There is no single best drawing app for every phone: the right choice depends on whether you use iPhone or Android, what you want to draw, and whether you need advanced tools or a free starting point. For iPhone painting and animation, consider Adobe Fresco; for a dedicated phone-oriented iPhone app, consider Procreate Pocket. Sketchbook and ibis Paint X are options to investigate on both iOS and Android, while Infinite Painter offers a limited free version and a paid full experience.
Which drawing app fits your phone and workflow?

App-by-app: strengths and trade-offs
Adobe Fresco: painting, vector tools, and animation
Adobe describes Fresco as free and lists raster, vector, and live brushes, unlimited layers, and frame-by-frame animation and motion presets. It says projects can sync and move between Fresco and desktop Photoshop or Illustrator. Adobe lists iPhone and iPad support; the sources cited here do not establish Android support. Its “thousands of brushes” and “unlimited layers” are Adobe feature claims, not independent assessments. Adobe Fresco
Procreate Pocket: a phone app for iPhone
Procreate Pocket is the iPhone-oriented phone app, distinct from Procreate for iPad. That distinction matters when choosing software for a phone: do not assume the iPad product is the phone version. The cited guides list prices of $5.99 and $6, but those are snapshots and should not be treated as current regional prices. TechRadar’s drawing-app guide and Tom’s Guide’s drawing-app guide

How to choose before you install
- Start with your phone’s operating system. If you use Android, investigate apps listed for Android, such as Sketchbook, ibis Paint X, or Infinite Painter. Adobe’s cited Fresco information identifies iPhone, iPad, and Windows—not Android. If you use iPhone, all five options above are listed for iOS or iPhone.
- Match tools to the work. Fresco is the clearest fit in this group for combining raster, vector, and live-brush work with animation. Sketchbook is positioned around sketching; ibis Paint X around its brush selection. Consider whether you need animation, vector drawing, or simply a comfortable place to sketch.
- Think about the phone screen. A phone has less drawing area than a tablet, and detailed work may feel cramped. Procreate Pocket is explicitly a phone-oriented iPhone app. Before committing to a paid app, try the free option or trial access offered in your store, if available, and see whether its controls suit your screen.
- Check export and handoff needs. Adobe says Fresco work can sync and move between its app and desktop Photoshop or Illustrator. For other apps, confirm the formats and transfer options you need in the app listing before building a workflow around them.
- Compare the actual cost, not just “free.” Free access may coexist with paid upgrades or in-app purchases. A one-time purchase differs from a free app with optional purchases; verify the current local store price and what the paid tier unlocks.
- Choose touch or a stylus based on comfort. Drawing by touch is possible. Adobe says Fresco supports stylus and touch input. A capacitive phone stylus may be useful, but compatibility and pressure sensitivity depend on the specific phone and stylus pairing; the cited information does not establish support for any particular combination.
What to check in your app store
- Search the exact app name in the App Store or Google Play on the phone you plan to use.
- Confirm the listing supports your device and operating system, then review its latest update and feature details.
- Inspect the displayed price, in-app purchases, or one-time purchase before downloading or upgrading; prices and tiers can vary by region and change over time.
- If you need to continue work on a computer, confirm export formats or sync behavior in the publisher’s current documentation. Fresco’s stated desktop handoff is between Fresco and Photoshop or Illustrator.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
