MUBI adds another curated discovery option, while Kanopy may be available through a participating library or institution. None should be treated as a complete replacement for owning a disc; choose a service for what it helps you watch and discover, and choose a physical edition when its presentation, extras, or continued access matter to you.
Which streaming services suit physical-media collectors?
| Service | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Criterion Channel | Collectors who want curated film discovery connected to Criterion’s disc catalog | Criterion describes the service as offering new films and monthly curated collections. Its separate physical releases may include restored transfers and supplements; availability and extras vary by release. Criterion Channel and Criterion’s mission |
| MUBI | Viewers looking for curated discovery, including classic and international films | MUBI says HD and 4K are available when possible; actual quality depends on the connection and device, and not every film is available in 4K. MUBI video quality guidance |
| Kanopy | Viewers whose library or academic institution provides access | Access depends on institutional participation. Kanopy says it works with over 4,000 libraries and 158 million library cardholders worldwide; these are figures published by the service, not a guarantee of access for an individual reader. Streaming and collecting serve different purposes. The channel’s programming can help you decide what to watch; a disc edition may be more appealing when you specifically want its restoration, commentary, or other release-specific supplements. The available sources do not establish that every Criterion disc is streamable on the channel, or that the channel’s catalog is permanent.

When MUBI makes sense
MUBI is another curated route into film discovery, particularly for viewers drawn to classic and international cinema. Its stated video-quality policy is conditional: it offers HD and 4K when possible and adjusts quality to the viewer’s device and connection. MUBI also notes that good HD versions of many classic and international films do not yet exist. Its guidance, last updated May 13, 2026, is not a promise that every title streams in 4K or looks identical to a disc.
For collectors, the practical approach is to check the specific film rather than assume a service-wide format. If presentation is a deciding factor, look for the title’s available stream quality and compare it with the format and restoration details of the disc edition.

When Kanopy is worth checking
Kanopy is worth considering if your public library, university, or other participating institution offers it. The service is aimed at libraries and academia, so access is not simply a matter of choosing a standard streaming plan. Check your institution’s current access instructions and catalog; the service’s reported global reach does not mean every library participates or that a particular film is available to you.
How to decide between streaming and a disc
- Start with the film, not the brand. Search the service’s current catalog for the directors, countries, genres, or individual titles you actually want to watch.
- Stream for convenient discovery. Curated collections can help you find films without committing to a physical edition first.
- Buy a disc for a particular edition. Check the release’s restoration, format, commentary, and other supplements; features vary title by title.
- Consider access and territory. Library participation affects Kanopy access, while disc region coding can affect playback.
- Verify current practical details. Prices, device support, catalogs, and country availability are not established here and can change; confirm them with the service before signing up.
Criterion’s FAQ says its 4K discs require a 4K player. It describes its 4K discs as region-free, while its DVDs are Region 1 and Blu-rays generally Region A under the U.S. and Canada rights it describes, with exceptions. Confirm the coding of a specific release and compatibility with your player before buying. The FAQ also explains that a 4K restoration on a standard Blu-ray is presented at 1080 HD, while a 4K disc presents it at UHD resolution. That format distinction alone does not establish that a disc will look better than every stream in every playback setup. Criterion’s FAQ

What the physical-media market figures do—and do not—show
Physical media remains a distinct collecting format, but the available U.S. sales figures are historical rather than a measure of today’s market. The Digital Entertainment Group’s preliminary report for the first half of 2024 put physical-product sell-through spending at $451.40 million, down 22.19% year over year. In the same period, catalog 4K UHD Blu-ray sales grew 16% and SteelBook sales grew 44%. These figures describe different slices of the market and do not establish that a particular streaming service or disc format is best for an individual viewer.
