In the ask-the-record project, a contributor could query public Sanity data but could not reach the organization-scoped Context MCP endpoint used by the agent. With no canonical contract for that endpoint, he built an offline mock—and some of its invented field names ended up describing the real dataset in the agent’s tool instructions.
Public data access did not reproduce the agent’s route
Keniel Zepeda’s September 30, 2026 account describes two different ways to reach data associated with the project. A direct query to the public Sanity dataset reportedly returned 120 documents for count(*) without an API key or account. The agent’s actual Context MCP route, by contrast, returned HTTP 401 without an organization API token. Zepeda says that route required an organization token, not a project token. These are the author’s reported observations, not independently rerun results.

The distinction matters: a contributor who can inspect public records may still be unable to execute the agent’s real path. An MCP endpoint can also define its own sources and a groqFilter, so access to a related public dataset does not establish that it exposes the same records as the endpoint.
How an offline mock turned into apparent documentation
PouyaZX4 cloned ask-the-record and opened an outside pull request to address GROQ schema routing. Unable to reproduce the full MCP setup, he tested query generation against an offline mock schema in LM Studio. The mock used clearer semantic names intended to help small language models understand fields. Some of those names later appeared in the agent’s tool description as though they were the actual dataset’s schema.
#1 Best Overall
“The dataset itself is public of course, but I wasn’t able to replicate the full MCP setup on my end at the time I tested it so I was hitting that 401 on the Context MCP endpoint. So I just tested the query generation logic against an offline mock schema on LM Studio instead, which is where those field names came from.”

The mock was a reasonable way to keep working around an inaccessible dependency. The failure was not that a contributor used a mock; it was that maintainers had not supplied a canonical contract for the path contributors could not run. A useful test substitute became authoritative-looking model instructions without being checked against the actual schema.

Where the mock schema diverged from the reported dataset
Zepeda’s article says the pull request used several plausible but inaccurate names. In particular, names such as verifiedReceipts conveyed more than the underlying records supported: a comment ID indicates an addressable comment, not that anyone verified it.
| Mock or query name | Field or structure reported for the dataset | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|
claim.subject |
No such field, according to Zepeda | A query built on the invented path cannot address the reported schema. |
claim.statement |
text |
The actual field name differs from the semantic label. |
finding.finders |
foundBy |
The mock’s name is not the dataset’s reported field. |
finding.verifiedReceipts |
commentId or commentIds, depending on the record |
A comment reference does not establish verification. |
patch.findingRef |
findings[] |
The reported patch structure is an array, not that singular field. |
patch.commitHash |
sha |
The mock name does not match the reported dataset field. |
Pouya described the intention behind the mock names this way:
“When creating that schema, I used clean, self-describing semantic names (commitHash instead of sha, verifiedReceipts instead of commentIds, finders instead of foundBy) because explicit naming makes it way easier for the SLMs to understand what fields represent and prevents confusion.”

Semantic labels can make a mock easier to understand, but they are not interchangeable with schema facts. In particular, a descriptive name may quietly add a claim—such as verification—that the underlying field cannot substantiate.
Query failures showed why contract accuracy matters
Zepeda also reports two query problems in the pull request examples: one GROQ example had a stray dot after [0] and returned HTTP 400; another patch query returned null because it used an absent field and a lower-case identifier. His corrected form used "finding-B1" in findings[]._ref and returned sha and inMain. These examples are reported by the article and were not independently executed for this account.

That is the practical cost of mixing a useful test mock with unverified production assumptions: query-generation logic can appear to work locally while queries against the real contract fail, return no result, or attach misleading meaning to a field.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What maintainers should provide when a dependency is privileged
Documenting that a route is inaccessible does not give contributors a reliable way to test it. Making a route reachable may also be inappropriate when it depends on an organization credential. Zepeda’s proposed middle ground is to maintain a contract fixture derived from the actual schema:
Production schema → generated contract fixture → contributor harness
Best Value
The fixture should be checked into the repository and generated from the real schema, so contributors can exercise query-building and other local logic without receiving the maintainer’s organization credential. It should capture the interface the agent expects, not a friendlier substitute that changes field names or semantics. The same pattern can apply to private APIs, payment sandboxes, internal queues, and OAuth services: when contributors cannot run the privileged dependency, maintainers need to own the stand-in contract.
A better test of whether a project is reproducible
Ask: “Can someone who clones your repo actually execute the path your system takes, or only the path your README documents?” If the live path cannot be made available to contributors, the repository still needs a trustworthy way to test against its contract. A mock can fill that role—but only when its schema is sourced from the real interface and its differences are explicit, rather than silently promoted into documentation.
