There is no proven universal winner. Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO (AIOSEO), and SEOPress all cover the essential WordPress SEO jobs. The best choice depends on the workflow you prefer, the schema and redirect controls you need, your integrations, and which features are included in your plan.
This article keeps the original 2024 comparison in view but uses plugin-directory and vendor information observed on September 30, 2026. Current installation counts and AI features should not be read as evidence of what each plugin offered in 2024.

What should you look for in a WordPress SEO plugin?
Most established plugins can generate XML sitemaps, edit titles and meta descriptions, add canonical information, and provide some form of on-page analysis. The meaningful differences are in how those controls are presented, what is restricted to paid tiers, and how well the plugin fits your site.
- Setup and editorial feedback: New site owners usually benefit from a clear wizard and understandable page-level recommendations.
- Schema and sitemaps: Check the schema types you actually need, not the total number advertised.
- Redirects and 404 handling: These matter when URLs change or a site is redesigned.
- Local, WooCommerce, and multilingual support: Confirm the exact extension, language plugin, and plan required.
- Integrations: Search Console, Analytics, page builders, social metadata, and ecommerce tools can reduce separate setup work.
- Migration and administration: Importer coverage, site limits, renewals, and the complexity you are willing to manage are often more important than a long feature list.
No independent controlled comparison establishes that one of these plugins consistently produces higher rankings, more traffic, or faster pages. Vendor claims about performance are not substitutes for independent testing.

Quick comparison
| Plugin | Best fit | Capabilities described in current listings | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yoast SEO | Editors who want established, guided on-page recommendations | Real-time SEO guidance, schema, and AI-related features | The WordPress.org directory displayed more than 10 million active installations on September 30, 2026. That is a current directory figure, not a 2024 count or proof of superior results. |
| Rank Math | Users who want a modular dashboard and broad integrations | Modules, schema types, content analysis, XML sitemaps, Search Console and Analytics integrations, redirects, 404 monitoring, internal-link suggestions, local SEO, and migration tools | Its speed advantages are vendor claims, not independent benchmark results. Feature availability depends on the selected tier. |
| All in One SEO (AIOSEO) | Site owners who want a guided setup and a wide range of built-in controls | Setup wizard, on-page analysis, schema, local SEO, XML sitemaps, link assistance, redirects, canonical URLs, social metadata, WooCommerce SEO, integrations, and importers | Confirm the plan for each required feature; the listing is vendor-authored. |
| SEOPress | Users seeking a modular, freemium plugin and broad migration support | SEO controls, XML sitemaps, schema-related features, redirects, and migration from several alternatives, including Yoast, Rank Math, and AIOSEO | Its comparison-pricing page says figures exclude taxes and were last checked July 21, 2025. Treat that table as historical guidance and verify live checkout pricing, renewals, and site limits. |
Yoast SEO: the familiar guided workflow
Yoast SEO is the most prominent of the four by current WordPress.org directory reach, with more than 10 million active installations displayed in the September 30, 2026 listing. Its positioning centers on real-time SEO guidance, structured data, and newer AI features.
Choose it when writers need consistent page-level prompts and the team values a widely recognized interface. Before buying an upgrade, check whether the schema controls, redirects, ecommerce functions, or other requirements are included in the relevant edition. The current listing does not establish that every present feature existed in 2024.
Rank Math: modular controls and integrations
Rank Math presents SEO functions as modules that can be enabled as needed. Its listing describes schema types, content analysis, XML sitemaps, Search Console and Analytics connections, redirects, a 404 monitor, internal-link suggestions, local SEO, and migration from other plugins. The directory displayed more than four million active installations on September 30, 2026.

This approach can suit an advanced administrator who wants many controls in one dashboard, but the number of modules can also increase configuration decisions. Rank Math’s listing makes performance claims; regard them as vendor statements rather than independently measured speed results. Confirm the plan boundary for any module central to your site.
All in One SEO (AIOSEO): broad features behind a setup wizard
AIOSEO emphasizes a setup wizard and combines on-page analysis with schema, local SEO, XML sitemaps, redirects, canonical URLs, social metadata, link assistance, integrations, and WooCommerce SEO. Its importer is described as supporting metadata migration from Yoast, Rank Math, and SEOPress.
It is a practical candidate for a new site owner who wants a guided initial configuration, or for a site that needs several SEO areas in one product. “Included” is plan-dependent: verify the exact tier for local SEO, WooCommerce controls, redirects, link tools, and other features before committing.
SEOPress: freemium and migration-oriented
SEOPress describes itself as modular and freemium. Its directory listing highlights migration from several competing plugins, including Yoast, Rank Math, and AIOSEO, which can reduce manual recreation of existing metadata.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check the live price, renewal amount, tax treatment, and permitted number of sites at checkout. This matters especially for agencies managing multiple installations.
Which plugin fits your site?
Starting a new site
Begin with the setup flow you can understand and maintain. List the schema types, redirects, analytics connections, and editorial checks you will actually use, then ensure they are available in the free or paid tier you intend to run.

Replacing an existing SEO plugin
Compare importer scope before switching. Create a complete backup and test the migration on staging; vendor-described importers are not evidence that every custom field, taxonomy, redirect, or template setting will transfer perfectly. Keep one primary SEO plugin active rather than overlapping several plugins that output the same metadata.
Local or ecommerce business
Verify the exact local SEO and WooCommerce functions, including their plan limits. A feature name in a listing does not tell you whether it covers your locations, product schema, catalog structure, or required integrations.

Check current compatibility for your specific language plugin and configuration. WPML’s compatibility resource evaluates Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO, SEOPress, and The SEO Framework, but compatibility can change with plugin versions and site architecture.

Agency or multisite operator
Compare the number of permitted sites, user and client workflows, renewal terms, and support arrangements at checkout. A low introductory price is not enough if the renewal or site allowance does not fit your portfolio.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection checklist
- Write down the required functions: titles and descriptions, schema, sitemaps, redirects, 404 monitoring, local SEO, WooCommerce, analytics, and multilingual compatibility.
- Mark which requirements must be free and which can be paid.
- Install only one primary SEO plugin on a staging copy.
- Test representative posts, pages, taxonomies, products, and redirects.
- Inspect the generated metadata and sitemap, then check Search Console after launch.
- Record the plan price, renewal, taxes, and site allowance from the current checkout page.
How the 2024 label should be read
A genuinely historical “best for 2024” ranking would require dated 2024 documentation for features, plans, and installation counts. The evidence available here is current to September 2026, so it supports a present-day buying decision and a comparison of the four established candidates, not a claim that their current interfaces or AI functions were available in 2024.
The Bottom Line
Pick the plugin whose workflow, required integrations, migration path, and plan limits match your site. Yoast SEO is a strong guided choice; Rank Math suits modular, integration-heavy setups; AIOSEO favors wizard-led breadth; and SEOPress is worth considering when freemium operation and migration support matter. None has been shown here to deliver inherently better rankings.
