The right external drive for a Mac depends on what you store and how you use it: choose an SSD for portable work and frequent large-file transfers, or an HDD for high-capacity backup and bulk storage at a lower cost per terabyte. Macworld and PCWorld’s current guides cover a range of Mac-compatible options, but no single model is best for every workload. The recommendations below are attributed to those publishers; they are not independent tests by Freedom251.
SSD or HDD: which type suits your Mac?
| Drive type | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Portable SSD | Working files, frequent transfers of large files, and carrying storage with a MacBook. | Generally faster and more compact, but typically costs more per terabyte. |
| External HDD | Bulk storage and backup where capacity matters more than transfer speed. | More storage for the money, but slower and often less convenient to carry. |
Macworld and PCWorld frame the choice around speed, capacity, and portability. For its 2026 SSD guide, Macworld gives an illustrative comparison of about $200 for a 1TB portable SSD versus around $25 for a 1TB external hard drive. Those are editorial examples, not live quotes; prices change. Macworld’s 2026 Mac SSD guide and PCWorld’s external-drive guide discuss the broader trade-offs.

External SSDs Mac users should consider
Macworld’s 2026 Mac SSD roundup includes the following candidates. Its guide distinguishes products by interface, performance, ruggedness, host requirements, and price; the list is not a universal ranking for every Mac.
Recommended Free Tools
- LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5: a Thunderbolt 5 option to investigate when the Mac and cable can support its intended interface.
- OWC Express 1M2: a USB4 candidate for a compatible host and cable.
- SanDisk Extreme Pro SSD with USB4: another USB4 option to compare against the ports on the Mac in use.
- LaCie Rugged SSD4, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, and Samsung T7 Shield: portable models in Macworld’s roundup, including options where ruggedness and carry-friendly size matter.
- SanDisk Professional Pro-G40: also included in the roundup; compare its specific interface and host requirements with the Mac before buying.
See Macworld’s guide to external SSDs for Mac for its model-specific details and test findings. Match the drive’s interface to the Mac’s ports: an interface label such as USB4 or Thunderbolt does not by itself guarantee that a particular Mac, cable, or connection will reach the drive’s full performance.

External HDDs for backup and high-capacity storage
Macworld’s 2026 Mac HDD guide lists portable and desktop choices. The practical distinction is physical as well as economic: a desktop drive can offer substantial capacity but may require an AC adapter, while a portable drive is easier to carry.
- Seagate Expansion Desktop: Macworld lists models up to 24TB; the desktop drive requires an AC adapter.
- WD My Passport Ultra for Mac: listed up to 6TB, with Type-C connectivity.
- Seagate Ultra Touch HDD and WD My Passport: portable options in the guide.
- SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD: a model to consider when a more rugged external HDD is relevant.
- Seagate FireCuda Special Edition: another HDD candidate listed by Macworld.
- LaCie 1big Dock: a desktop HDD with hub and additional ports, suited to users who specifically want storage combined with dock functions rather than a simple portable drive.
Capacity figures above describe product ranges listed by Macworld, not a guarantee that every configuration is available in every market. Consult Macworld’s 2026 Mac HDD roundup for model-specific details. Check the selected drive’s power needs, included cable and ports; some drives may need reformatting before Mac use.

Check compatibility before you buy
Confirm the Mac’s port and the drive’s cable
Check the exact Mac model’s ports and the drive’s interface, then confirm that the included cable supports the connection you intend to use. A drive that supports USB4 or Thunderbolt can still operate below its top potential if the Mac or cable does not support the same capability. Some listed drives use USB-only interfaces, so do not assume every external SSD is a Thunderbolt device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConsider power and portability
Portable drives are convenient for travel and MacBook setups. Desktop HDDs are better suited to a stationary desk; some, including the Seagate Expansion Desktop listed by Macworld, require external AC power. Check package contents and port types rather than assuming an adapter or cable is included.

Choose a format for the way you use the drive
Some drives may need reformatting for Mac use. The right file system depends on whether the drive will be used only with Macs, shared with other operating systems, or assigned to a particular backup workflow. There is no single format that fits every setup, so check the drive maker’s instructions and the requirements of the software or devices that will use it before erasing or reformatting a drive.

A practical way to choose
- Start with the workload. Choose an SSD for portable working storage and regular large-file transfers; choose an HDD when bulk capacity or backup space is the priority and slower access is acceptable.
- Set the capacity you actually need. Compare the available capacities of the specific model configurations rather than treating a product line’s maximum as standard.
- Verify the connection end to end. Check the Mac’s port, drive interface, and cable together; consider whether a needed adapter is included.
- Check physical setup. Confirm whether the drive is portable or desktop-sized and whether it needs a separate power supply.
- Review Mac and cross-platform requirements. Confirm whether reformatting is required and whether the chosen format supports every computer and workflow that will access the drive.
- Compare current prices and availability. Price examples and product listings can change, so check current retailer listings and the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact capacity and model.
