The best instant cameras depend on how you like to make pictures: choose the Polaroid Mod for dedicated analog effects, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 99 for creative controls on Mini film, or the simpler Instax Mini 13 for easier framing and automatic exposure. If you’re searching for the “best instant cameras” or asking “which instant camera is right for you?”, start with two choices: whether you want to preview images digitally before printing, and which print shape suits your work.
How to choose an instant camera for creative work
Instant cameras differ not just in image style but in how much control they give you before the shutter fires. A camera with built-in analog effects makes experimentation part of each exposure; a hybrid camera lets you review images digitally and decide which ones to print. Film format also affects the look and size of the finished picture.

- Choose analog if you want every exposure to be a physical-film photograph and enjoy working with effects or exposure controls in-camera.
- Choose hybrid if you want a digital preview and the option to print selected images. Fujifilm categorizes its cameras as analog, hybrid, or digital, with the Mini Evo and Wide Evo in its hybrid range (Fujifilm’s camera catalog).
- Choose a format deliberately: Fujifilm’s catalog distinguishes Mini, Square, and Wide film, and describes Wide as twice as wide as Mini. The Polaroid Mod uses i-Type or 600 film (Fujifilm’s camera catalog; Polaroid Mod product page).
Film is a recurring purchase, and the camera has to match the film format you intend to use. Prices and availability vary by region and date, so check local film options and current costs before choosing.

Polaroid Mod: best for built-in physical creative modes
The Polaroid Mod is a fully analog camera with a dedicated dial for four effects: Double Exposure, Split Shot, Motion Freeze, and Light Painting. A separate brightness dial adjusts exposure and mood. Polaroid also lists two-lens autofocus and includes its Split Shot accessory; the camera is compatible with i-Type and 600 film (Polaroid Mod product page).
#1 Best Overall
- Compact and cute design. Easily twist the lens to turn on and off
- Built-in selfie mirror for easy selfies Close-up mode with parallax correction
- Features automatic exposure and flash control for bright photos that are not “washed-out”
- Prints out high-quality, 2” x 3” INSTAX MINI instant photos in approximately five seconds (Development time thereafter is approximately 90 seconds). Uses INSTAX MINI instant film, which is sold separately.
- Includes: Hand strap, user manual, (2) AA batteries and 1-year limited warranty
This is the strongest fit in this group if you want creative options close at hand and prefer Polaroid’s physical-print workflow. Its effects are manufacturer-described features, not evidence of a comparative image-quality win. Polaroid’s support guide similarly positions the Mod for people exploring analog creativity (Polaroid camera guide).
Fujifilm Instax Mini 99: best for creative control on Mini film
The analog Mini 99 offers a different set of ways to shape a shot: Fujifilm’s 2024 feature sheet lists bulb mode, double exposure, indoor and sports modes, a color-effect dial, brightness control, a manual vignette switch, and automatic flash. It also lists automatic exposure (Instax Mini 99 feature sheet).

- Wearable and take anywhere-able: As the Polaroid’s smallest instant camera, the Polaroid Go fits in almost every bag, tote, pocket and pack. So you can capture real life wherever, whenever.
- Takes clearer, brighter, even nicer pictures: Thanks to the large aperture range, precise light sensor and on-point-exposure settings, the Polaroid Go Generation 2 image quality is better than ever.
- Built-in selfie mirror: Say cheese to yourself in the Polaroid Go’s reflective viewfinder – aka ‘selfie mirror’.
- Double-exposure and self-timer modes: Take photos so nice you shot them twice with double-exposure mode. Or set up the perfect self-portrait with the touch of the self timer button.
- Shoots pocketable Polaroid Go film and shoots 15 film packs with a single charge.
Consider it if you want multiple exposure and color options while staying with Instax Mini prints. The cited feature sheet is titled 2024; it documents the manufacturer’s listed features, rather than serving as a current independent evaluation.
Instax Mini 13: best for easy framing and automatic exposure
Mini 13 is aimed more at convenience than extensive creative control. Fujifilm North America’s announcement of March 16, 2026 lists close-up mode, a selfie mirror, automatic exposure adjustment, and parallax correction. Fujifilm Corporation’s Japan announcement of April 16, 2026 also describes two- and ten-second self-timers and matching accessories, including a Mini-format album. Release and accessory details can vary by region (Fujifilm North America announcement; Fujifilm Japan announcement).

Which print format and workflow fit your photography?
Print shape changes how an image reads and how you might use it. Mini prints suit small, personal keepsakes; Square gives images a square frame; Wide offers a larger horizontal presentation. Fujifilm’s catalog identifies Mini, Square, and Wide as distinct film formats, with Wide twice as wide as Mini (Fujifilm’s camera catalog).

What to know about print look and film cost
Digital Camera World’s editorial comparison discusses trade-offs including ease of use, format, and creative controls. It describes Polaroid prints as having a more retro appearance and says Polaroid film can cost more per shot than Instax. Those are editorial observations, not a controlled comparison or a guaranteed current price difference; check local film prices before committing to a format (Digital Camera World’s instant-camera guide).
There is no robust comparative test dataset here to support a numeric ranking for image quality, satisfaction, or cost per shot. Treat “best” as a fit between the camera’s controls, print format, and your preferred way of shooting.
