The Best Powered Speakers for Turntables in 2024

The right powered speaker depends first on your turntable's PHONO or LINE output. Compare the Kanto YU6, Audioengine A5+ Wireless, Edifier R1280DB and KEF LSX II by phono support, room size, connectivity and upgrade potential.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most turntable owners, the Kanto YU6 is the easiest all-around choice: it accepts a phono-level signal directly, includes Bluetooth and optical inputs, and provides a subwoofer output for later expansion. The Audioengine A5+ Wireless is a better match for larger rooms if you already have a phono preamp. The Edifier R1280DB keeps cost and size down, while the KEF LSX II is the premium streaming option—but it also requires a line-level turntable output or separate phono stage.

The critical question is not simply which speaker sounds best. It is whether your turntable outputs PHONO or LINE, whether the speakers accept that signal, and whether their size and features fit your room.

What powered speakers change in a turntable system

Powered speakers contain their own amplifiers, so you do not need a separate stereo receiver or power amplifier. A typical system is:

Saiyin Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers
  • 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 5.3 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬: Pair the bookshelf speakers with your smartphone, tablet, Mac, or PC to play music wirelessly, no need to deal with messy wires. To use your turntable with our Bluetooth speakers: Your turntable must have Bluetooth transmitter/output(for connecting Bluetooth speakers and headphones). If your turntable only has a Bluetooth receiver/input (like most built-in speaker turntables for connecting mobile phones), it won’t work with our speakers. Check your turntable’s specs before ordering!
  • 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐬 : The speakers are built with Optical and coaxial inputs and Convenient connection to any device that has a 3.5 mm headphone output or dual RCA output; The Speakers can be Connected with Record Player Directly via LINE OUT, while a Preamplifier is Required if the Record Player has only PHONO output; Plug the speaker wire into "L SPK OUT" on the main to Connect the two speakers
  • 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 & 𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥: The active bookshelf speaker(𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 : 𝟓.𝟑 𝐖*𝟔.𝟑 𝐃*𝟖.𝟔𝐇 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡) comes with a remote control allowing you to adjust the volume and toggle inputs at your fingertips: mute/unmute, switch to OPT/COAX mode, line-in, and Bluetooth modes. Remote is replaceable lifetime. You can also control the speakers via buttons on top of it; Remote is compatible with Fire TV stick
  • 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬: This is a pair of active and passive bookshelf speakers which do not require a pre amp, and also built with 0.5 inch silk dome HORN tweeter and 𝟑.𝟕𝟓 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐫, bringing you a surround home theater listening experience
  • 𝐀𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝, and If you still want to use amplifier or receiver with the bookshelf speakers, please connect via Line Out of the amplifier or receiver.
  1. Turntable
  2. Phono preamp, built into the turntable, built into the speakers, or separate
  3. Powered left and right speakers
  4. Speaker cable between the active and passive speaker, where the design requires it

“Powered” and “active” are often used interchangeably, although manufacturers do not apply those terms consistently. Passive speakers still require an external amplifier.

Check the phono signal before buying

Every turntable signal must reach the speakers at an appropriate line level. RCA plugs do not tell you whether a signal is phono or line level.

Turntable output Speaker input What you need
Set to LINE RCA, AUX or other line input Direct connection
Set to PHONO Speaker phono input and ground terminal Direct connection
PHONO only Line inputs only External phono preamp
Built-in preamp with Bluetooth transmitter Bluetooth receiver Wireless pairing can work
USB only Standard RCA inputs USB-to-analog conversion or another output

Connecting a raw phono output to a normal line input usually produces very low volume and an incorrect tonal balance.

Best overall: Kanto YU6

The YU6 is the most flexible direct-connect option in this group. Kanto lists a phono/line input, Bluetooth, optical inputs, analog connectivity and a subwoofer output in its product catalog (Kanto product catalog). The phono input also has a ground connection, and SoundGuys identifies the YU6 as a turntable-friendly powered speaker (SoundGuys turntable-speaker guide).

Electrohome Huntley Powered Bookshelf Speakers with Built-in Amplifier and 3" Drivers for Turntable, TV, PC and Wireless Music Streaming Featuring Bluetooth 5, RCA and Aux (EB10B)

  • MULTIPLE CONNECTIONS WITH BLUETOOTH 5 - Connect seamlessly to multiple sources through RCA, Aux-In or Bluetooth 5 to enjoy your favorite music, podcasts and videos anywhere

Why it fits most systems

  • A turntable with a raw phono output can connect directly when the YU6 is set to PHONO.
  • A turntable with its own preamp can use the YU6’s line input with the turntable set to LINE.
  • Optical input handles a television or other digital source.
  • Bluetooth adds convenient playback from phones and tablets.
  • The subwoofer output leaves room to improve bass without replacing the speakers.

Limits to understand

The integrated phono stage is primarily a convenience feature. It may offer less cartridge and loading flexibility than a separate phono preamp, and the built-in electronics are not as independently replaceable. Room-size guidance is approximate: placement, listening distance and volume preference still determine whether a bookshelf system is sufficient.

Best for a larger room: Audioengine A5+ Wireless

Audioengine lists RCA and 3.5mm analog inputs, Bluetooth, and 50 watts RMS per channel for the A5+ Wireless (Audioengine technical specifications). Its larger cabinet and 5-inch-class woofer give it a stronger scale than compact desktop speakers, making it a sensible choice for a small-to-medium living room.

There is an essential qualification: Audioengine says a phono preamp is required before connecting a turntable (Audioengine technical specifications). Use a turntable’s built-in preamp set to LINE, or place an external phono preamp between a phono-only turntable and the A5+.

The left speaker contains the amplification, so plan the speaker-to-speaker cable route and outlet placement. This model suits listeners who want a substantial analog-oriented speaker after the preamp stage rather than a one-box direct phono connection.

Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers -2.0 Near Field Studio Monitor
  • 2 x AUX INPUT - Convenient connection to any device that has a 3.5mm headphone output or dual RCA output. Connect to two devices via AUX at the same time, no plugging and switching needed.
  • STUDIO SOUND QUALITY - Natural sound reproduction from 13mm silk dome tweeter and 4 inch full range unit
  • REMOTE CONTROL - Adjust volume at your figure tips. Bass and treble control located on the side of main speaker.
  • CLASSIC WOOD FINISH - High quality MDF wood build finished with wood effect vinyl serves as a great compliment to any home decor.
  • SIDE PANEL CONTROLS - Use the side panel knobs to adjust the EQ to your liking. The controls are located on the active/powered speaker.

Best budget choice: Edifier R1280DB

The R1280DB is a compact powered stereo system with Bluetooth, optical connectivity and a remote. SoundGuys presents it as a low-cost turntable-speaker option, while B&H places the R1280T family in the entry-level bookshelf category (SoundGuys; B&H eXplora).

It is best for a desk, bedroom or small listening room. Verify that your exact R1280DB version and turntable provide a line-level path; otherwise budget for an external phono preamp. The smaller cabinet cannot provide the same bass authority or comfortable high-volume output as the larger models, particularly in a large room.

Best premium wireless system: KEF LSX II

The LSX II is aimed at buyers who want compact premium speakers for records, network streaming and other digital sources. What Hi-Fi notes that it has no built-in phono stage, so the turntable must provide line-level output or be connected through an external phono preamp (What Hi-Fi turntable-speaker guide).

Choose it when streaming and network-audio features matter as much as vinyl. It is unnecessary complexity and expense for someone who only wants an inexpensive wired record player system.

Rank #4
Audio-Technica AT-SP3X Bookshelf Speakers
  • Compact bookshelf speakers are specially tuned to deliver impressive, full-range audio
  • Speakers are equipped with dual RCA jacks for wired connection and Bluetooth technology for wireless connection
  • Multipoint pairing function allows you to stay connected to two Bluetooth devices at once
  • Power button with LED indicator and volume control dial provide easy operation
  • Includes an AC adapter with three international plug adapters and a 6.6' (2.0 m) speaker cable

Is a built-in phono preamp better?

Not automatically. It mainly reduces boxes, cables and setup decisions. A separate phono stage can provide more gain and cartridge-loading choices, may support moving-coil cartridges, and is easier to replace during an upgrade. Many integrated phono inputs are intended for moving-magnet cartridges; check the speaker’s documentation before using a moving-coil cartridge.

Match speaker size to the room

Desktop or small room

An R1280DB-class speaker is often adequate when you sit close and listen at moderate levels.

Small-to-medium living room

The YU6 or A5+ offers more useful scale. The YU6 is the simpler direct-phono choice; the A5+ favors owners who already have a phono stage.

Large room or loud listening

Consider a larger active system, a subwoofer, or passive speakers with an integrated amplifier. Compact bookshelf speakers may play loudly in a specification, yet still sound strained or bass-limited at a distance.

PreSonus Eris Accent — 50W Powered Bookshelf Speakers (Pair)
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY STEREO SOUND — 50W powered bookshelf speakers connect straight to record players, computers, TVs, and receivers via RCA or 1/8” AUX — no software, no fuss.
  • STUDIO-TUNED AUDIO — A 4” woofer and silk-dome tweeter deliver natural highs, clear mids, and warm lows for music, movies, and vinyl.
  • SIMPLE CONTROLS — Front-panel Volume, Bass, and Treble let you shape the sound to your space.
  • EXPANDABLE — RCA sub-out supports adding a subwoofer down the line.
  • DESIGNED TO BLEND IN — Stained wood-grain finish and compact footprint suit any desk, shelf, or living room.

Woofer diameter alone does not predict sound quality. Cabinet volume, porting, placement, listening distance and bass management all matter. Keep tweeters near ear height, leave sensible space from walls, and avoid placing the turntable on the same resonant surface as a bass-heavy speaker.

Connectivity that matters

  • RCA or phono: essential for a wired turntable connection.
  • Optical: useful for a television or other digital source.
  • Bluetooth: convenient for phones, tablets and turntables that transmit Bluetooth.
  • Subwoofer output: valuable for extending bass without replacing the main pair.
  • HDMI ARC, USB or network audio: useful in mixed-use systems, but not required for playing records.

Bluetooth is not inherently wrong for vinyl, but it changes the path from a direct wired analog connection to wireless transmission. Pairing, codec support, distance and interference affect the result; a wired RCA connection avoids those variables.

Exact setup paths

Turntable to a speaker phono input

  1. Connect the turntable’s RCA leads to the speaker’s phono input.
  2. Attach the turntable ground wire to the speaker ground terminal if provided.
  3. Select PHONO on the speaker.
  4. Start at low volume and raise it gradually.
  5. If playback is very quiet or thin, recheck the input selector and ground connection.

Turntable with a built-in preamp

  1. Set the turntable to LINE.
  2. Connect its RCA leads to the speaker’s RCA or AUX input.
  3. Select that input on the speaker.
  4. Do not send a line-level signal through a second phono preamp.

Turntable without a preamp and speakers without a phono input

  1. Connect the turntable to an external phono preamp.
  2. Connect the turntable’s ground wire to the preamp ground terminal.
  3. Run the preamp’s line output to the powered speakers.
  4. Select the speakers’ line input and control volume from the speakers or remote.

Troubleshoot hum, weak sound and feedback

  • Confirm the PHONO/LINE setting at both ends.
  • Reseat every RCA plug and the ground wire.
  • Separate signal cables from power bricks and crowded power strips.
  • Try a different outlet or power arrangement if the preamp and turntable share a noisy source.
  • Inspect cartridge and tonearm wiring if the hum changes when the arm moves.
  • Move the turntable farther from the speakers if hum varies with position.
  • Use an isolation platform or suitable stand if bass causes acoustic feedback; separating the turntable and speakers can help with the YU6 as well (Popular Science powered-speaker review).

When passive speakers and an amplifier make more sense

Powered speakers minimize components, but their built-in amplifier is tied to the speaker system. If that electronics section fails, the pair may need service. A passive-speaker system with a separate integrated amplifier is more modular: you can replace the phono stage, amplifier or speakers independently, add more inputs, and scale more easily for a large room.

Choose passive equipment when long-term upgrade flexibility and a dedicated phono stage matter more than the compactness of a powered pair.
