Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is no longer playable: Activision shut down its servers on April 17, 2026. Don’t buy a Backbone One for that game. The controller may still be worth considering for Call of Duty: Mobile, other supported games, or remote play—but an approximately $80 price is only a useful benchmark, not a verified live deal.
Warzone Mobile is offline, even if it’s still on your phone
Activision says Warzone Mobile servers went offline on April 17, 2026. The game had already been removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Store in May 2025. Because it depended on Activision’s online services, an existing installation does not provide a way to keep playing offline. Activision’s service-change notice also says in-game access and guest accounts ended with the shutdown, and previously purchased content and unused COD Points were not refundable.
Activision says the last opportunity to make real-money purchases was May 19, 2025. Its shutdown notice points players toward Call of Duty: Mobile and Call of Duty: Warzone on PC and console. Those are alternatives, not a renamed or revived version of Warzone Mobile.
Why the Backbone One was once a good match
Backbone and Activision promoted controller support when Warzone Mobile launched. A physical controller suited the game’s movement, aiming, shooting, and other console-style inputs better than touchscreen controls might for some players. Backbone announced its collaboration in March 2024, and its product material promoted the game alongside other compatible titles.
#1 Best Overall
- IMMERSIVE XBOX DESIGN: Built in collaboration with Xbox, this controller for iPhone 15/16/17 and Android devices mirrors the familiar Xbox Wireless Controller layout, delivering responsive joysticks, tactile buttons, and smooth control for console-style play on the go. Includes 1-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate access, redeemable via the Backbone app.
- NEXT-LEVEL COMPATIBILITY: This gaming controller supports Android phones and iPhone models with a direct USB-C connection. Jump into cloud gaming, native apps, or console streaming with instant recognition and no extra setup, keeping your focus on gameplay.
- RESPONSIVE PRECISION CONTROLS: Designed for serious players, this mobile controller includes an improved D-pad, secure magnetic adapters, and lag-free USB-C input. Whether you’re in a shooter, sports sim, or RPG, enjoy precise performance across genres and platforms.
- ALL-IN-ONE GAME HUB: Integrated with the Backbone app, this phone game controller organizes titles and services in one place. Access Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, stream from your Xbox or PC with Remote Play, or explore Apple Arcade and Steam Link effortlessly. And with Backbone+, you can unlock free instant access to a wide variety of games, enhancing your experience by letting you play immediately without paying for extra features.
- PLAY ANYWHERE, ANYTIME: With its low-latency USB-C link, this phone gaming controller avoids charging needs and minimizes input delay. Use the 3.5mm audio jack or Bluetooth through your phone for immersive sound, and enjoy reliable gameplay anywhere you take it.
That was a historical compatibility pitch, not a reason to buy the controller now. Older Backbone pages may still name Warzone Mobile; Activision’s later server-shutdown notice is the relevant source for whether the game can currently be played. See Backbone’s March 2024 announcement for the former promotion.
What the Backbone One can still be used for
Call of Duty: Mobile
Backbone lists Call of Duty: Mobile among games that support its controller. Activision also identifies it as a continuing mobile option. It is a separate game from Warzone Mobile, with its own content and progression; don’t assume that purchases, progress, or features transfer between them. Check the game’s current availability and controller behavior on your phone before buying. Backbone’s controller-game FAQ explains that support depends on the individual game.
Other mobile games
The controller can be useful with other native games that support gamepads. Controller compatibility is a property of each game, not a guarantee that every mobile game will respond to the Backbone One. Backbone’s game FAQ provides a compatibility reference, but a game may also require you to enable controller input or finish its tutorial before the controls work.
Rank #2
- Collapsible and compact design
- Lowest latency connection
- Play games that support controllers
- Capture clips and screenshots
- Pass-through charging and 3.5mm headphone jack
Remote play and cloud gaming
For PlayStation Remote Play or Xbox Remote Play, the game runs on your own console and streams to your phone; the Backbone One does not replace that console. Xbox Cloud Gaming is different: Backbone says it can be used without owning an Xbox if you have the required Game Pass subscription. Service availability, eligible games, and subscription terms are separate from the controller purchase. Backbone says launching Xbox Cloud Gaming from within its app may require Backbone+, whereas the physical controller itself does not require a Backbone+ subscription for ordinary use with compatible games. See Backbone’s console and service FAQ for its stated requirements.

The connector is the first compatibility check. The right version also needs to fit your phone’s dimensions, operating system, and any case or camera bump. Backbone’s product page directs iPhone 15 and 16-series buyers to a USB-C model rather than the Lightning version; check the current compatibility information for your exact phone before ordering.
| Phone or device | What to check |
|---|---|
| Older iPhone with Lightning | Choose the Lightning Backbone One, then confirm your exact iPhone is supported. |
| USB-C iPhone | Choose a USB-C model and verify support for your iPhone generation. |
| USB-C Android phone | Choose a USB-C model, but confirm the exact Android phone is supported; the connector alone does not guarantee fit or feature compatibility. |
| Tablet or unusually large phone | Verify physical fit before buying. A telescoping phone controller may not accommodate a larger device. |
- Check whether your phone case must be removed.
- Check that the camera bump and phone dimensions do not interfere with the controller’s fit.
- If you want PlayStation Remote Play on Android, Backbone’s FAQ says you need the PlayStation Edition; it says iOS users can use any Backbone One Edition. Verify current device and edition requirements before purchase.
What an $80 price does—and doesn’t—tell you
A Best Buy search result showed a Backbone One model for $79.99, but that result had been crawled about three months before August 18, 2026. It does not establish that the offer is available now. On August 18, 2026, Backbone’s U.S. product page showed the Lightning 2nd-generation model at $99.99. Both figures are historical price observations, not a guarantee of today’s price, stock, or terms.

| Price reference | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $79.99 | Best Buy search-result price for a Backbone One model; result crawled about three months before August 18, 2026. Not verified as a live offer. |
| $99.99 | Backbone U.S. product-page price shown for the Lightning 2nd-generation model on August 18, 2026; not a current-price guarantee. |
Before treating an offer as a deal, confirm the exact generation, connector, edition, condition, seller, shipping cost, return policy, and warranty. Around $80 may be reasonable if you already have a compatible phone and will use the controller for supported games or streaming. It is poor value if your only reason to buy is Warzone Mobile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need Backbone+ or a console?
You can use the physical controller with compatible games without subscribing to Backbone+. Backbone says you can launch a compatible game from the phone’s home screen rather than through its app if you are not a subscriber. Some app integrations—such as launching Xbox Cloud Gaming from within the Backbone app—may require Backbone+.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate the controller from what you want to play: native mobile games run on the phone; remote play streams from a console you own; and cloud gaming depends on an eligible service and its subscription terms. The controller supplies inputs, not a console, game license, cloud subscription, or access to a discontinued game. Backbone’s FAQ on console and service requirements describes these distinctions.

If a supported game doesn’t respond to the controller
A controller that connects physically may still fail to work in a particular game. The game may not support controllers, may require a setting change, or may not enable controller input until after its tutorial. Try these checks in order:
- Confirm that the Backbone One’s connector matches your phone and that the exact phone model is compatible.
- Update the phone’s operating system and, if applicable, the Backbone app or controller firmware.
- Launch the game directly from your phone’s home screen, then complete any tutorial the game requires.
- Look in the game’s settings for a controller or input option.
- Test the controller in another known-supported game. If it works there, the problem is more likely specific to the first game than a defective controller.
Backbone’s game-compatibility FAQ notes that some games require switching from touchscreen to controller controls or completing a tutorial first.
Who should consider buying it?
- Skip it for Warzone Mobile: the game’s servers are offline.
- Consider it for Call of Duty: Mobile or other supported games: first confirm compatibility with your phone and the games you actually play.
- Consider it for remote play or cloud gaming: check the console, service, edition, and subscription requirements for your intended setup.
- Compare other controller styles if portability is not your priority: a Bluetooth controller with a phone clip is less compact but may suit someone who wants one controller for both console and mobile play. Razer’s mobile controllers, GameSir’s controller range, and the Xbox Wireless Controller are options to compare by exact model and phone compatibility; this is not a claim that one has been tested against another here.
Activision’s shutdown notice and the official Call of Duty: Mobile page provide the relevant game information. For current controller compatibility, start with Backbone’s game FAQ and its product page.
