The second game delivered another flood of goals, but Edmonton—not Vancouver—won the Canucks’ home opener.

How Vancouver won opening night in Edmonton
The Canucks opened the season at Rogers Place on September 29 and came away with a 6–5 overtime win. Paul Cotter scored both the first and final Vancouver goals, including the overtime winner. The result was also Manny Malhotra’s first NHL win as a head coach, according to the Canucks’ recap and preview. Vancouver’s game recap
Vancouver’s coach acknowledged both the scoring and the defensive concern afterward. Malhotra said the team had “a lot of really good things” in scoring five goals, but also pointed to giving up three in the third period as an area to work on. The Canucks’ resiliency helped them stay in the game long enough for Cotter to decide it in overtime. Canucks preview, September 30

What happened in the Canucks home opener
Edmonton answered two days later with a 9–7 win at Rogers Arena on October 1, splitting the set. The Oilers built a substantial lead, and Vancouver narrowed the gap with a late push, but Edmonton held on for the win. Oilers/NHL recap, October 2
McDavid finished with five points (one goal, four assists), while Draisaitl recorded three (two goals, one assist). Reflecting on the game, McDavid said the first 40 minutes showed what the Oilers’ play “could look like a lot of the time” and “should look like a lot of the time.” That was his assessment of the opening two periods, not a guarantee about how the season would unfold. What “repeat opening night” meant for the rematch
The phrase fit the expectation of another high-energy, high-scoring matchup after Vancouver’s overtime thriller in Edmonton. The October 1 game matched that open, goal-heavy character, but not the first game’s winner: Edmonton scored nine and withstood Vancouver’s late rally. The result was a second dramatic night, rather than a repeat Canucks victory.
The NHL said the Oilers and Canucks were meeting for the eighth time in a mutual season-opening game in 2026–27. The September 29 matchup was part of Sportsnet’s Canadian opening-night doubleheader; that league listing does not establish carriage or streaming access in every market. NHL 2026–27 season overview
