How to choose between keyboard types
- Start with layout. Decide whether you need a number pad, dedicated navigation keys and a function row. A full-size board preserves these; a 60% board saves desk space by omitting them.
- Consider switch feel and sound. Mechanical switches offer a distinct typing feel, but many mechanical boards can be noisy. If sound matters more than customization or a particular mechanical feel, a membrane keyboard may be a better fit.
- Match features to how you use the keyboard. Gaming-specific polling or trigger features, a volume knob, backlighting and wireless connectivity matter only if they suit your setup and habits.
- Account for comfort and portability. A heavy full-size board may be less convenient to move. For long typing sessions, pay attention to comfort and ergonomics rather than assuming a category award guarantees a good fit for you.
- Check the total cost and compatibility. Compare current prices and confirm that the connection type, operating-system support and any switch or keycap replacements suit your exact board.
