AI coding assistants can help developers complete more tasks, but that does not mean developers—or coding jobs—are already being replaced. The evidence points to a narrower shift: producing code may be less distinctive when a tool can generate it, while understanding, testing, debugging, and judging that code remain essential. Two recent studies illustrate both sides of that tension, but neither measures job losses or long-term career outcomes.
Will AI replace software developers?
The available evidence does not show that AI is replacing software developers. Microsoft Research reports higher task completion in three workplace experiments where developers had access to an AI coding assistant. A separate Anthropic trial found that engineers who used AI while learning an unfamiliar library scored lower on an immediate comprehension quiz than those who worked by hand. These results concern different outcomes in different settings; neither tracked layoffs, hiring, wages, or employment over time.

The title is best understood as a warning about how developers demonstrate value, not as a proven forecast. If code production becomes easier to automate, a developer whose contribution is only typing code may be harder to distinguish from the tool. That is an interpretation of the studies, not a measured finding about replacement. The more durable contribution is being able to decide what should be built, understand what generated code does, and verify that it works for the people and systems that depend on it.

In a June 2025 summary, Microsoft Research reports a 26.08% increase in completed tasks across three randomized workplace experiments involving 4,867 developers at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company. Developers in the treatment groups had access to an AI assistant that suggested code completions. The reported estimate has a standard error of 10.3%, and the individual experiments were noisy. Microsoft also reports higher adoption and larger productivity gains among less experienced developers. Microsoft Research’s account of the experiments describes completed tasks, not code quality, downstream business value, or employment effects.

That makes the result evidence that an assistant can increase measured output in some organizational settings—not a promise that every developer or team will be 26.08% more productive. Task counts do not show whether the work was correct, maintainable, or valuable after delivery. Those questions matter when deciding whether a faster first draft actually improves engineering work.
Does using AI to code make junior developers worse at debugging?
Anthropic’s January 29, 2026 randomized trial studied 52 mostly junior engineers who used Python at least weekly for more than a year but had not worked with the Trio library. Participants implemented two features using Trio, either with AI assistance or by hand, then took an immediate quiz. The AI group averaged 50% on the quiz; the hand-coding group averaged 67%. Anthropic reports Cohen’s d=0.738 and p=0.01 for the score difference. Anthropic’s study description says the sample was relatively small and that the assessment measured comprehension shortly after the task; whether this predicts long-term skill development is unresolved.
Rank #2
The AI group finished about two minutes faster on average, but the completion-time difference was not statistically significant. This was a constrained exercise in learning an unfamiliar library, not a general test of whether AI speeds up software work. The quiz assessed debugging, reading code, and conceptual understanding alongside code writing, making the result relevant to what developers need to understand—not evidence that AI assistance invariably weakens those skills.

These studies do not establish a universal ranking of developer skills. They do, however, make a practical case for treating code comprehension and technical judgment as part of the work rather than as extras. When an assistant produces a plausible implementation, developers still need to determine whether it fits the requirements, identify incorrect assumptions, and recognize consequences the prompt did not spell out.
Rank #3
- Code reading: trace unfamiliar code and explain its behavior before accepting or modifying it.
- Debugging: isolate the cause of a failure instead of relying on a generated patch that may conceal it.
- Conceptual understanding: know the library, system, or design principle well enough to assess whether a suggested approach makes sense.
- Review and verification: check behavior against requirements and look for errors that a task-completion count cannot reveal.
Anthropic’s qualitative analysis found stronger mastery patterns among participants who asked the assistant for explanations or conceptual help, and weaker patterns among those who heavily delegated code generation or debugging. The authors explicitly caution that these observations do not establish that those habits caused the quiz outcomes. They are a useful prompt for how to work with AI, not a proven learning formula.
What do these studies establish—and what do they leave open?
| Question | Microsoft Research workplace experiments | Anthropic learning trial |
|---|---|---|
| Outcome measured | Completed tasks with access to an AI code-completion assistant | Immediate quiz performance and task completion time |
| Setting and scale | Three randomized workplace experiments; 4,867 developers across Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company | One randomized exercise; 52 mostly junior engineers learning an unfamiliar Python library |
| Main reported result | 26.08% increase in completed tasks; standard error 10.3%; individual experiments were noisy | Average quiz scores of 50% with AI and 67% by hand; AI group finished about two minutes faster, a nonsignificant difference |
| What it does not establish | Code quality, downstream delivery value, or whether developer jobs are being displaced | Long-term skill development, general productivity across work, or employment effects |
The studies are not contradictory: one measured output in routine organizational work, while the other measured short-term comprehension after a constrained learning task. Together, they suggest that output and capability are not interchangeable. A developer can complete more tasks with an assistant and still need to build the understanding required to maintain, debug, and evaluate the resulting software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should developers do with AI coding tools?
Use AI to accelerate work without treating generated code as a substitute for understanding. In particular, when working in an unfamiliar area, ask for explanations and reasoning as well as implementations, then inspect the result and check it against the actual requirements. Anthropic’s observations are consistent with this approach, although they do not prove it improves learning.
For teams, completed-task counts are only one signal. Pair them with review of correctness, maintainability, and whether the delivered change solves the intended problem. The Microsoft summary does not establish those outcomes, so organizations should not infer software quality or staffing needs from task volume alone.
Best Value
The practical risk is not that coding has become worthless. It is that code production by itself may become a less complete account of a developer’s contribution. The evidence makes a case for strengthening engineering judgment alongside coding; it does not show that developers who focus on code are already being replaced.
