The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has the ingredients of a compelling space RPG: a crew bound by a crisis, choices that affect relationships, tactical third-person combat and familiar locations across the solar system. Those are announced features, not proof that the finished game will deliver. Owlcat’s current Steam listing gives it a Q2 2027 release window; the quality of its story, combat and role-playing remains to be seen.
What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
Owlcat Games describes The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as a single-player, third-person science-fiction action RPG set in the world of The Expanse. You play a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose shore leave on Eros is shattered by a station-wide lockdown and a wider conspiracy. The setup puts survival, a fractured crew and events with consequences for the solar system at the center of the story. Owlcat’s announcement introduces the premise.

In an Xbox Wire overview dated March 26, 2026, Owlcat community manager Gala Dolgikh adds that the player and their twin work for Pinkwater Security, witness a massacre on Eros and escape aboard an experimental enemy ship. The official Steam listing says players can create a captain who is an Earther, Martian or Belter.

Why its announced design has promise
A crisis that can give the crew a reason to matter
The Eros emergency gives the crew a shared survival problem, while the conspiracy expands the stakes beyond the station. That structure could make the crew’s relationships feel tied to what happens in the story rather than like a separate menu of companion quests. Whether the writing and pacing make those stakes land is not established by the announcement.

Companions with roles beyond combat backup
Owlcat and Xbox Wire describe companions with distinct skills who can join the active squad or provide support from outside it. Dolgikh identifies Zafar as a mechanic, Regina as a networker and marksman, Teo as a medic, Michael as a mercenary, and the player’s twin as a close ally. That mix suggests opportunities to make squad composition and crew expertise matter. The descriptions do not yet show how much those skills change mission outcomes or how deeply each relationship develops.
Choices tied to leadership and relationships
Xbox Wire says missions present consequential choices, while Steam says relationships can improve or deteriorate depending on the player’s decisions and leadership. Dolgikh writes: “Each mission in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn presents you with a choice, one that may entail large long-lasting consequences.” That is a clear role-playing promise; the meaningful test will be whether choices produce distinct, sustained consequences rather than only different dialogue or short-term reactions.
Combat with tactical tools and companion actions
The official descriptions present cover-focused third-person gunplay supported by abilities, gadgets, real-time commands and companion “Exploits,” which let crew members capitalize on openings in combat. Xbox Wire names zero-gravity grenades, tactical scanning and combat drones among the systems described for the beta. These tools could give fights more texture than straightforward shooting, but published feature descriptions do not establish how well they work together or how combat feels in play.

Steam lists Ganymede, Ceres, Mars and Luna among the locations, with ruined habitats and political strongholds as settings. That offers room to contrast distinct environments and factions within a science-fiction world grounded in the solar system. The number of named locations alone does not establish how open or extensive exploration will be.
What remains unproven
The case for potential rests on announced systems, not a verdict on the finished game. Owlcat’s descriptions outline a promising mix of crew dynamics, decisions, exploration and action, but they cannot establish the quality of the writing, pacing, combat balance, mission design or role-playing depth. A strong space RPG needs those elements to reinforce one another in actual play; a list of features cannot show that they do.
Rank #2
The title’s Gamescom 2026 framing also needs care: the available material does not include an authoritative Owlcat or Gamescom event page confirming a showcase or specific footage. It is safer to judge the game by the developer and store descriptions than to treat a Gamescom demo report as verified evidence of what was shown.

Steam currently lists Q2 2027 as the planned release window, without an exact launch date. Xbox Wire’s March 2026 article used the broader wording “Spring 2027” and announced day-one availability with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The current, more specific Steam listing is the clearest release window in the available official information; schedules can change.
Xbox Wire announced a closed beta beginning April 22, 2026 for eligible Founders who bought the Miller’s Pack or Collector’s Edition through the official game site. The beta was described as including a full early-game mission. Since that announced start date has passed, check the official game site for current participation status rather than assuming registration remains open. Available information does not establish whether the Collector’s Edition includes physical items or is sold through Amazon.
Owlcat’s announcement links to wishlists on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. Xbox Wire also covers Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud, and says the game will support Xbox Play Anywhere. For a final platform list, check the relevant official store pages as release approaches.

The developer-provided Steam content description warns of depictions of blood and slavery, as well as textual references to abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assault, self-harm, suicide and miscarriage. Steam says some scenes and text may disturb some players and advises discretion.
