There is no evidence-based universal winner among the agent gateways covered here. Google Cloud Agent Gateway is the broadest documented fit when you need to govern both traffic into agents and traffic from agents to tools or other destinations. Microsoft Foundry’s AI gateway is a narrower option for eligible MCP traffic in Foundry, and it is documented as a preview. The agentgateway project offers configurable, CEL-based authorization, but its authorization documentation alone does not establish production support, performance or comparative security.
The right choice depends first on which traffic path you need to control, then on identity, policy scope, content inspection, deployment fit and maturity. The product descriptions below reflect vendor or project documentation, not independent testing or a like-for-like benchmark.

What an agent gateway should govern
An agent gateway sits in the path of agent interactions so that traffic can be routed and policies applied. That does not automatically mean it controls every interaction: ingress from a client to an agent and egress from an agent to a tool, API or other destination are separate paths. Identify both—and any routes that can bypass the gateway—before comparing products.

Google describes its Agent Gateway as an entry and exit point for agent interactions, covering client-to-agent ingress and agent-to-anywhere egress. Microsoft’s documented Foundry gateway routes eligible MCP traffic through a governed endpoint. The agentgateway authorization documentation describes rules for traffic and selected backends, including MCP servers and tools. These scopes are different, so their capabilities should not be treated as interchangeable.

How the documented options compare
| Option | Documented capabilities | Important boundaries to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Agent Gateway | Ingress and egress governance; agent identity and registry; IAM policies; optional Model Armor and semantic governance; network-layer observability; encrypted connections using mTLS; and protocol translation such as MCP, REST and gRPC. Google Cloud’s overview describes the product scope. | Designed around Google Cloud’s platform and resource model. Governed agents require identity and registry setup. Confirm availability for the required region and runtime. The setup guide says VPC Service Controls are supported only for deployments created after September 8, 2026 using the agent connectivity template for VPC connectivity. |
| Microsoft Foundry AI gateway | A governed entry point for eligible MCP traffic, with documented authentication, rate limits, IP restrictions, routing and audit logging. The documentation lists managed identity, key-based authentication, custom OAuth passthrough and unauthenticated servers where applicable. | The feature is in preview. Only new MCP tools created in the Foundry portal that do not use managed OAuth are routed through the gateway. It is configured at the Foundry resource level and requires a connected AI gateway and API Management policy permissions. Check the Foundry governance documentation for current eligibility. |
| agentgateway | Authorization policies use CEL rules that can match request headers, JWT claims, source IPs and MCP tool names. Documented scopes include traffic, frontend network, selected backend and MCP-specific authorization. | The authorization documentation establishes policy options, not comparative operational quality, support terms, performance or production readiness. Verify deployment model, integrations, release status, maintenance and security review for your environment. |
This is a screening comparison, not a security ranking. The reviewed documentation does not provide comparable performance or effectiveness results, so it does not support numeric rankings or a claim that one option is more secure overall.
Which option fits which governance need?
Choose Google Cloud Agent Gateway when you need ingress and egress governance
Google’s documented scope spans traffic from clients to agents and from agents to destinations. Its governance model combines agent identity, a registry, IAM controls and optional content-oriented controls. It is the clearest candidate here when those paths both need governance and the workload fits Google Cloud’s deployment model. Confirm the specific region, runtime, resource setup and network design; the overview is not a guarantee that every feature is available in every configuration.

Google says each governed agent must have a unique SPIFFE ID and that traffic from unidentified agents is blocked by default. Its IAM overview describes mTLS and DPoP in the identity flow. In practical evaluation, check how the implementation represents the human user, agent workload and delegated authority, and how credentials and access are revoked.

Choose Microsoft Foundry’s gateway when the workload fits its MCP preview scope
Foundry’s gateway may fit a deployment built around new MCP tools created in the Foundry portal, provided those tools do not use managed OAuth. Its documented controls include authentication, rate limiting, IP restriction, routing and audit logging. Because the capability is in preview and has explicit eligibility limits, check the actual tool creation and authentication path before designing around it. Do not assume that existing tools or managed-OAuth tools will be routed through the gateway.

Evaluate agentgateway when you need rule-level authorization flexibility
The project’s authorization documentation describes CEL rules with conditions based on request attributes, JWT claims, source IP and MCP tool names. That can be relevant when policy needs to distinguish particular tools, backends or network contexts. The cited page is a technical description of authorization; it does not answer operational questions such as support commitments, scale, availability or integration coverage. Validate those separately before production adoption.
How to evaluate a gateway before enforcing it
Use a proof of concept to test the actual traffic and identity paths rather than relying on feature labels. The checklist below turns the key governance questions into testable requirements.

- High-Performance Routing Capabilities Supports up to 3 Gbps total line rate (packet size dependent) and up to 1M packets per second under ideal conditions, suitable for high-speed wired networks.
- Includes NAT, VPN support, VLAN segmentation, and UniFi security features for managing secure and segmented networks
- Map the traffic. Draw the paths among users or clients, agents, sub-agents, MCP servers, APIs and network boundaries. Mark which paths must cross the gateway and identify any direct routes that could bypass it.
- Verify identity and attribution. Test whether audit and policy decisions can distinguish the human principal, agent workload and delegated authority. Check token lifetime, revocation and what happens when an agent is unidentified.
- Test authorization scope. Try deny-by-default behavior, narrow grants per tool or destination, policy updates, and requests to unknown destinations. Confirm that the policy can express the permissions your organization needs—not merely broad allow or deny rules.
- Separate authorization from content inspection. Ask whether inspection applies to prompts, tool arguments, tool responses and agent outputs, and what it is intended to detect. Google documents Model Armor and semantic governance as optional controls; availability and combinations vary by traffic direction. Do not assume that authorization detects prompt injection, harmful content or data leakage, or that an advertised filter covers every threat.
- Inspect audit evidence. Check that events include enough context for incident review, such as principal, agent, destination or tool, decision and time. Verify retention and export integration in the configuration you will actually deploy.
- Validate deployment fit. Confirm regional availability, private networking, protocol compatibility, runtime integration and scaling or availability requirements for the workload. Do not infer these details from a product’s broad description.
- Start with observation where supported. Google recommends dry-run or audit-only policy validation before explicit enforcement. Exercise permitted, denied, misidentified and unavailable-destination cases, inspect the resulting logs, and only then decide whether to block live traffic.
- Record maturity and eligibility. Capture preview or general-availability status and the exact feature conditions that apply. Recheck these details before procurement or rollout because product scope can change.
Where gateway controls fit in an agent security design
A gateway is an enforcement point, not a complete security program. Its value depends on whether relevant traffic actually passes through it, whether policies identify the right user and workload, and whether the configured rules match the permissions the organization intends to grant. Network controls, identity, authorization, content inspection and auditability address different concerns; verify each independently rather than treating the word “governance” as a guarantee of coverage.
For Google Cloud, the documented egress model blocks traffic unless an IAM policy grants the required permission, and the setup guide recommends registering destinations for more granular resource and tool controls. That makes destination registration and narrow policy testing part of deployment design, not optional housekeeping. Across all three options, keep a record of what is in scope, what is not, and how exceptions are reviewed.
