There is no single best alternative camera app for every Android phone. Keep the built-in camera when its automatic processing and phone-specific features suit you; add another app when you need a particular control or workflow. Open Camera is a strong free starting point for manual controls, ProShot offers a dedicated manual interface, Camera FV-5 is aimed at technical still photography, Lightroom combines capture and editing, and Blackmagic Camera is a video-focused option. Before relying on RAW, manual controls, extra lenses, or advanced video features, check support on your exact phone.

Why your phone matters more than the app’s feature list
Android camera apps work through the camera hardware and software exposed by a particular phone. A feature advertised by an app may therefore be unavailable, limited, or behave differently on another handset. Open Camera’s Google Play listing specifically warns that some features depend on hardware, camera features, and Android version. Its developer also says the app cannot be tested on every Android device and recommends testing before an important shoot.
That makes a compatibility check more useful than choosing by feature count alone. Test the exact rear or front camera you intend to use, and confirm the result in the app rather than assuming that a menu option means the phone supports it fully.
- Manual controls: Check which exposure, focus, and other controls are actually available on the intended camera.
- RAW/DNG: Take a sample file and confirm that it saves and opens in your preferred editor.
- Multiple lenses: Verify that the app can access the particular lens you want; support should not be assumed across devices.
- Advanced video: Confirm that the intended resolution, frame rate, and other advertised modes work on your phone.

Open Camera: a free place to start with manual controls
Open Camera’s Google Play listing describes a broad set of options, including Camera2 manual controls, RAW (DNG), HDR, exposure bracketing, burst mode, histogram, zebra stripes, focus peaking, slow motion, and log-profile video. It also lists noise reduction, dynamic-range optimization, and camera vendor extensions. These are listed capabilities, not a promise that every option is available on every phone. Check the app on your handset before depending on one for a shoot.

ProShot is worth considering if you want a camera app organized around manual shooting rather than just an occasional extra setting. Its Google Play listing points prospective users to ProShot Evaluator to see which features their device supports. Use that check before relying on a particular capability. The listing’s “500K+ photographers” wording is a vendor-published promotional claim, not an independently verified usage statistic.
Camera FV-5: technical still photography
Camera FV-5 is positioned for DSLR-like manual control on mobile devices, with RAW capture intended for later processing. Its Google Play listing states that Android 5.0 or later is required for some features and displayed an update date of May 26, 2026. Neither that minimum for some functions nor the app’s RAW focus guarantees that a particular phone supports every feature; check compatibility on the device you plan to use.

Lightroom: capture followed by editing
Lightroom suits a workflow where you want to capture an image and move directly into editing in the same app. Its editing terms and available features can depend on the current plan, so consult the app listing before assuming a tool is included at no cost.
Blackmagic Camera: a video-oriented choice
Blackmagic Camera belongs on the shortlist when the priority is dedicated mobile video rather than still-photo controls. Phone compatibility and recording limits are model-dependent; consult its official listing for the specific device and modes you need.

When the built-in camera is the better choice
A third-party app is not automatically an image-quality upgrade. The manufacturer’s camera software may be better integrated with the phone’s lenses and image processing, including computational photography. If you mainly want dependable point-and-shoot results or a phone-specific shooting mode, compare the stock app first. Choose an alternative for a defined need—such as manual control, RAW capture, an editing workflow, or specialized video—not on the assumption that a different app will make every photo look better.
A practical way to choose
- Start with the camera you already have. Identify what it cannot do for your particular task, rather than replacing it by default.
- Match the app to the gap. Consider Open Camera for free manual options, ProShot for a dedicated manual interface, Camera FV-5 for technical stills, Lightroom for capture plus editing, or Blackmagic Camera for video.
- Check the exact phone and lens. Use an app’s compatibility guidance where available, then test the intended camera and feature on the handset itself.
- Confirm the workflow. For stills, check whether RAW/DNG is available and usable if you need it. For video, verify the modes and recording limits you require.
- Check current terms. Prices and plan or feature availability can change; consult the current app listing before purchasing or building a workflow around a paid feature.
Making the most of a camera app
Manual controls are most useful when they solve a specific problem, such as keeping exposure consistent across a set of shots or choosing focus deliberately. RAW/DNG is useful when you plan to process the image afterward; it adds a step rather than guaranteeing a better finished result. If you need steady hands-free framing for a self-portrait or group photo, a phone tripod with a Bluetooth remote is an optional accessory, separate from the choice of camera app.
