You can remap buttons and adjust vibration on Nintendo Switch 2 using the controller you already own. Button mappings are configured for each controller, while the vibration setting applies to all paired controllers. Start with the changes you need, then save a mapping preset or reset it if the controls become confusing.
How to adjust controller vibration
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Controllers & Accessories.
- Toggle Controller Vibration on or off.
When you turn vibration on, the controller used to change the setting briefly vibrates. The setting then applies to all paired controllers. Nintendo calls the system’s feature HD Rumble 2; Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta described it as stronger, more realistic and quicker to respond than original HD Rumble in Nintendo’s developer interview. Those are Nintendo’s product characterizations, not independent comparative measurements.
How to remap or disable a button
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Change Button Mapping.
- Select the controller you want to configure, then choose Change.
- Select a button. Choose an available function to assign to it, or select Disable.
- Select Done to confirm.
Button remapping is supported for Joy-Con 2 (L/R), Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R), Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, and the buttons on Nintendo Switch Lite, according to Nintendo’s button-mapping instructions.
What can and cannot be remapped
- Reserved controls: POWER, Volume, HOME and SYNC cannot be remapped, and their functions cannot be assigned to another button.
- Stick directions: You cannot assign stick directions to buttons. You can swap the left- and right-stick inputs.
- Where changes apply: Nintendo says custom mappings work in nearly all situations, including games and system menus. Some controller-testing and calibration tasks are exceptions.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ also covers changing stick orientation when Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controllers are used horizontally. The available options can depend on the controller and how it is held, so check the on-screen choices for your setup rather than assuming that a grip-specific instruction for an original Switch applies to Switch 2.

Save, load or reset a controller mapping
Save and load presets
You can save a custom configuration in one of five preset slots. Presets can be loaded onto another controller of the same type—for example, another left Joy-Con 2—but not onto a different controller type. Mappings are stored on the console, so they do not travel with a controller to another system. See Nintendo’s mapping instructions for the console steps.
Reset a mapping
To restore the default controls, open the mapping screen, select the controller and choose Reset. Nintendo also says you can reset button mappings through Quick Settings. If you wake the console from sleep after changing a mapping, it may offer an option to reset the controller inputs. A wrench icon on a controller indicates that it has a custom mapping.

Which controller should you configure?
There is no need to buy a new controller just to remap buttons or change vibration. Configure the supported controller you already use. If you are choosing between Joy-Con 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, consider whether you want attached or handheld controls or a separate controller, along with its grip and shape; the settings themselves do not make either option better for remapping. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 Pro Controller among its accessories and documents its mapping support in the controller-mapping guide.
