What makes a programming language “esoteric”?
An esoteric programming language (often shortened to “esolang”) is designed around an unusual constraint, representation, syntax, or goal. It may explore a language-design idea, demonstrate a computational model, create a puzzle, or use humor instead of optimizing for maintainable production software. The point is often to make one aspect of computation unusually obvious—or unusually strange.
That unusualness is valuable in a classroom or self-study session. A mainstream language normally gives you variables, readable names, arithmetic operators, structured blocks, libraries, and a conventional text file. An esolang can remove those conveniences, change the shape of the source, or force the instruction pointer to move in an unexpected way. The missing abstraction becomes the lesson.

Do not confuse a language’s theoretical power with its practical usefulness or teaching difficulty. Brainfuck is described as Turing-complete, for example, but that does not make it a sensible production language or guarantee that every interpreter behaves identically. Always identify the exact dialect and implementation you are using.
Quick comparison: which language should you choose?
| Language | Best concept to demonstrate | How to teach it | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brainfuck | State, memory movement, loops, and character I/O | Trace the tape, pointer, and cell values in a step debugger; begin with a one-character echo | Short syntax does not make programs easy. Cell width, wrapping, and input behavior depend on the interpreter |
| Befunge-93 | Stack operations and non-linear control flow | Compare a two-dimensional instruction path with a conventional sequence of lines | Name the dialect. Other Befunge versions can have different limits and behavior |
| Piet | Visual encoding and the relationship between representation and execution | Read a small image as source and discuss how its layout affects comprehension | The available material does not establish that it is beginner-friendly or that it improves learning outcomes |
| INTERCAL or Shakespeare | Deliberately unusual syntax, conventions, and language-design humor | Use short examples as a contrast with normal language grammar | Best as comparisons, not as a substitute for a conventional first language |
| Malbolge | Extreme constraints and self-modifying execution | Study a simpler machine model first, then follow a tutorial with a debugger and manual translation | It was designed to be exceptionally difficult and is a poor first experiment |
Four comparison questions keep a lesson focused: Which mechanism does the language expose? How much syntax and interpreter setup does it require? Is the program textual, spatial, or visual? Which version or implementation does the documentation actually describe?
1. Brainfuck: the best first constrained machine
What the machine contains
Brainfuck uses eight commands and a tape-based model. A pointer selects one cell on the tape; commands move the pointer, change the selected cell, loop based on whether that cell is zero, and read or write characters. The small instruction set makes state visible: at every moment you can record the pointer position, the value in each relevant cell, and the next command to execute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat is the reason to start here. You are not learning a large library or a fashionable syntax. You are watching a tiny machine change memory one operation at a time.
A minimal tracing exercise
Use an interpreter that can single-step and display the tape. Confirm its cell width, whether values wrap at a limit, how the tape grows, and what it does at end-of-input before presenting those behaviors as universal. Then work through this one-character echo:
,.
- Run the comma command and record the character’s input value in the current cell.
- Run the period command and observe that the value is emitted as a character.
- Move the pointer left and right in a second trial, recording which cell changes.
- Add a loop and stop after every iteration. Ask what value makes the loop terminate.
- Repeat with a character whose code is not visually obvious, such as a digit, and compare the stored number with the character displayed.
The two-character program is intentionally unambitious. Its job is to establish the relationship between input, a cell, and output before loops add another source of state.
Use ASCII to expose representation
A common stumbling block is treating the character 5 as the numeric value five. In a character-oriented interpreter, 5 is represented by its character code (commonly an ASCII value), not by the integer 5. Have the learner print or inspect the cell value so the distinction is visible. This is a concrete route into data representation: the same bits can be interpreted as a number or as a character depending on the operation.

repeatedly decrements the current cell, moves to the next cell, increments it, and returns. When it finishes, the source cell has been reduced to zero. That makes an important side effect impossible to miss: a loop can move information while destroying the original. Trace both cells after every pass rather than describing the loop as a mysterious “copy.” It transfers a value, and whether that is a copy or a move depends on what happens to the source.
Projects that stay concept-focused
- Print initials: build the character codes for two letters and inspect the cells before output.
- Print digits: deliberately compare a digit’s character code with its numerical meaning.
- Echo input: read one character, output it, and then extend the exercise to a known-length sequence.
- Lowercase to uppercase: use the code difference between lowercase and uppercase letters, while stating the character-encoding assumption.
Each exercise should be accompanied by a trace table with columns for command, pointer position, affected cell, and output. The table is more educational than a finished “clever” program because it connects syntax to machine state.
What Brainfuck does not teach automatically
Brainfuck makes state and control flow explicit, but it does not provide readable identifiers, data structures, modular interfaces, or a practical standard library. A learner can become good at tracing a tape without learning how to design a maintainable application. Use it as a microscope for low-level mechanisms, then return to a conventional language to apply those mechanisms at a larger scale.
2. Befunge-93: control flow that moves through a grid
The central idea
In an ordinary text program, execution usually advances through lines or tokens in one predominant direction. Befunge-93 places instructions in a two-dimensional grid. Its instruction pointer can travel horizontally or vertically, so the physical path through the source becomes part of the control-flow model.
This is a useful second step after Brainfuck. Brainfuck asks, “What is the machine’s state?” Befunge asks, “Where is the machine going next, and how does the layout itself steer it?”
Teach the stack before clever paths
Befunge-93 also provides a stack-oriented way to handle values. Begin with a tiny program that places values on the stack and applies one operation. Draw the stack after every instruction, just as you drew Brainfuck’s tape. Then add a branch or direction change and mark the pointer’s coordinates on the grid.
- Reproduce the exact Befunge-93 grid from the lesson material.
- Mark the initial instruction-pointer position and direction.
- At each step, record the coordinate, instruction, stack contents, and new direction.
- Circle the instruction that changes direction or chooses a path.
- Rewrite the same logic as a conventional sequential flowchart and compare the two representations.
The comparison demonstrates that control flow is not inherently a list of lines. It can be movement through a space, with geometry carrying meaning.

Why the dialect matters
Use the name Befunge-93 when that is the version being taught. Do not assume that another Befunge implementation has the same grid dimensions, instruction set, wrapping rules, or computational properties. If a debugger or interpreter uses a different dialect, read its specification and state the difference before drawing conclusions.

3. Piet: when the program is an image
Source code as an abstract painting
Piet represents programs as abstract paintings rather than ordinary lines of text. The image is not merely an illustration of a program; it is the program’s representation. That makes Piet a strong discussion tool for the question, “What counts as source code?”
Ask learners to describe how they would read, edit, review, or debug an image-based program. Compare that process with reading a text file. The goal is not to claim that visual code is easier. The available material establishes the visual representation, but not beginner accessibility or a measured educational benefit.
A productive Piet lesson
- Show a small Piet image and have learners identify regions, boundaries, and the apparent execution route.
- Ask them to predict what information is encoded by color changes and movement through the image.
- Have them annotate the image with an execution trace rather than translating it immediately into text.
- Compare the annotated image with a conventional flowchart and a textual implementation of the same high-level task.
- Discuss which representation makes branching, repetition, and data movement easiest to inspect.
Piet is especially useful in a lesson on representation, visual parsing, or the design trade-off between compactness and readability. Avoid presenting it as a shortcut to programming competence.

4. INTERCAL and Shakespeare: language design through deliberate oddness
INTERCAL and Shakespeare are useful comparison points when the lesson turns from machine state to language conventions. They are associated with deliberately unusual syntax and humor, and a comparative overview places them among influential esoteric examples.
Use short excerpts to ask what a language normally assumes about names, commands, politeness, or grammatical structure. Which conventions help a reader predict behavior? Which conventions are being inverted for comic or experimental effect? This is a language-design exercise, not an invitation to use either language for ordinary application work.
Keep the examples small and place them beside a conventional-language equivalent. The contrast lets learners separate surface syntax from underlying operations: a strange sentence can still encode assignment, branching, or output, while a familiar-looking sentence can conceal an unusual execution model.
5. Malbolge: an advanced case study in deliberate difficulty
Why it belongs later
Malbolge was created by Ben Olmstead in 1998 with the goal of being exceptionally difficult to program. It is therefore the opposite of a gentle introduction. Its value is analytical: it lets an experienced learner examine how severe constraints, instruction transformation, and self-modifying behavior affect programming and language design.
Do not begin by asking a novice to write a useful Malbolge program. Begin with a simpler assembly-like machine model so that the later rules have something familiar to contrast with.

A staged way to study it
- Learn the simpler assembly language used as the tutorial’s preparation stage. Trace registers, memory, and jumps with a debugger.
- Debug the tutorial’s small cat program in the Malbolge environment so that input, output, and stepping are concrete.
- Read the specification alongside the reference interpreter, noting where an implementation detail is being relied upon.
- Translate the prepared program manually, recording every instruction change after execution.
- Run the translated version and compare its trace with the hand calculation. Investigate the first divergence rather than guessing at the final output.
Malbolge’s instructions undergo cyclic modification after execution. That rule makes the source and the running program diverge, a useful entry point into self-modifying code, interpreters, and the difficulty of reasoning about changing instructions.
What the resource ecosystem provides
The Malbolge language resource site provides a specification, reference interpreter, online debugger, assembler, and tutorials. Treat these as separate authorities: the specification defines intended rules, the reference interpreter demonstrates one implementation, and the debugger exposes a particular execution trace. If they disagree, record the version and investigate instead of silently treating one behavior as universal.

Start with Brainfuck and a step debugger. Require a written trace for pointer position, cell values, loop condition, and character I/O. Stop when the learner can explain a short program without relying on a memorized output.

Move to Befunge-93. Preserve the tracing habit, but replace the one-dimensional tape focus with coordinates, direction, and stack contents. Have the learner convert one path into a conventional flowchart.
Stage 3: change the representation
Use Piet for a session on source-code representation. Ask learners to annotate an image, predict execution, and discuss editing and review costs. Do not score the exercise as evidence that visual programming is easier.
Stage 4: discuss syntax and language culture
Bring in INTERCAL or Shakespeare as brief examples. Compare their unusual conventions with a familiar language and identify the same underlying operations beneath different wording.
Stage 5: reserve Malbolge for advanced analysis
Only after the learner can follow a simpler machine should you introduce Malbolge’s tutorial, debugger, and manual translation. The objective is to understand constraints and self-modification, not to produce an application.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming all interpreters behave alike
Cell size, wrapping, tape growth, input handling, and end-of-file behavior can be implementation choices, especially in Brainfuck. Record the interpreter and its settings in every exercise.
Best Value
Equating tiny syntax with easy programming
Eight commands can create a large cognitive load because every variable, pointer movement, and loop invariant must be tracked manually. Judge difficulty by the state a learner must manage, not by the number of symbols.
Calling computational completeness a practical recommendation
A language can express general computation and still be unsuitable for production, debugging, collaboration, or routine maintenance. Theoretical capability answers a different question from usability.
Using an unqualified language name
“Befunge” may refer to more than one dialect or implementation. Name Befunge-93 when that is the subject. Apply the same discipline to interpreter-specific Brainfuck behavior and to Malbolge tools.
Claiming a transfer effect that has not been measured
A 2025 arXiv paper, Let’s Take Esoteric Programming Languages Seriously, frames possible connections with programming ability, program comprehension and construction, and language design and implementation. It proposes questions; it does not provide a learning-outcome effect size that would justify saying these languages improve general programming skill. Present them as conceptual demonstrations and label the evidence accordingly.

What these languages can—and cannot—teach
Used carefully, esolangs make hidden assumptions visible. Brainfuck foregrounds mutable state, addresses, loops, representation, and side effects. Befunge-93 makes control flow spatial and stack operations tangible. Piet turns source code into an image and prompts questions about notation. INTERCAL and Shakespeare show that syntax and convention are design choices. Malbolge demonstrates how self-modification and severe constraints can make even simple intentions difficult to express.
They do not, by themselves, supply the broader practice needed for software engineering: decomposing requirements, naming abstractions, testing modules, reading documentation, collaborating, handling errors, or maintaining code over time. Pair each esolang session with a conventional-language exercise that applies the same concept in a readable, maintainable form.
Final recommendation
For most learners, use Brainfuck first and keep the scope narrow: tape, pointer, cells, loops, and character I/O. Add Befunge-93 when the learner is ready to see control flow as movement through a grid and values as a stack. Use Piet for a representation-focused lesson, and INTERCAL or Shakespeare for a short discussion of syntax and language culture. Save Malbolge for an advanced tutorial-led investigation of deliberate difficulty and self-modifying execution.
