The Clay Impress tools reviewed by GeekDad are aimed especially at polymer-clay jewelry makers: cutters, texture products, thickness guides and an earring-post embedder. Reviewer Dakster Sullivan’s September 25, 2026 review is positive about their ease of use and instructions, but it describes a selected group of tools—not the full Deluxe Polymer Clay Starter Kit—and notes that detailed textures and silk screens take practice.
What did GeekDad review?
Dakster Sullivan says she received a selection of The Clay Impress tools to try. It was not the complete Deluxe Polymer Clay Starter Kit, so her observations should not be read as a review of every item in that kit or as a controlled comparison against other brands. The review’s focus is hands-on polymer clay work, particularly jewelry and earrings.

The sample selection included three cutters—the Dragon Bookmark Charm, Book Stud and Soaring Dragon—along with a Dragon Scales texture roller, Botanical Bookshelf silk screen, Mushroom Meadow transfer sheets, Vintage Book Text texture sheet, 4 mm earring post embedder and 1.5 mm thickness guides. Sullivan’s conclusion was: “Yes. The Clay Impress lives up to their name and definitely impresses me with the quality of their products, ease of use, and especially in their instructions and tutorials for use.” That is her subjective assessment, not an independent product test. Color mixing and baking
Sullivan reports that her first clay color mix matched the accompanying PDF recipe and did not visibly change color after baking. That is one reviewer’s result with her materials and process; the review does not establish that every color recipe or oven setup will produce the same outcome.

Cutting and adding detail
For a small hole in the dragon design, she used wire to open the detail. She also dry-brushed gold mica powder over the finished piece to bring out its texture. These examples show how the cutters can be used as a starting point for detailed jewelry rather than as a complete, one-step finish.
Texture rollers and silk screens
The Dragon Scales roller took some adjustment: Sullivan found that rolling once in a single direction avoided what she called a “glitched effect.” For the Botanical Bookshelf silk screen, she applied acrylic paint and rinsed the screen immediately in cool water. Her account indicates a learning curve with these decorative techniques; it does not include comparative testing or a claim that every user will get identical results.

Is The Clay Impress useful for beginners?
It can be a fit for a beginner who wants to make patterned clay earrings or charms and values guided designs and instructions. The assortment includes specialty components—particularly shaped cutters, surface treatments and an embedder for earring posts—that go beyond a basic sculpting tool set. The review’s examples also make clear that more intricate patterns may need practice, especially when rolling texture or applying a screen.
The company’s starter-kit guide recommends working on a smooth ceramic or glass surface. It distinguishes oven-safe ceramic tile from picture-frame glass and glass craft mats, which it says should not go in the oven. How does the reviewed selection compare with the Deluxe Starter Kit?

The embedder sizes differ: Sullivan describes a 4 mm tool in her received selection, while the kit listing specifies a 5 mm embedder. Do not assume the review’s item and the listed kit contain the same version.

Sculpey’s Clay Tool Starter Set is a simpler option for general shaping and detail work. Its official listing describes three dual-ended tools with needle, knife, blunt-point and ball functions for detailing, cutting, shaping, making holes and smoothing. This set is not a like-for-like substitute for the The Clay Impress specialty items in the review: its listing does not describe shape cutters, decorative texture products or an earring-post embedder. It makes more sense for someone seeking a basic set of hand tools than for someone specifically building a patterned-earring workflow.

How should The Clay Impress tools be cared for?
The Clay Impress FAQ recommends gently removing clay from cutter details and avoiding sideways prying, which could break resin cutters. It says tools can be hand-washed with soap and water or isopropyl alcohol. For silk screens, it advises rinsing immediately in cool water so acrylic paint does not dry in the mesh and clog it. Who should consider these tools?
- Choose a specialty set or individual Clay Impress designs if your main project is patterned earrings, charms or other small clay work and you will use the cutters, textures or post embedder.
- Consider the Deluxe kit if you want a wider collection that also lists clay, recipes, findings and a ceramic work surface. Its listing was sold out at the displayed price on October 4, 2026, so verify current availability directly.
- Start with a basic sculpting set if you mainly need tools for shaping, cutting, poking holes and smoothing, rather than specialized earring-making accessories.
The Clay Impress says it is based in Hawaii, began in 2020, makes its tool range in-house and has a patent-pending tool designed to embed earring posts in studs. Those are company statements rather than independently verified findings. See the company’s About page.
