In a 2025 YouGov survey, 66% of Gen Z respondents said they used a bank’s mobile app for transactions. That figure shows how central mobile banking is in the survey, but it does not identify the most-used individual apps. There is no comparable current ranking across providers in the available evidence.
What the survey evidence says about Gen Z and money apps
YouGov’s 2025 report says 78% of its Gen Z respondents had one bank account, and 66% used a bank’s mobile app for transactions. Other reported ways of interacting with financial services included internet banking (46%), ATMs (42%), in-person branch visits (35%), phone interactions (14%), third-party apps (9%) and live chat (5%). These survey categories may overlap; they are not market-share figures or a ranking of apps. YouGov’s findings do not state full field dates or sample size in the displayed passage.

Managing money also involves making room for goals. YouGov reported that 32% of respondents were saving for an emergency fund, 25% for a major purchase such as a car or appliance, 21% for debt repayment and 20% for a vacation. It also reported 19% saving to buy a home and 13% for retirement. On budgeting, 24% said they had no budget, while 12% often overspent despite budgeting. These are reported survey responses, not verified financial records.

A separate Cash App-commissioned Harris Poll surveyed 2,080 U.S. adults online from September 25–29, 2025; the release identifies 319 respondents ages 18–28 as Gen Z. Among those respondents, 77% said earning interest would motivate them to save more. Of respondents who had a savings account, 46% reported having less than $500 saved, and 44% knew their account’s interest rate. The same survey found 68% interested in stock-market investing and 55% interested in cryptocurrency investing. These are attitudes and self-reported savings, not verified balances or proof of investing activity. The poll’s overall stated sampling precision was ±2.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level; the release says subgroup estimates have wider intervals. Cash App’s release describes the survey and its findings.

Acorns’ 2025 Money Matters Report says 39% of Gen Z respondents named lack of savings as a financial concern. Opinium Research conducted the broader Acorns-commissioned survey from September 5–26, 2025, among 5,000 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. The page also describes a separate survey of 2,494 Acorns customers; those samples should not be conflated. Acorns’ report is vendor-commissioned research, not an independent comparison of apps.
Which kinds of fintech apps do what?
The same person may use a bank’s app for deposits, a payment app to settle a shared bill, and another tool to track a goal. The categories below describe functions and examples supported by the sources; examples are not recommendations or evidence of which apps lead Gen Z adoption.
| App category | Examples in the sources | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile banking | A bank’s mobile app; Cash App describes banking services provided through partner banks. | Eligibility, account terms, fees, deposit protections, customer support, cash access, and whether the provider is a bank or a financial-services platform. |
| Person-to-person (P2P) payments | PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Zelle, named as examples by the Federal Reserve. | Whether the people you pay use it, transfer limits and timing, funding source, dispute options, privacy settings, and safeguards against paying the wrong person. |
| Budgeting and saving | Budgeting tools as a category; Cash App savings goals; Acorns’ described tools. | Manual versus automated tracking, goal setup, account connections, fees, access to funds, and data permissions. |
| Investing | Acorns describes round-up and retirement investing and accounts for children; Cash App describes stock and bitcoin investing. | Account type, fees, investment choices, risk, automation, eligibility, and whether investing fits your time horizon. |
| Buy now, pay later (BNPL) | Afterpay. | Payment dates, late-payment consequences, total cost, returns and refunds, and whether installments fit a realistic budget. |
Mobile banking: start with the account, not the app’s branding
A bank app is typically where you check balances and transactions and manage the account behind them. The YouGov figures show that mobile banking is common among its surveyed Gen Z respondents, but they do not identify a leading bank or establish that one account is sufficient for every person.

When comparing an account, look beyond the interface. Confirm whether the provider is a bank or a financial-services platform, who holds deposits, what protections apply, how fees work, how to reach support, and how you can access cash. Cash App’s October 2025 announcement described teen accounts for ages 13–17 with parental controls, P2P transfers, debit-card spending, savings goals, allowances, and stock and bitcoin investing. It said banking services were provided by partner banks and that Sutton Bank issued the card; it also stated that Cash App itself is a financial-services platform, not a bank. These details are specific to that announcement and are not a substitute for checking current account terms.
P2P payment apps: convenient transfers still need care
The Federal Reserve defines P2P services as tools that electronically transfer money between consumers, often through a mobile app. Its 2025 household banking report names PayPal, Venmo, Cash App and Zelle as examples. That establishes them as category examples, not as a Gen Z usage ranking. The Federal Reserve’s report provides the definition and survey context.
Before choosing a payment app, check whether the people you need to pay can receive money there, how long transfers take, which funding sources are supported, and what happens if a payment is mistaken or disputed. Review privacy settings and verify the recipient before sending; the ease of a quick transfer does not by itself establish that a payment can be reversed.

Budgeting and saving: choose a tool that supports a specific goal
The YouGov findings point to a practical reason to consider a budgeting method: 24% of its Gen Z respondents said they had no budget, while emergency savings was the most frequently reported savings goal at 32%. A useful tool should help you see what comes in, what goes out, and what remains for a goal. The key choice is whether you prefer manual tracking or an app that connects to accounts and categorizes transactions.

Deloitte reports that nearly 70% of its surveyed Gen Z and millennial respondents had authorized banks to share data with other providers. That figure combines two generations, so it should not be read as a Gen Z-only result. Before linking accounts, review the permissions, privacy terms, connected providers and process for revoking access. Deloitte’s analysis describes the broader pattern of younger consumers using specialized apps for tasks such as budgeting, taxes and investing.
If you would rather track spending on paper, a budget planner notebook can be a simple alternative: list income, recurring costs and planned spending, then update actual expenses. Survey evidence that some respondents lack a budget does not show that Gen Z prefers paper over apps, so treat a notebook as an optional method rather than a trend.

Investing apps: understand the account and risk before automating
Acorns describes several product categories: Round-Ups for investing spare change, Acorns Later for retirement investing, Acorns Early investment accounts for children, a checking account and debit card, shopping rewards, and financial education. These are the company’s descriptions of its offerings, not independent assessments of fees, suitability, performance or Gen Z market share. Its report’s finding that 39% of Gen Z respondents named lack of savings as a concern is context, not a reason to invest money needed soon.
Before investing, identify the account type, fees, available investments, eligibility rules and risks. Consider when you may need the money: investments can fluctuate, so an investing feature is not interchangeable with cash set aside for an emergency. Cash App’s survey found interest in stocks and cryptocurrency, but interest is not proof of use or evidence that either is right for a particular person. Check current product terms and risk disclosures before opening or funding an account. Acorns’ report and product descriptions explain the categories it offers.
BNPL: treat installments as debt with dates attached
Cash App Afterpay’s April 1, 2025 release, describing research by Morning Consult, reported that 52% of surveyed Gen Z respondents believed BNPL could help them manage finances better than traditional credit, while 55% were open to using it in the future. Those figures describe perceptions and openness, not improved financial outcomes. The release does not establish that installment payments improve budgeting or financial health.

Before using a buy-now-pay-later plan, check the full repayment schedule, late-payment consequences, total cost, and how returns or refunds affect installments. Put every due date against your actual budget; several small payments can still compete with rent, bills and savings. Do not treat an installment plan as affordable simply because the first payment is small.
How to choose a combination of apps
- Name the job. Decide whether you need account access, transfers, spending visibility, a savings goal, investing, or installment payments.
- Compare the relevant terms. Use the category-specific checks above: account protections and access for banking, transfer and dispute details for P2P, permissions for connected budgeting, fees and risk for investing, and due dates and consequences for BNPL.
- Limit unnecessary connections. Link accounts only when the benefit is clear, and review how to revoke access.
- Check current terms before signing up. Features, eligibility, fees, yields and partner arrangements can change; verify them with the provider rather than relying on older announcements.
The available evidence is U.S.-centered, and publishers may define Gen Z differently. The Cash App survey, for example, labels respondents ages 18–28 as Gen Z. The sources do not provide a comparable current ranking of fintech apps by Gen Z use, nor a neutral side-by-side assessment of provider fees, protections, app ratings or customer service. Choose by the task and the terms that matter to you, not by an unsupported claim that one app is the Gen Z favorite.
