If you have just watched Brian De Palma’s 1976 Carrie, the best next Stephen King adaptation depends on what you want more of: a tight suspense story, supernatural unease, or a drama centered on its characters. My shortlist starts with Misery for contained tension, The Dead Zone or Doctor Sleep for a supernatural turn, and The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile for drama over horror. These are viewing paths, not an objective ranking: Stephen King’s official catalog verifies adaptations and dates, but does not rank their quality.
Choose by the mood you want after Carrie
De Palma’s 1976 film is the reference point here. King’s official catalog lists it alongside a wide range of film and television adaptations, including the titles below. The catalog is useful for confirming that they are King adaptations; the recommendations that follow are editorial suggestions about what to try next, not a critics’ poll or a claim of consensus.

| If you want… | Try | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Another tense, contained story | Misery | A natural direction if you want to stay with suspense rather than switch to a broader drama. |
| Supernatural or speculative fiction | The Dead Zone or Doctor Sleep | Both offer a change of lane from Carrie’s high-school horror premise. |
| Character-led drama instead of horror | The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile | Choose these if your interest is in a King adaptation beyond the horror category. |
| A serialized story | A King television adaptation | Pick a series if you prefer episodes and a longer commitment to a feature-length film. |
The official catalog confirms these titles as adaptations, but it does not provide a quality ranking or establish current streaming availability. Catalogs differ by service, country, and date, so check your local listings before settling on a watch.
For more contained suspense: Misery
Try Misery if what held your attention in Carrie was the pressure of a story that keeps its focus tight. It is the shortlist’s suspense-first option, rather than a recommendation to seek out another supernatural story. King’s official catalog confirms the adaptation; this recommendation is based on the kind of viewing mood it offers, not a sourced critical ranking.
#1 Best Overall
For a supernatural change of pace: The Dead Zone or Doctor Sleep
If you want to stay in speculative territory without simply repeating Carrie’s premise, choose between The Dead Zone and Doctor Sleep. Both appear in King’s official video catalog as adaptations. Treat them as alternatives for a supernatural turn, rather than as a ranked pair: the catalog confirms their place in King’s screen work but does not compare their quality.
For drama rather than horror: The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile
When you want to move away from horror, consider The Shawshank Redemption or The Green Mile. Both are listed in King’s official catalog, making them verified options for someone exploring adaptations beyond Carrie. This is the drama-oriented route in the shortlist; choose it when a change of genre matters more than finding another frightening story.
Choose a film or a series based on your time
A feature film is the simpler choice when you want a single sitting; a television adaptation asks for an episodic commitment. King’s catalog includes both films and television work, so format can be a useful filter before you choose a title. Do not assume that a title is available on a particular service just because it appears in a catalog: rights and streaming libraries vary by territory and change over time.
Should you watch the new Carrie series?
If you meant the announced Prime Video series rather than De Palma’s 1976 film, the starting point is different: it is another screen adaptation of Carrie, not a next-title recommendation. Stephen King’s official page describes it as an eight-episode adaptation of the novel and lists an October 7, 2026 release date; Amazon’s announcement gives the same date for all eight episodes. Those pages put the release three days ahead as of October 4, 2026, so it should not be described as already available at that date. The official page credits Mike Flanagan as writer and executive producer, and King as executive producer. Stephen King’s official Carrie series page and Amazon’s announcement have the announced details.
Rank #3
Read the novel if you want to compare adaptations
King’s Carrie novel is an optional companion if you want to compare the source story with its screen versions; it is not necessary to enjoy the films. The official series page identifies the announced 2026 show as an adaptation of the novel. King’s official video works catalog is a useful way to find additional candidates, but it is not a guide to which one is best or where to stream it. Netflix’s Stephen King Movies and Series on Netflix to Watch Right Now is explicitly about Netflix and does not establish availability of these picks in every country.
