues.
- Restore only what you need: banking apps, messaging, navigation, and password manager.
Passwords and 2FA: restore carefully
If you use a password manager, make sure it’s set up before you start re-logging into apps. For 2FA, verify the authenticator app is accessible so you don’t lock yourself out.

Lock it down: security settings you should enable
Pixel security is strong, but you have to turn on the best protections. Do this once, and you’ll thank yourself later.
Set a strong screen lock
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Tap Screen lock.
- Choose PIN (or Pattern), then follow prompts.
If you use fingerprint unlock, confirm it’s registered and works reliably.
Enable “Find My Device”
This helps you locate, ring, or remotely lock your phone if it’s lost.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Tap Find My Device.
- Ensure it’s turned On.
Turn on app protections and Play Protect
Pixel includes Play Protect scanning to reduce the risk from malicious apps.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Tap Play Protect.
- Tap Settings and confirm scanning is enabled.
Secure unlock for sensitive apps (optional)
Some Pixel builds include additional controls for privacy. If you see options like app lock, use them for banking and payment apps.
Privacy controls that matter on Pixel
Most privacy issues come from notification previews, background app access, or location permission sprawl—not from a single scary setting.
Review location permissions
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy (or Security & privacy).
- Tap Location.
- Tap app permissions and set to While in use where possible.
If an app doesn’t need background location, don’t grant it.
Turn off notification previews for sensitive content
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Find Lock screen / Notification on lock screen.
- Choose Hide sensitive content (or the closest equivalent).
Limit microphone and camera access
Check which apps have recently used the microphone or camera and restrict background permissions. This is especially important for social and shopping apps.
Review ad personalization and data sharing
If you care about ad targeting, open Google settings and adjust personalization controls. You can reduce data sharing without breaking apps.
Set up backup, Photos, and storage
Backups aren’t just “nice to have.” They’re what prevents a disaster when a phone is lost, damaged, or replaced.
Enable Google One backup (and verify it’s working)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Tap Backup.
- Turn on Back up to Google One.
Confirm what’s being backed up: app data, call history (if available), device settings, and more.

Set up Google Photos correctly
To avoid confusion, decide whether you want automatic backup for pictures and videos right now.
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap Photos settings.
- Tap Backup.
Choose backup quality based on your storage needs. If you’re close to your Google storage limit, check current usage before you enable unlimited-style options.
Manage storage before you hit a wall
Go to Settings > Storage and look for large downloads, cached media, or old screenshots.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Large apps | Space fills up fast after a restore |
| Downloads and cached files | Quick wins for free storage |
| Photos/Video usage | Backup can stall if storage runs out |
Battery and charging settings to configure
Pixel batteries are smart, but your habits and settings still matter. Adjust these once and forget them.
Enable adaptive charging and battery features
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery (or Battery & device care depending on version).
- Enable options like Adaptive charging / Battery protection if available.
If your Pixel offers it, battery protection helps reduce long-term battery wear by limiting charge at certain levels when plugged in for long periods.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check which apps drain power
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Check Battery usage.
Update bad-behaving apps and reduce background activity for anything that spikes power usage.
Set charging behavior that matches your routine
- If you charge overnight, prefer adaptive/battery protection features.
- If you charge briefly, fast charging is usually fine—watch heat and avoid charging under a pillow or blanket.
Essential notifications and app behavior
Most “Pixel is weird” complaints are really notification problems: noisy apps, missed messages, or duplicate alert types.
Set notification priority for the apps you care about
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications.
- Select an app and set notification categories (messages, calls, alerts) to your preference.
For messaging apps, make sure “high priority” or equivalent categories are enabled so you don’t miss urgent conversations.
Disable notifications you don’t need
- News apps often default to too many channels.
- Shopping apps push marketing alerts. Turn those off unless you actually want them.
- Social apps may separate “mentions” from “likes” and “story replies.” Keep the categories that matter.
Use Do Not Disturb (and schedule it)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Do Not Disturb.
- Enable Schedule and set time windows.
Allow important contacts if the feature offers “allow repeat callers” or “allow starred contacts.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnectivity: Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, mobile data, and eSIM
Connectivity issues are the most common “why is my Pixel acting up” problem after setup. Fix the basics early.
Wi‑Fi: confirm network and security
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & Internet.
- Tap Wi‑Fi and connect to your main network.
- Verify the network shows as “Connected” and confirm the correct security type if you see it (WPA2/WPA3).
If you have multiple access points, pick the one you actually use most so Pixel doesn’t jump networks constantly.
Bluetooth: pair carefully, then test audio
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth & device connection (or Bluetooth).
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Pair your headphones, car, or speaker.
After pairing, play a short audio clip and confirm mic and output direction. Re-pairing fixes many “sound only in one ear” issues.
Mobile data and eSIM
If your Pixel supports eSIM, activation can take a few minutes to propagate fully across carrier systems.

If you have no data but calls work, toggle Airplane mode on/off once, then re-check the APN settings (carrier-specific).
Camera, Photos, and Google Assistant defaults
Your Pixel’s camera experience depends on a few settings, especially if you shoot in different lighting conditions.
Set camera shortcuts and accessibility preferences
- Open the Camera app.
- Check for settings like grid lines, face framing, or video quality options.
If you need accessibility controls for taking photos (like voice commands or magnification), configure them in Settings > Accessibility before you start relying on them.
Choose your Photos backup and sharing approach
Decide whether you want automatic backup on cellular, and how Photos handles shared albums. This reduces “why didn’t my new photos upload?” moments.
Make Assistant useful on day one
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Go to Settings > Assistant (or Google Assistant depending on your version).
Confirm voice match/permissions and review languages so Assistant responds reliably.
Pixel features worth turning on (and where to find them)
Pixel hardware and software features can look “magical,” but only if you enable them correctly. These are the ones most people actually use.
Spam protection and call screening
If your Pixel supports it in your region, enable call screening and spam identification so you spend less time deciding whether an unknown number is legit.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the menu (or profile) and go to Settings.
- Enable Caller ID & spam and any call screening options.
Now Playing / media recognition (if available)
Some Pixel models let you identify music playing nearby. It’s a quick win if you like discovering songs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Tap Sound (or Security & privacy depending on version).
- Search for Now Playing and enable it.
Live Caption and accessibility media tools
If you prefer captions without extra apps, enable Live Caption in Accessibility or Sound settings (menu name varies by Android version).
At a Glance: configure widgets you’ll see daily
Set the At a Glance cards you care about (calendar, weather, reminders). Pixel’s lock screen and home screen can be tuned to reduce friction.
- Press and hold the home screen.
- Tap Widgets or open Settings for Home screen.
- Adjust what appears in At a Glance.
Common setup mistakes (and how to fix them fast)
Most problems come from skipping verification steps. Here are the common ones—and the quick fixes.
Forgetting to verify backup
If you restored data but didn’t enable backup, replacing your phone later becomes harder than it should be.

Fix: go to Settings > Google > Backup and confirm it’s enabled, then check Google Photos backup status.

Allowing too much background permission
Apps that can run in the background can drain battery and make notifications noisy.
Fix: revoke background permissions for apps that don’t need them; then re-check battery usage.
Ignoring storage pressure
After a transfer, storage can quietly fill. Updates and Photos uploads may fail or stall.
Fix: open Settings > Storage, free space, and confirm Photos backup isn’t blocked.
Leaving notification channels at defaults
Restore flows often bring notification categories back from the old phone. That can be noisy if your past settings were messy.
Fix: go app-by-app in Settings > Notifications and disable channels you don’t want.
Troubleshooting: what to do when setup doesn’t go smoothly
If something breaks during setup, don’t panic. Pixel settings are recoverable, and most issues are configuration or sync delays.
Setup transfer stuck or incomplete
- Check power and Wi‑Fi: keep both phones plugged in and on a stable network.
- Restart both devices and try the transfer again.
- Clear the transfer retry by re-starting the “Copy apps & data” flow from the same stage, if your wizard allows it.
Google account sync errors
- Go to Settings > Accounts and ensure the correct Google account is added and signed in.
- Open Settings > Apps and search for Google and Google Play services. Update them from Play Store.
- Toggle Wi‑Fi off/on once and confirm time/date are set automatically in Settings > System > Date & time.
No mobile data (carrier line shows but internet doesn’t work)
- Toggle Airplane mode on/off.
- Restart the phone.
- Re-check Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs and confirm the correct SIM/eSIM is set for mobile data.
- Verify APN settings if the carrier requires manual configuration.
Bluetooth connects but audio is choppy or one-sided
- Forget the device and re-pair it.
- Check that your audio output is selected correctly when playing media.
- Update the headphone firmware if the manufacturer app supports it.
Photos backup keeps failing
- Check Google storage usage in your Google account and free space if needed.
- Confirm Photos backup is enabled and that you allow backup on the network you’re using.
- Wait for the connection to stabilize, then retry.
FAQs
Should I set up a screen lock before transferring data?
Yes. If the setup wizard gives you the choice, set your PIN or fingerprint first. It doesn’t meaningfully slow data transfer, and it reduces the time your phone is unlocked.
Do I need to update Android before installing all apps?
It’s best to update first. System updates can improve compatibility and fix bugs that affect app syncing, camera processing, and battery behavior.
What if I accidentally restored everything and I don’t like it?
You can reset and start over, but try cleaning first. Disable notifications, remove problematic apps, and verify backup/settings. A full reset is worth it only when the device performance is clearly degraded.
How do I make sure my passwords survived the move?
If you use a password manager, set it up early and confirm it’s signed in. Then check banking and email apps for 2FA prompts. For authenticator apps, verify you can generate codes before you remove the old phone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I change these settings later?
Most of them are editable anytime in Settings. Security (screen lock, Find My Device) and backup (Google One, Photos) are the most important to verify immediately.
Bottom Line
The best way to start with a new Google Pixel is to secure the basics (account sign-in, screen lock, Find My Device), update Android right away, then verify backups and permissions. After that, tune notifications and connectivity so the phone behaves the way you expect.
If you do those steps in order, you’ll avoid 80% of the “why is my Pixel acting weird?” problems and get dependable camera, battery, and sync from day one.
