For the maximize-button popup, open Settings > System > Multitasking, expand Snap windows, and clear Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button. To stop Windows 11’s built-in snapping altogether, turn off the main Snap windows switch. These controls are documented by Microsoft at Snap your windows.
Snap Layouts are several related Windows features
“Snap Layouts” is often used for the flyout that appears when you hover over a window’s maximize button, but Windows 11 exposes several separate behaviors in the same settings area:
- Snap layouts flyout: layout choices from the maximize/restore button or, when available, Win + Z.
- Top-of-screen Snap bar: layout controls that appear while dragging a window to the top edge.
- Snap Assist: suggestions for other open windows after you snap the first one.
- Snap groups: previously snapped combinations surfaced from the taskbar, Task View, and Alt + Tab.
- Edge and corner snapping: automatic placement when a window is dragged toward a screen edge.
You can disable one surface without removing the others. The labels can vary slightly by Windows 11 build, feature update, or managed-device policy, but look for the Snap windows section under System > Multitasking.
Disable only the maximize-button Snap Layouts popup
This is the least disruptive choice if you still want to snap windows with dragging or keyboard shortcuts.

- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Select System, then Multitasking.
- Expand Snap windows.
- Clear Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button.
Snapping and other options remain available according to their own switches. This checkbox removes the maximize-button hover flyout; it does not automatically remove the top-edge bar or Snap Assist suggestions.
Disable the top-of-screen Snap bar
If the unwanted interface appears when you drag a window upward, leave the main Snap windows switch on and clear Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen in the same section. The maximize-button flyout can remain enabled or disabled independently.
Turn off all built-in Windows Snap behavior
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Expand Snap windows if necessary.
- Turn the main Snap windows toggle off.
This turns off Windows’ built-in Snap system, including its layout interface, automatic window arrangement, and related Snap Assist behavior. It also removes the convenience of native edge and keyboard snapping. A separate window manager, such as PowerToys FancyZones, can continue to operate because it has its own settings.

Disable Snap Assist, Snap groups, or relaxed edge snapping separately
When the master switch is on, individual options let you tailor the experience:
| What you see | Setting to change |
|---|---|
| Suggested windows after snapping one window | Clear When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it. |
| Snapped combinations in the taskbar, Task View, or Alt + Tab | Clear Show my snapped windows when I hover over the taskbar apps, in Task View, and when I press Alt + Tab. |
| Snapping activates before reaching the screen edge | Clear When I drag a window, let me snap it without dragging all the way to the screen edge. |
| Maximize-button flyout | Clear Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button. |
| Top-edge layout bar | Clear Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen. |
Microsoft lists these controls in its Snap windows guidance.
Enable Snap Layouts again
- Return to Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn on Snap windows.
- Expand the section and enable the behaviors you want, especially When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it, Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button, and Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen.
With Snap enabled, the flyout may also be available for the active window through Win + Z, depending on the Windows build and configuration. Microsoft documents that shortcut and the maximize-button method on its Snap support page.

Open Multitasking settings with a direct shortcut
If you cannot find the page in Settings:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
ms-settings:multitasking. - Press Enter.
That URI opens the Multitasking settings page directly. Microsoft lists it in the Windows Settings URI reference.
If Snap still appears after you change the setting
Check that you changed the matching option
The maximize-button checkbox does not control the top-edge bar, and the Snap Assist checkbox does not control either layout flyout. Use the symptom-to-setting table above, then verify the master switch if you intended to disable everything.

Check independent window managers
PowerToys FancyZones and similar utilities can draw their own layout overlays even when Windows Snap is off. Disable or reconfigure the utility separately. FancyZones supports custom zones and can optionally override Windows Snap shortcuts such as Win + Left, Win + Right, Win + Up, and Win + Down; see Microsoft’s FancyZones documentation.

Managed computers
On a work or school computer, policy may restrict changes or configure PowerToys centrally. Microsoft documents ADMX, Group Policy, and Intune management for PowerToys at PowerToys Group Policy. That is separate from the ordinary Windows Snap toggle.
Should you use PowerToys FancyZones?
Use FancyZones when you want custom zones rather than no layouts. It is a free, open-source Microsoft utility collection, but it requires installation, adds another configuration layer, and can conflict with native Snap shortcuts if both systems are active. For simply hiding a popup, Windows’ own Multitasking settings are faster and safer. See the PowerToys overview for the utility collection.

Older Microsoft Q&A answers discuss a SnapAssist Registry value, but that approach may affect only Snap Assist or one interface surface. It is harder to audit and reverse than the supported Settings controls. Use the Settings path first; consult Microsoft Q&A only when investigating a specific legacy issue, and do not assume a Registry change disables every Snap feature.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hide the maximize-button popup but keep keyboard snapping?
Yes. Leave Snap windows enabled and clear only Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button. Keyboard and edge behavior then follow their separate settings.
Why does the top bar remain after I disabled the maximize-button option?
They are independent controls. Clear Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen as well.
Does turning off Snap windows disable PowerToys FancyZones?
No. FancyZones is an independent window-layout system and must be disabled or configured separately.
Do I need to restart Windows?
Normally no. Reopen the affected app first; restart Windows Explorer or Windows only if the interface appears stuck.
