Windscribe Free is the clearest fit if you want a provider that explicitly documents Kodi use; Proton VPN Free is the better fit if avoiding a monthly data cap matters most; and PrivadoVPN Free is an option when its Android TV or Fire TV app is compatible with your device. None is a universal winner: Proton does not guarantee streaming access on its free plan, while Windscribe and PrivadoVPN each limit free data to 10 GB per month. Provider features and terms below were checked on October 7, 2026.
Free VPNs for Kodi compared
A VPN generally runs on the device or network alongside Kodi; Kodi does not require a VPN add-on for this setup. The practical differences are the data allowance, the app available for your streaming device, and what the provider does—or does not—promise about streaming access.

| Free plan | Data allowance | Streaming access | Documented device support | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN Free | No data or time limit, according to Proton. Proton’s free-plan page | Proton says it does not block streaming services on Free, but does not guarantee access to a range of services; guaranteed streaming and P2P support are listed among paid-plan features. Proton’s streaming support page | The cited free-plan information does not establish app availability for every Kodi device. | People who value uncapped data and accept that a particular stream may not work. |
| Windscribe Free | 10 GB per month with email, or 2 GB without, according to Windscribe. It estimates 10 GB as about three hours of HD streaming; this is the provider’s estimate, not a universal conversion. Windscribe FAQ and Android TV page | Windscribe explains how to use its VPN with Kodi, but that guidance is not a guarantee that a particular add-on or stream will work. | Windscribe documents a native app for Android TV and Google TV devices. Its FAQ says free accounts can cover unlimited devices. Windscribe Android TV page and FAQ | People using a compatible Android TV or Google TV device who want explicit Kodi setup guidance and can manage a data cap. |
| PrivadoVPN Free | 10 GB of full-speed data per month, according to PrivadoVPN. PrivadoVPN free-plan page | The page uses general streaming-support language but does not establish Kodi playback, access to a named service, or results for a particular add-on. | PrivadoVPN lists Android TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick apps, plus OpenVPN and WireGuard support. Check the exact device and OS. PrivadoVPN free-plan page | People whose device is on its supported-app list and whose viewing fits within the monthly full-speed allowance. |

Choose Proton VPN Free to avoid a monthly data ceiling
Proton says its free plan has no data or time limits, no ads, and a no-logs policy. It also lists OpenVPN and WireGuard, a kill switch, and DNS and IPv6 leak protection in its support information. These are Proton’s own descriptions of its service, not independent verification. The important trade-off for streaming is that Proton does not guarantee access to a range of services on Free. An unlimited allowance therefore does not mean unlimited access to every stream.

Choose Windscribe Free for the clearest Kodi instructions
Windscribe’s Android TV guidance specifically describes using its VPN with Kodi: connect to a Windscribe server first, then open Kodi. The free allowance is limited, however. Windscribe says 10 GB per month is about three hours of HD streaming, so it may be restrictive for regular viewing. Its FAQ gives 2 GB without email and 10 GB per month with email; verify current terms with the provider.
Consider PrivadoVPN Free if its app supports your device
PrivadoVPN lists apps for Android TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick and provides 10 GB of full-speed data each month on its free plan. Its cited page does not confirm Kodi-specific playback or access to any particular streaming service. Treat device app availability as a compatibility point, not proof that a stream will work.

How to use a VPN with Kodi
The simplest documented approach is to install and connect the VPN app on the same supported device that runs Kodi. Windscribe explicitly describes this order, and an independent setup guide also identifies direct installation on the Kodi device as the straightforward method. Security.org’s Kodi VPN setup guide
- Check device support. Confirm that the provider offers an app for your exact device and operating system. Android TV and Google TV support does not automatically establish support for every television, streaming box, or stick.
- Install the provider’s VPN app. Use the device’s app store or the provider’s official installation instructions. If the TV operating system does not support that app, direct installation may not be available; a different supported device or router-based setup may be needed.
- Connect to a VPN server. Open the app and connect before starting Kodi. Windscribe’s documented instruction is to connect first, then launch Kodi.
- Open Kodi and test the stream you intend to use. A VPN connection does not guarantee access to a specific service, add-on, region, or playback configuration.
What a free VPN can and cannot solve
- It can change the network route and visible IP address. That does not establish that a Kodi source is licensed or make unlawful activity lawful.
- It does not guarantee anonymity. A VPN is one network privacy measure, not proof that your activity cannot be identified.
- It does not guarantee a stream will play. Provider streaming claims do not validate every Kodi add-on, stream, location, or configuration.
- A free data allowance can limit viewing. Windscribe’s estimate illustrates the constraint, but actual usage varies with stream quality and other factors.
- Free and paid plans can differ materially. For example, Proton lists guaranteed access to a range of streaming services and P2P support as paid-plan features, not free-plan guarantees.
For jurisdiction-specific questions about Kodi add-ons and copyright, check the laws that apply where you live. Top10VPN’s Kodi guide notes that some add-ons are geo-blocked or may contain copyrighted content; that general observation is not legal advice. Top10VPN’s Kodi guide

How to choose based on how you watch
Occasional viewing
A 10 GB monthly plan may be workable if you watch only occasionally and keep an eye on usage. Windscribe’s own estimate is about three hours of HD streaming for 10 GB; do not treat that as a guaranteed allowance of viewing time.
Regular or extended viewing
Proton’s uncapped free allowance avoids a monthly data ceiling, but streaming access is not guaranteed on that plan. If predictable access or sustained streaming is essential, the free-plan claims here do not establish a no-cost option that guarantees it.

A TV box or stick
Check the VPN’s app listing for the precise operating system and model before relying on direct installation. Windscribe documents Android TV and Google TV support; PrivadoVPN lists Android TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick apps. The cited information does not verify every model within those categories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Plan terms and app availability can change. The provider pages cited here were checked on October 7, 2026; consult them again before installing or choosing a plan. Independent context on direct device installation is available from Security.org, while Tom’s Guide’s free-versus-paid VPN guide notes that free services with streaming support tend to have limited data and are better suited to occasional use than binge viewing.
