The Best Color E-Readers to Consider in 2026

Choose a color e-reader by screen size and how you read: compare Kobo’s Clara Colour and Libra Colour with the large, annotation-focused Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.

There is no single best color e-reader for everyone: a compact six-inch model suits portable book reading, a seven-inch reader adds room and controls, and a large writing-focused device is better for annotating documents. For most readers choosing among currently documented models, the Kobo Clara Colour is the compact waterproof option, the Kobo Libra Colour adds page-turn buttons and stylus compatibility, and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is for large-format reading and handwriting. The Scribe is a different class of device, not a pocket-size alternative.

How to choose a color e-reader

Start with what you read and how you interact with it. Color E Ink is useful for book-cover art, comics, illustrations, and color-coded highlights, but choosing a color screen does not automatically improve ordinary text reading. Screen size, physical controls, annotation tools, water resistance, and your preferred store or library workflow are more practical deciding factors.

  • Choose a compact screen if you want a reader that is easy to carry and mainly read novels or other text-heavy books on.
  • Choose page-turn buttons or stylus support if you want tactile controls or plan to mark up passages.
  • Choose a large writing-focused device if you regularly read and annotate PDFs, documents, or notebooks.

The models below are organized by fit rather than ranked by measured screen performance. The available product information does not establish a controlled comparison of color quality, battery life, or reading speed.

Best compact waterproof option: Kobo Clara Colour

The Clara Colour is Kobo’s six-inch color E Ink reader for people who want a compact device with waterproofing. Kobo’s U.S. catalog lists a Kaleido 3 screen, 16 GB storage, ComfortLight PRO, and a U.S. catalog price of $179.99 at the time accessed in 2026; that is a catalog snapshot, not a guaranteed sale price. Kobo’s product catalog gives the current listed specifications.

#1 Best Overall
Kobo Clara Colour | Colour eReader | 6” Glare-Free Colour E Ink Kaleido™ 3 Display | Dark Mode Option | Waterproof | Audiobooks | 16GB of Storage | White

  • 𝗡𝗢 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 - With multiple colours available at the touch of a finger, you can highlight your eBooks. Add, erase, or change colours as you go, and easily see all your highlights by chapter at a glance
  • 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗘𝗬𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨 – ComfortLight PRO automatically reduces blue light throughout the day, and you can personalize your reading settings via font size, line spacing, or even Dark Mode
  • 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗙 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗡𝗬𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 – Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating – waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water
  • 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗬 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 - Made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection

Kobo’s launch information says the Clara Colour has IPX8 waterproofing, supports highlighting and color-coding passages, and can play Kobo audiobooks over Bluetooth. It also supports library borrowing and Pocket integration. Kobo estimates 16 GB can hold up to 12,000 eBooks or 75 audiobooks; those are company capacity estimates, not independently measured counts, and actual capacity depends on file sizes. Kobo’s launch announcement describes these features.

This is the straightforward choice if portability and water resistance matter more to you than page-turn buttons or a writing-focused screen. The documented features establish highlighting, but do not establish stylus-based handwriting support for this model.

Rank #2
Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB (2024 model) – With color display that brings covers and content to life, now highlight in color – No Ads – Black
  • Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
  • A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
  • Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
  • Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Best for page-turn buttons and stylus compatibility: Kobo Libra Colour

The Libra Colour steps up to a seven-inch glare-free Kaleido 3 color E Ink screen and 32 GB storage. Kobo’s U.S. catalog lists page-turn buttons, adjustable ComfortLight PRO, and Kobo Stylus compatibility at $259.99 in its 2026 catalog snapshot. Prices and availability can change. Kobo’s U.S. catalog lists its specifications and price.

Choose it over the Clara Colour if you value physical page-turn controls, the larger screen, or the option to use a compatible stylus. Kobo’s 2024 launch release says the Kobo Stylus 2 is sold separately, so include the accessory in your decision if handwriting or markup is part of the plan. The launch-era description of the Libra as Kobo’s most affordable stylus-enabled reader should not be treated as a current lineup ranking. Kobo’s launch release covers stylus compatibility and the accessory.

Rank #3
Kobo Libra Colour eReader, 7” Color E Ink, Waterproof, White
  • BROWSE & READ EBOOKS IN FULL COLOR - Book covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, note-taking and more come to life. No glare in sunlight, no notifications - just you and your eBooks in full-color
  • YOUR JOURNAL, DAILY PLANNER AND MORE - Dive into your stories with colorful markups. With Kobo Stylus 2* compatibility (*sold separately), annotate, highlight, and note take your eBooks in color
  • READ COMFORTABLY, ALWAYS - Ergonomically designed with page-turn buttons, left/right screen rotation, full font size and margin customization, and landscape mode
  • IPX8 WATERPROOF EREADER - Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating - waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water
  • BETTER BY DESIGN - Thoughtfully made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection

Best for large-screen reading and handwriting: Kindle Scribe Colorsoft

The Scribe Colorsoft pairs a large display with handwriting and document tools. Amazon describes a color display, built-in light, color pen and highlighter options, shading, notebook organization, and a new rendering engine. It supports importing documents and exporting annotated PDFs through Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, as well as sharing notebooks with OneNote. Amazon says it is available now and directs buyers to their local Amazon store for pricing. Amazon’s Scribe Colorsoft information lists its features and availability.

A current comparison describes the Scribe Colorsoft as an 11-inch model and a premium-priced option. That makes it a fit for readers who want space for documents and handwriting, not a direct substitute for a six-inch reader carried everywhere. The comparison coverage provides that size and positioning context.

Amazon has also announced a separate, standard Kindle Colorsoft refresh. Do not confuse it with the Scribe Colorsoft: the Scribe is the writing-focused large-format Kindle, while the reported refresh is a seven-inch reader. As of October 4, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported the standard refresh would arrive on October 28, 2026, with a 16 GB model starting at $289 and a 32 GB aluminum version at $319. Those are reported launch details, not verified live prices, and the stated arrival date was still in the future on October 4. Check whether it has launched and confirm local pricing before buying. Tom’s Guide’s report covers the announced models and timing.

Other color readers to consider

Two other models appear in current comparison coverage, but the available details are not sufficient here for a full, directly verified buying recommendation:

  • PocketBook Verse Pro Color: TechRadar’s October 2026 comparison describes a six-inch screen, 16 GB storage, and no writing support. TechRadar’s comparison is the source for these details.
  • BOOX Go Color 7 Gen II: The same comparison describes it as Android-based, with 64 GB storage and writing support, and says it is not waterproof. TechRadar characterizes it as closer to an E Ink tablet than a dedicated reader. Verify manufacturer specifications for the exact generation before buying. TechRadar’s comparison discusses the model.

These are alternatives to investigate rather than extra picks in a definitive “four best” ranking: the available evidence does not support a fair, tested ordering across all the candidates.

Quick comparison

Model Screen and storage Documented strengths Price context
Kobo Clara Colour 6-inch color E Ink; 16 GB Compact; waterproof; color highlighting $179.99 in Kobo’s U.S. catalog when accessed in 2026; not a guaranteed transaction price.
Kobo Libra Colour 7-inch color E Ink; 32 GB Page-turn buttons; Kobo Stylus compatibility $259.99 in Kobo’s U.S. catalog when accessed in 2026; not a guaranteed transaction price.
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft 11 inches, according to a current comparison; storage not stated in the cited Amazon feature information Handwriting, notebook tools, and annotated document workflows Amazon directs buyers to local stores for pricing; no price stated in the cited Amazon information.
Kindle Colorsoft refresh (separate model) 7 inches; 16 GB standard version and 32 GB aluminum version, as reported Announced standard reader; not the Scribe Tom’s Guide reported $289 and $319 launch prices and an October 28, 2026 arrival date; date was still future as of October 4, 2026.

Which one should you buy?

  • Pick the Kobo Clara Colour for compact reading with waterproofing.
  • Pick the Kobo Libra Colour for physical page-turn buttons, a larger screen, and stylus compatibility.
  • Pick the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft when large-page reading, handwriting, and document markup are more important than portability.
  • Consider the separate standard Kindle Colorsoft refresh only after confirming its launch status and current local price; the announced date was October 28, 2026.

Before purchase, confirm the exact generation, regional availability, current price, and any accessory compatibility on the manufacturer’s or retailer’s live listing. For a color reader, the right choice depends less on a universal display winner than on whether you need a pocketable book reader, physical controls, or a writing surface.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
