Play Control if you want more of Remedy’s connected supernatural world; choose Alan Wake Remastered if you want Alan’s earlier story. Neither is required to understand Alan Wake 2. If you mainly want another horror game, Resident Evil 2 (remake), Silent Hill 2 (remake), and SOMA are distinct community-recommended alternatives—not continuations of Remedy’s fiction.

Is Control the best follow-up?
For players who want another piece of Remedy’s connected fiction, yes: Control is the clearest next stop. Remedy describes it as a supernatural third-person action-adventure, and PlayStation identifies it as part of the same universe as Alan Wake. The AWE expansion develops that crossover further. Control launched in 2019, according to Remedy’s current game page.
Expect a different balance of play. Control emphasizes supernatural action-adventure, while Remedy creative director Sam Lake calls Alan Wake 2 the studio’s first survival-horror game. If the combat and world-building mattered more to you than resource pressure, Control is a strong match; if you specifically want another survival-horror format, consider the genre alternatives above instead.

Should you play Alan Wake Remastered first?
Choose Alan Wake Remastered for the earlier Alan story and added context. Remedy describes it as an episodic psychological action-thriller centered on Alan searching for his missing wife. The remaster’s release year is 2021 on Remedy’s game page.
It is optional. In a PlayStation.Blog announcement dated 9 December 2021, Lake said previous games were not required to fully enjoy Alan Wake 2, though they add backstory. Remedy designed Alan Wake 2 to work as a standalone experience: its parallel stories and two protagonists, Alan and Saga, give newcomers an entry point while offering returning players connections to notice.

Want more Alan Wake 2 rather than a different game?
The expansions Night Springs and The Lake House continue within Alan Wake 2’s world. TIME’s 2024 coverage described them together as adding around four hours of gameplay; that is TIME’s estimate, not a universal completion-time guarantee. There is no established difficulty ranking here, and horror intensity can be personal. Before choosing, weigh the elements you want to repeat:

- Continuity: Control offers an official Remedy-universe connection; Alan Wake Remastered supplies earlier Alan background. The other recommendations are genre or mood matches, not lore continuations.
