What ketamine does
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration describes ketamine as a dissociative drug with hallucinogenic effects. It can distort sight and sound and make a person feel detached from their body or surroundings. Depending on the circumstances, its effects may include sedation, immobility, reduced pain and amnesia. Why ketamine is used medically—and why it can be misused
Medical use
Ketamine has been marketed in the United States since the 1970s as a short-acting injectable anesthetic for humans and animals. It has accepted medical uses for anesthesia and short-term sedation. In a medical setting, its use is tied to a clinical purpose and professional care; that differs from nonmedical use, where effects such as dissociation, sedation and amnesia can create serious risks. Controlled status and misuse potential
In the United States, ketamine is a Schedule III non-narcotic controlled substance; the DEA’s 2024 guide dates that status to 1999. The guide notes potential for misuse and says physical dependence may be moderate or low, while psychological dependence may be high. This legal classification does not mean that every use is illicit: the drug has accepted medical uses, but it is controlled.

Ketamine is not the same as esketamine
Esketamine is the S(+) enantiomer of ketamine. The DEA guide says the FDA approved it in 2019 as a nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression, available through a certified doctor’s office or clinic. That approval and clinical context do not make esketamine interchangeable with ketamine: the products, routes, indications and supervision differ.
What has been reported about the Cornell case
According to the Associated Press on October 3, 2026, a woman sued Cornell University and seven former students. The lawsuit alleges that she was given ketamine and became incapacitated while members of the Chi Phi fraternity sexually assaulted her at a campus residence in October 2024. AP reported that she told campus police about the alleged assault roughly three weeks later and also spoke with university disciplinary investigators. These are allegations attributed to the plaintiff and her lawsuit, not established findings of criminal guilt. Associated Press, October 3, 2026

The investigation was active, with no predetermined outcome reported
AP reported that Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten initially declined to pursue charges after reviewing a police summary, then said key information had not been provided and reopened the investigation. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor. AP reported that James described a monthslong process with no predetermined outcome. The reporting does not establish a criminal charge or verdict.
Accounts of the alleged events differ
In AP’s September 29, 2026, report, the lawsuit alleges the plaintiff was pressured into ketamine, marijuana and alcohol. The prosecutor, discussing the initial sworn statement, said it did not allege that she had been intoxicated against her will, physically forced into sex or unconscious at the time. AP reported that police had not released that statement. Those are distinct accounts; the available reporting does not resolve the factual dispute. Associated Press, September 29, 2026

What ketamine’s effects can—and cannot—tell us about this case
Ketamine can affect perception, awareness, movement, pain and memory. But a drug’s known effects cannot prove that a person received it, establish its dose or timing, or determine whether someone was incapacitated in a specific situation. Those questions belong to the evidence and investigation, not to a general description of the drug. The Cornell claims should therefore remain attributed to the lawsuit and the reported statements of officials, rather than being presented as a medical conclusion or a finding of guilt.
