The Cybersecurity Skills Shift: Can It Really Double Your Salary?

AI and cloud security are reshaping cybersecurity skill needs, but current evidence does not show that one specialty or certification doubles salary.

No verified evidence shows that one cybersecurity shift can double a person’s salary. What current evidence does show is rising demand for skills in AI and cloud security, alongside a strong U.S. job outlook for information security analysts. Those trends may create opportunities, but the salary result depends on your starting pay, experience, location, role, and employer—not a single skill or credential.

What the salary and job-growth figures actually say

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a $129,180 median annual wage for information security analysts in May 2025. A median is the midpoint across workers in that occupation: half earned more and half earned less. It is not a starting salary, a forecast for an individual, or a typical raise after changing specialties. The figure is specific to the United States. BLS: Information Security Analysts.

BLS projects employment in the occupation to grow 21% from 2025 to 2035. That is a projection of employment, not a guarantee that a particular applicant will find a job or receive higher pay. It also does not establish that AI or cloud security alone will drive a worker’s compensation. BLS: Information Security Analysts.

What is changing in cybersecurity work

AI is a growing skills need, not a shortcut to a raise

In ISC2’s 2025 workforce study, 41% of respondents whose security teams reported at least one skills need identified AI as a need. A 2026 ISC2 release based on a May survey of 856 cybersecurity professionals who use AI described increased time spent reviewing and validating AI recommendations, with human accountability continuing to matter. ISC2 CEO Scott Beale, CC, said: “AI is not replacing cybersecurity professionals; it is changing what the profession requires of them.” That is an executive’s assessment, not a universal forecast about jobs or pay. For workers, the practical implication is that using AI-generated recommendations is not enough by itself. Security work still involves judging whether an output fits the organization’s systems and risks, validating it, and communicating decisions. The available survey evidence identifies AI as a skills need; it does not measure an AI-related salary premium.

Cloud security includes architecture and secure design

ISC2’s 2025 workforce study found that 36% of respondents whose teams had at least one skills need identified cloud security. In a cloud-skills comparison reported in ISC2’s 2026 analysis, cloud architecture and secure design ranked highest among the listed priorities for both hiring managers (41%) and cybersecurity professionals (50%). Those figures describe the respective survey groups’ priorities, not the share of all employers hiring or a pay increase attached to the skill. Cloud-security work can also involve identity and access management, cloud data protection, secure deployment and configuration, and cloud operations. Which area is useful to learn first depends on the role and the employer’s environment; the survey does not name one universally best specialization. ISC2 cloud-security analysis.

Technical skills need to work alongside judgment and communication

ISC2’s workforce study also found hiring managers valued problem solving, collaboration, and communication, while cybersecurity professionals emphasized AI and cloud skills. That points to a combination rather than a single winning credential: technical capability helps you do the work, while sound judgment and clear communication help teams understand and act on security decisions. How to choose a skill to develop

Start with the work you can credibly move toward, not with the broadest salary claim. A cloud-focused path may make sense if your target roles involve cloud architecture, IAM, configuration, or data protection. AI-related learning may fit roles where teams are adopting AI tools and need people who can assess and validate their security outputs. The survey findings show these are reported skill needs, but they do not establish that either path pays more than the other.

  • Read job postings for your target role and location. Note which skills recur and whether employers ask for cloud, AI-related capability, incident response, or another specialty.
  • Build on what you already know. Experience in IT, networking, systems administration, software, or a related area may transfer more directly than starting with a credential unrelated to your background.
  • Look for practical work as well as study. The sources identify skill needs but do not show that a particular course, exam, or training product produces a salary increase.
  • Check the employer’s stated requirements. A certification is more relevant when target employers request or prefer it; a credential alone does not demonstrate a guaranteed pay outcome.

Do you need a degree or certification?

There is no single entry route established by these sources. BLS says information security analysts typically have a relevant bachelor’s degree and related work experience, and notes that some employers prefer certification. It also says some analysts come from IT roles such as network and computer systems administration; some workers enter through industry training and certifications. These are common qualifications, not a rule that every employer applies identically. BLS: Information Security Analysts.

ISC2’s 2025 study found that 56% of respondents reported entering cybersecurity through an IT pathway, while 36% said they first took on security responsibilities in IT before moving into a cybersecurity-focused role. Respondents also described routes through education, certification, self-study, military experience, and internships or apprenticeships. Those results describe survey participants’ reported paths; they are not a complete list of hiring rules. ISC2 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study.

Why certification salary figures do not prove a pay increase

ISC2’s 2026 certification salary article reports self-reported global median figures of $127,000 for CISSP holders and $118,840 for CCSP holders. These are medians among credential holders, not U.S.-only figures, and compensation varies by role, region, experience, and credential. The comparison is not a before-and-after study: it does not show what the same people earned before receiving a certification, nor isolate the credential’s effect from experience or job changes. It therefore cannot establish that earning either credential causes a raise or doubles pay. ISC2 certification salary analysis.

How to judge whether a move could materially raise your pay

A realistic estimate starts with your current compensation and a specific next role—not an occupation-wide median or credential-holder average.

  1. Choose a target job title and geography. Pay can differ by role and location, so compare positions you could actually apply for.
  2. Check the requirements in current postings. Separate skills employers require from those they prefer, and identify experience gaps.
  3. Compare your likely offer with your current total compensation. A higher occupation median does not tell you what an individual employer will offer.
  4. Account for the transition. Consider the time needed to gain relevant experience and whether you would be entering at a different level.
  5. Verify the return before paying for training or exams. The cited sources do not establish course prices, exam fees, or an individual return on investment.

A salary doubling is mathematically possible for some individuals—for example, when moving from a substantially lower-paid role into a higher-paid one—but the cited evidence does not identify a cybersecurity shift that reliably produces it. Treat a large raise as an outcome to validate against your own circumstances, not as a promise attached to AI, cloud security, or certification.
