Play Halo 2 next, then Halo 3. They continue the story of Halo: Combat Evolved in order, with Halo 3 bringing the original trilogy’s central events to a conclusion. If you would rather start a completely new campaign, choose Titanfall 2; if you want the original story with modern presentation, choose Halo: Campaign Evolved, which retells—not continues—the first game.
Your best choice depends on four things: narrative continuity, how much you want Halo-style sandbox combat, whether you need cooperative play, and which platform gives you practical access.

The short answer: what should you play after Halo: Combat Evolved?
There are two sensible meanings of “after.” The story answer is straightforward: Halo 2 is the immediate follow-up, and Halo 3 follows Halo 2. The alternative-game answer is broader: Titanfall 2 offers a self-contained first-person campaign with very different movement and level design, while DOOM is a more distant option for players who mainly want another energetic science-fiction shooter.
| What you want | Play this | Why it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| The next chapter of the same story | Halo 2 | It directly follows Combat Evolved and expands the series with new vehicles, weapons, environments and a playable Covenant Elite. | It is a continuation, so it assumes you want more Halo rather than a fresh setting. |
| The conclusion of the original trilogy | Halo 3, after Halo 2 | It picks up where Halo 2 ends and concludes the trilogy’s original events. | Starting here skips the middle chapter and weakens the story’s setup. |
| A new, tightly focused FPS campaign | Titanfall 2 | Its campaign is built around inventive level design, wall-running, double jumps and sliding. | It is not a sequel to Halo and its movement-heavy combat feels substantially faster. |
| The original story with updated presentation | Halo: Campaign Evolved | PlayStation describes it as a faithful, modernized remake of the Combat Evolved campaign with three bonus missions. | You are replaying the same core story, not moving the timeline forward. |
| A more aggressive, less Halo-like shooter | DOOM | It can satisfy a desire for fast science-fiction gunplay. | The available evidence does not establish it as a close match for Halo’s sandbox, pacing or narrative structure. |
Why Halo 2 is the correct next game
Halo 2 is the immediate narrative follow-up to Halo: Combat Evolved. The central conflict, characters and consequences of the first campaign continue rather than being reset for a new cast. If your question is “Should I play Halo 2 next?”, the answer is yes unless you specifically want a different type of game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
According to the game’s Metacritic listing, the sequel adds new vehicles, weapons and environments while also letting you play as a Covenant Elite. That last change matters: the campaign does not only widen the sandbox around the Master Chief; it gives the opposing side a playable perspective. The result is a continuation that changes the rhythm and viewpoint without abandoning the fundamentals that made the first game work.
What carries over from Combat Evolved
- A science-fiction military setting built around readable weapons, vehicles and enemy encounters.
- A campaign that treats arenas as spaces to approach in different ways instead of as a single corridor.
- The same broad conflict and story momentum, so the first game’s ending has immediate relevance.
What feels different
- Additional vehicles and weapons broaden the number of tactical combinations.
- New environments change the visual and combat vocabulary from mission to mission.
- The playable Covenant Elite introduces a different character perspective and changes how the campaign frames the conflict.
Do not choose Halo 2 because it is merely “similar” to the first game. Choose it because it is the next chapter. Playing unrelated games first is fine, but there is no narrative reason to insert a substitute between the two Halo campaigns.
Why Halo 3 belongs after Halo 2
Halo 3 follows Halo 2 and concludes the original trilogy’s events. The listing for the game explicitly describes its story as picking up where Halo 2 left off and concluding events that began in Combat Evolved. That makes the intended order Combat Evolved → Halo 2 → Halo 3, not Combat Evolved → Halo 3.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStarting with Halo 3 can still give you a playable campaign, but it removes the setup and consequences supplied by the middle game. Characters, factions and unresolved objectives arrive with less context, and the emotional payoff of the trilogy is less coherent. If you have finished the first game and have time for only one more Halo campaign, Halo 2 is the better immediate choice; if you can play two, continue directly into Halo 3.

Recommended story order
- Finish Halo: Combat Evolved, including the ending you have reached.
- Start Halo 2 without treating another game as a required bridge.
- Play Halo 3 after completing Halo 2 so its opening follows the preceding events naturally.
The easiest access route: Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the practical bundle route for readers who want to continue through the mainline games rather than locate each older release separately. GameSpot reports that the collection keeps older Halo games playable on Xbox and PC and that the mainline games in its list are available through Game Pass.
Catalogs, regions, editions and subscription terms can change. Before starting, check the current listing for your Xbox or PC storefront and confirm that the specific campaign you want is included in your edition or subscription. A Game Pass listing is an access condition, not permanent ownership, and a title can leave a catalog even when the collection itself remains available for purchase.
Checklist before downloading
- Confirm whether you are playing on Xbox or PC; the available edition and installation options can differ.
- Check that both Halo 2 and Halo 3 are included in the version you selected.
- Review the current Game Pass catalog if you plan to use a subscription rather than buy the collection.
- Allow storage for the collection’s components and any campaign content your platform installs separately.
- Check controller, keyboard and accessibility settings before beginning the campaign.
The collection simplifies the sequence, but it does not change the order: select Halo 2 after Combat Evolved, then select Halo 3.
What is most like Halo CE?
“Most like” depends on the feature you mean. No alternative in this list reproduces every part of Combat Evolved. Compare games by the dimension that matters to you rather than looking for one universal replacement.

| If you value this in Combat Evolved… | Best direction | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Continuing characters and plot | Halo 2, then Halo 3 | You remain inside the original trilogy’s story. |
| Vehicles, weapons and encounter variety | Halo 2 | The sequel expands the sandbox while changing viewpoints and environments. |
| A focused, memorable campaign | Titanfall 2 | The campaign is separate from Halo and relies much more on movement puzzles and speed. |
| The same campaign concept with newer presentation | Halo: Campaign Evolved | The story is the original one, rebuilt and adjusted rather than continued. |
| Fast, high-pressure shooting | DOOM | The tone and combat priorities are more aggressive and are not established as a close Halo match. |
Titanfall 2: the best new-campaign alternative
Titanfall 2 is the strongest alternative when you have finished Combat Evolved and want another campaign rather than another chapter of Halo. PC Gamer highlights its inventive level design and describes combat shaped by wall-running, double jumps and sliding. Those systems make movement a primary part of both navigation and fighting.
This is a new campaign, not an extension of the Master Chief’s story. The appeal is structural: short-to-medium campaign scenarios built around changing spatial ideas, rapid traversal and a shooter that asks you to keep moving. If you enjoyed exploring Halo’s arenas but want levels that actively test mobility, it is a good branch.
Choose Titanfall 2 when you want
- A self-contained story with no requirement to know Halo’s factions or timeline.
- Movement that is central to combat rather than an occasional traversal option.
- Level design that repeatedly changes how you read space and reach objectives.
- A campaign break before returning to the slower, more deliberate Halo rhythm.
Do not choose it expecting
- A continuation of the Master Chief’s narrative.
- Halo’s exact weapon handling, vehicle balance or encounter pacing.
- A replacement for playing Halo 2 if your priority is story continuity.
Think of Titanfall 2 as “another excellent FPS campaign with a different design philosophy,” not as “the next Halo.” That distinction prevents the most common mismatch in recommendations.
Halo: Campaign Evolved: a return to the same story
PlayStation describes Halo: Campaign Evolved as a faithful, modernized remake of the original campaign. Its page lists three new bonus missions and explains that players do not need to have played other Halo games because it tells the original story. That makes it appropriate for two groups: newcomers who want an updated entry point and returning players who want to revisit the first campaign.

It is not a sequel to Combat Evolved. If your goal is to discover what happens next, choose Halo 2. If your goal is to experience the same premise, missions and story foundation with updated presentation and targeted adjustments, choose Campaign Evolved.
What the remake changes in principle
Xbox Wire’s June 10, 2026 hands-on article quotes Creative Director Max Szlagor describing the team’s approach to targeted improvements in areas of frustration, slow pacing or navigation confusion. The same article quotes him calling one mission an example of the original game’s “core sandbox experience.” Those comments indicate an attempt to preserve the recognizable sandbox while addressing selected friction points, rather than replacing the campaign with an unrelated reinterpretation.
The three bonus missions are a listed feature count from the PlayStation page accessed in 2026. Treat them as additional content attached to a remake of the first story, not as evidence that the game advances the trilogy’s timeline.
Check availability before planning a playthrough
Platform and release details can change by region and edition. Verify the current PlayStation listing and the version sold in your country before assuming that the remake is available on your preferred hardware. The page’s “you do not need other Halo games” guidance applies to story prerequisites; it does not guarantee availability on every platform.

DOOM: a secondary branch for a different FPS mood
DOOM is worth considering only if your priority is another science-fiction first-person shooter and you are comfortable with a larger tonal and mechanical shift. The available evidence does not establish it as a close match for Halo: Combat Evolved. It therefore belongs after the more direct options, not beside Halo 2 as an equivalent sequel.
Use it as a palate cleanser when you want a more aggressive combat identity. Return to Halo afterward if what you actually miss is vehicle play, broad arenas, faction-based storytelling or the original trilogy’s continuity.
Choose your next game with this decision process
- Ask whether the story matters most. If you want the next events after the first campaign, start Halo 2. Do not substitute Titanfall 2 or DOOM.
- Decide whether you want continuation or repetition. A continuation means Halo 2; a return to the same core story means Campaign Evolved.
- Identify your preferred movement style. Halo’s sandbox approach points toward more Halo. Wall-running, double jumps and sliding point toward Titanfall 2.
- Check your platform and access method. Look up the current Xbox, PC or PlayStation listing, regional availability and subscription catalog before committing to a purchase or download.
- Choose the length of your plan. For one direct follow-up, play Halo 2. For the full original arc, schedule Halo 2 followed by Halo 3. For variety, play Titanfall 2 between Halo campaigns without treating it as required story material.
Suggested play orders for different readers
If you are new to the series
Play Combat Evolved, then Halo 2, then Halo 3. Use Campaign Evolved instead of the original only if its modernized presentation and current platform availability suit you better. You do not need to play Titanfall 2 or DOOM to understand Halo.

If you have just finished the original and want closure
Start Halo 2 immediately and continue into Halo 3. Avoid inserting the remake between them; it returns you to the beginning rather than advancing the plot.
If you want a break from Halo’s universe
Play Titanfall 2 next. Its campaign gives you a clean change of setting and a movement system that makes every encounter feel different without requiring a long series commitment.
If you remember the story but dislike older presentation
Choose Campaign Evolved if the current listing confirms it is available on your platform. Expect a retelling with three bonus missions, not a sequel.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping Halo 2 to reach Halo 3: This removes the chapter that connects the first game to the trilogy’s conclusion.
- Calling Titanfall 2 a Halo sequel: It is a distinct campaign whose similarity is limited to the broad FPS appeal.
- Confusing a remake with a continuation: Campaign Evolved revisits the original story.
- Assuming subscription access is permanent: Confirm the current catalog, region and edition before relying on Game Pass.
- Expecting every recommendation to match Halo equally: Compare story continuity, sandbox combat, movement and platform access separately.
- Starting from a platform assumption: Storefronts and availability differ, so check the listing for your own hardware and country.
Final recommendation
For the direct answer, play Halo 2 after Halo: Combat Evolved, then play Halo 3 to complete the original trilogy’s arc. Use Halo: The Master Chief Collection as the convenient Xbox or PC route when its current edition and catalog terms work for you. Choose Titanfall 2 when you want a new, movement-driven campaign; choose Halo: Campaign Evolved when you want to revisit the same story with modernized presentation and three bonus missions.
