If you want another daily puzzle built around guessing a word from meaning, try Semantle. It also measures semantic similarity and allows unlimited guesses. For a different kind of word challenge, Wordle uses letter feedback, while Connections asks you to group words by theme.
What makes a game like Contexto?
Contexto scores guesses by meaning, not by how their letters match the answer. Its official description says guesses are ranked against a vocabulary of 70,000 words: rank 1 is the secret word, and lower numbers mean closer meaning. The examples distinguish a related pair such as “ocean” and “sea” from the visually similar but semantically different “occasion.” Contexto’s about page explains the ranking.

That makes feedback style the key comparison. A close substitute should reward exploring semantic relationships; other daily word games may share the routine without sharing Contexto’s central mechanic.

Games like Contexto that focus on meaning
Semantle: the closest match
Semantle’s FAQ describes a game in which each single-word guess is evaluated for semantic similarity to the secret word. It allows unlimited guesses and, as the FAQ puts it, “is not about spelling; it’s about meaning.” That makes it the strongest match here for players who want an open-ended, meaning-first word hunt.
#1 Best Overall
Semantle says its model is based on word2vec and identifies its dataset as GoogleNews-vectors-negative300 from late 2021. This is a different stated basis from Contexto’s ranked 70,000-word vocabulary, so the games should not be treated as identical in scoring or results.
Semantle has one new word each day and an archive of earlier games. Its FAQ also describes account-based syncing for stats across devices. Contexto likewise has an archive, and its how-to page says it offers unlimited practice in addition to the daily puzzle. Contexto’s how-to-play page says a new daily puzzle appears at midnight UTC.

Daily word puzzles with different mechanics
Wordle: solve through letter feedback
Wordle is a better fit if you want deduction based on spelling and letter feedback rather than semantic ranks. It preserves the daily word-puzzle format, but it does not work like Contexto’s meaning-based guess ladder.
Connections: find relationships among words
The New York Times describes Connections as a game about finding themes between words. It suits players who enjoy spotting categories and associations, but it asks you to group a set of words rather than test guesses against a ranked secret word.

- Choose Wordle if you want to reason from spelling clues instead.
- Choose Connections if grouping words by shared themes sounds more appealing.
Contexto says one daily answer is shared worldwide, selected from a hand-reviewed list of common concrete nouns. Progress is stored in the browser on the device without an account. Its about page describes those details. If you play on more than one device, that local-storage setup is worth considering; Semantle’s FAQ, by contrast, describes account-based syncing for stats.

If you want puzzles away from a screen, The New York Times Games’ Puzzle Mania! collection is described by its publisher as suitable for solo play, family game night, or gifting. It is a physical collection of NYT games, not a Contexto adaptation, so it is an adjacent option rather than a substitute for semantic-ranking play. The publisher’s collection page identifies the book and Joel Fagliano.
