The best fit depends on what “across apps and files” means. For system-level context and app actions, consider Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on supported Macs. For work inside folders you choose, Claude Cowork is the clearest documented option. Gemini for Mac can use shared-window context, while Microsoft Copilot is a natural choice if your work already centers on Microsoft 365. ChatGPT is also available through Apple integrations for writing and image or document help.
These recommendations compare documented features and requirements, not hands-on performance: the official product information cited here does not establish a head-to-head winner for accuracy or productivity.

Which assistant fits the work you want to do?
| Assistant | Documented strength | How it gets context | Key requirement or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence and Siri AI | System-level context, on-screen awareness, and app actions | Apple platform features; individual apps can integrate content and actions through App Intents | Apple announced support for Macs with M1 or later with macOS 27; availability varies by region and language. [Apple, June 8, 2026] |
| ChatGPT through Apple integrations | Writing help and image or document understanding through Siri and systemwide Writing Tools | You can choose to send a question, document, or photo to ChatGPT when prompted | Available through Apple integrations without a ChatGPT account; linking one changes applicable data preferences. [OpenAI] |
| Claude Desktop with Cowork | Multi-step work involving local files, such as synthesis, organization, and document generation | Direct file access within folders you connect | Cowork is available in Claude Desktop on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. [Anthropic] |
| Gemini for Mac | Questions, drafting, summarizing, and working with shared-window context | You can share a window; Speak to Window can use highlighted content and work across windows | Speak to Window is rolling out. The Mac app requires macOS Sequoia 15 or later, Apple Silicon, 8 GB RAM, 200 MB free disk space, internet, and an eligible Google account. [Google] |
| Gemini Connected Apps | Looking up information in supported Google services | Connected Google services, subject to account and administrator settings | Work or school use depends on an eligible Workspace edition, Keep Activity, and administrator enablement; some actions are unsupported. [Google] |
| Microsoft Copilot | Work centered on Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams | In Microsoft 365 home apps, Copilot can use the open file or another file you ask it to inspect | The Mac app requires macOS Sonoma 14 or later; features, licenses, regions, and organizational policies affect availability. [Microsoft] |
The practical distinction is the context source: the active screen, a folder you select, a connected cloud service, or a productivity app. An assistant that can use one source does not necessarily have access to the others.

Best for system context: Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
Apple’s June 8, 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as supporting personal context, more app actions, and awareness of what is on screen—including files, images, or text. Apple says Apple Foundation Models run on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s privacy statement is specifically about requests handled by Private Cloud Compute; it should not be read as a blanket statement about every assistant or third-party model.

Apple’s developer materials describe app integrations through App Intents and a Foundation Models framework. Those are integration capabilities for developers; they do not mean every Mac app automatically gives Siri access to its content or actions. Apple’s announced Mac requirement is M1 or later with macOS 27, and its announcement says language and geographic availability varies. It notes that Siri AI is initially unavailable in China and that Mac users in the EU can access it when using a supported language. Check Apple’s current availability information for your Mac, region, and language.
Best for chosen local folders: Claude Cowork
Cowork is the strongest documented match when the task involves working directly with files in folders you choose—for example, synthesizing research, organizing files, or generating a document. Anthropic says Cowork runs code in an isolated virtual machine on the computer and limits file reads and writes to connected folders. It is available in Claude Desktop for macOS on paid Claude plans.

“Local file access” is conditional, not blanket access to the Mac. You must connect the relevant folder, and macOS permissions still apply. Anthropic distinguishes desktop extensions for tools running on your computer, local files, or system resources from remote connectors intended for cloud services. The needed setup depends on the task and the tool.

Google’s Mac app supports questions, drafting, summarization, brainstorming, coding help, and image analysis. Its shared-window workflow can provide context from a window; Speak to Window can use highlighted content, refine text, summarize desktop files, insert content into the active window, and work across windows. Google says Speak to Window is rolling out, so it may not yet be available to every user.

The app requires macOS Sequoia 15 or later, Apple Silicon, at least 8 GB of RAM and 200 MB of free disk space, an internet connection, and a personal Google account or an administrator-enabled work or school account. Treat those as Google’s stated requirements and check its current Mac help page if you are installing later.
Best for Google Workspace lookups: Gemini Connected Apps
Connected Apps are a separate choice from sharing a Mac window: they let eligible Gemini users reach supported Google services. For work or school accounts, Google says availability depends on Workspace edition, Keep Activity being enabled, and administrator enablement. Gmail, Calendar, Chat under certain conditions, Docs, Drive, Keep, and Tasks are among the listed services; access also varies by account, plan, location, language, device, and app.

Google documents meaningful action limits. For example, Gemini cannot create or delete Gmail messages through Connected Apps, manage Drive folders or files, or access Drive pictures and videos through the described connection. If your task depends on one of those actions, do not assume that connecting the service makes it possible.

Copilot is the most natural starting point if your day already runs through Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Microsoft describes connections to those apps and multi-step tasks through Cowork. The Mac app requires macOS Sonoma 14 or later. Microsoft says availability varies by country or region; some features require particular licenses or may be disabled by an organization administrator.

Keep the privacy scope specific. Microsoft says prompts, responses, and file contents in its Microsoft 365 home apps are not used to train foundation models, and that Copilot in those apps can use the open file or another file you ask it to inspect. That statement applies to the specified home subscriptions and personal Microsoft accounts. Microsoft directs users to different terms for the standalone Copilot app and organizational accounts.
Use ChatGPT through Apple when you want help without a separate sign-in
Apple’s integrations let users invoke ChatGPT from Siri and systemwide Writing Tools, including for writing and image or document understanding. Siri asks before sending a question or an attached document or photo to ChatGPT. OpenAI says you can use the integration without a ChatGPT account; connecting an account can provide additional features and makes the account’s data preferences applicable.
OpenAI’s stated handling differs by sign-in state. For unauthenticated requests through Apple, OpenAI says it processes conversations to provide a response and comply with law, does not receive the user’s IP address, does not store requests, and does not use them to train models. If you link an account, conversations may be saved to chat history and account settings—including model-improvement controls—apply.

Check permissions before sharing files or screen content
No assistant should be assumed to “see everything” on your Mac. macOS asks for user consent to access protected locations such as Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes. Accessibility, full-storage, and automation permissions have separate controls. What an assistant can do depends on the mechanism you enable: sharing a window, connecting a folder, allowing an extension, or authorizing a suite connector.
- Share only the window or folder needed for the task, where the product lets you choose.
- Review macOS permission prompts and the assistant’s connected folders, extensions, or services before granting access.
- For work or school accounts, check whether an administrator enables or restricts the feature.
- Check the product’s account and data settings before sending sensitive content; privacy statements differ by integration, account type, and app.
How to choose without a misleading “best overall” ranking
- For on-screen context or system actions: check Apple Intelligence and Siri AI compatibility and availability for your Mac, region, and language.
- For hands-on work in selected local folders: consider Claude Cowork if you have an eligible paid plan and are comfortable connecting the necessary folders.
- For drafting from a window you are using: consider Gemini for Mac, but confirm Speak to Window has reached your account.
- For Google-service lookups: check Gemini Connected Apps eligibility and whether its supported actions cover your task.
- For Microsoft 365 files and workflows: check Copilot licensing, app availability, and any workplace administrator restrictions.
- For Apple’s writing and Siri workflows: use ChatGPT through Apple if its opt-in handoff fits your needs; decide whether linking a ChatGPT account is worthwhile for you.
The official product documentation establishes feature boundaries and requirements, not comparative accuracy, task success, or productivity gains. Choose by the context and actions you need, then verify the current requirements and permissions for that specific workflow.
