A black rectangle placed over text in a PDF may only cover it visually; the underlying content can remain in the file. To remove sensitive information, use a PDF editor’s actual redaction feature, apply the redaction, consider sanitizing hidden data, then save and inspect the processed copy before sharing it.
Why a black box may not hide PDF content
A drawn shape or annotation can change what appears on the page without deleting the text or image beneath it. A recipient may still be able to select, copy, search for, or otherwise expose that content. Seeing a black rectangle is therefore not proof that the underlying information has been removed.

Adobe describes its redaction feature as permanently hiding sensitive information from a PDF. That is Adobe’s description of its product, not an independent standards definition. The essential distinction is between an overlay that obscures content and an applied redaction that removes the selected content from the document.

Redaction addresses selected visible content, such as text or an image. Sanitization addresses hidden information that may remain elsewhere in the file. Adobe gives metadata and embedded content as examples, and its removal workflow also lists comments, attachments, scripts, and hidden layers.

Applying a visible redaction does not by itself establish that hidden data has been removed. Consider both operations when preparing a sensitive PDF for release. Which hidden information a particular editor can find or remove depends on that product and its workflow.
Apply a redaction in Adobe Acrobat Pro
Adobe’s documented Acrobat Pro workflow is product-specific; interface names can change. Work on a copy first, and save the processed document under a different name.

- Open the redaction tool: Open the PDF and choose Redact a PDF.
- Mark the content: Select the text or image to remove.
- Apply the redaction: Choose Apply to carry out the marked redactions.
- Choose whether to sanitize: Decide whether to remove hidden information as part of the workflow.
- Save the processed copy: Continue through the prompts and save the sanitized document under a different name.

Find repeated sensitive text before applying changes
If the same name, account number, or phrase appears more than once, Adobe documents a search workflow that can locate a word, phrase, multiple phrases, or patterns, mark matching results for redaction, and then apply the changes. This can help find repeated instances, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the document: check for other occurrences and inspect the saved output.

Check the saved PDF before sharing it
- Open the saved copy, not just the working document, and review each redacted area.
- Try searching the saved PDF for the sensitive terms you removed.
- Check that the redaction did not leave nearby text or images exposed.
- Review whether hidden information also needs to be sanitized, including metadata, comments, attachments, scripts, hidden layers, or embedded content.
- Share the processed copy rather than the original or an unprocessed working file.
These checks reduce the chance of relying on appearance alone; they are not a guarantee that every editor or inspection method will reveal every hidden element.

What is—and isn’t—established about failed redactions
The cited Adobe pages explain the company’s product workflow. They do not establish how often PDF redactions fail, provide a statistic about their impact, or compare multiple PDF editors. No prevalence figure should be inferred from product instructions or from a reader’s description of the concern.
