The sauce behind the rave reviews is Kirkland Signature Imported Basil Pesto, a 22-ounce jar sold at Costco. Shoppers quoted by The Takeout praise its parmesan-forward flavor, value and versatility. That makes it a popular pick, not a proven universal winner: there is no documented side-by-side tasting here, and Costco prices and availability vary by channel and location.
Which pesto are customers raving about?
It is Kirkland Signature Imported Basil Pesto, Costco item 990551. Costco’s U.S. listing identifies a 22-ounce jar made with Genovese basil and describes it as “100% Imported Italian Basil D.O.P.” The listing says to keep it refrigerated.
The Takeout’s October 2, 2026 report quotes shoppers calling it “The BEST premade pesto out there” and “Kirkland pesto slaps.” Those are customer opinions reported by the publication, not the findings of a documented taste test. The Takeout also reported a 4.7-star rating from more than 240 reviews; the underlying review page was not independently checked.
What does the Costco pesto cost?
Prices depend on the listing and shopping channel. The Takeout reported a $9.99 price for the 22-ounce Costco jar on October 2, 2026. In the same article, it cited Rao’s 6.7-ounce jar at $5.99. Based on those reported prices, Kirkland works out to about $0.45 per ounce and Rao’s to about $0.90 per ounce. A separate Costco Same-Day listing showed the 22-ounce jar for $11.34 when accessed on October 3, 2026. That is a channel- and location-dependent listing, not a national warehouse price. Costco’s product page showed the item unavailable for the checked location when accessed on October 3, 2026.
Why do shoppers like it?
The Takeout’s reported comments point to three appeals: a parmesan-forward flavor, value and versatility. Those comments suggest why buyers recommend the pesto, but they do not establish that everyone will like its taste or that it beats every competing brand. Costco’s listing identifies the basil and origin claim, but the product summary reviewed here does not provide a complete ingredient declaration.

How much pesto comes in the jar, and how should you store it?
The 22-ounce size may be more than a small household can use quickly. Costco says to keep the pesto refrigerated, and The Takeout says the jar is sold in Costco’s refrigerated section rather than among shelf-stable sauces.
To portion it for later, The Takeout suggests freezing pesto in an ice cube tray, or freezing the jar and scraping out what you need. One anonymous commenter quoted in the article described putting the whole jar in the freezer and scraping out portions with a spoon. This is the publication’s reported tip, not tested storage guidance.

Is it really the best premade pesto?
It is a well-liked Costco option with a large jar and, at the prices The Takeout reported, a lower price per ounce than its cited Rao’s comparison. But an online rating and enthusiastic comments cannot settle a subjective taste question, and the available information does not document a controlled comparison. Whether it is your best choice depends on whether you can find it, like its flavor and can use or freeze the 22-ounce quantity.
