The Audio Bugs Nobody Warns You About When You Build a Mobile Looper

Crackle, lag, interruptions, seam clicks and timing drift have different causes in mobile loopers. Learn how to diagnose and test each on Android and iOS.

A looper can crackle, feel sluggish, resume unexpectedly, or click at the loop point—and those symptoms do not share one cause. Crackle often points to missed real-time audio deadlines; lag is a latency problem; a click can come from a discontinuity in the recorded waveform even when playback is otherwise clean. Diagnose each separately, then test the result on the routes and devices your app supports.

Start by identifying which audio bug you have

  • Crackle or dropouts during playback: audio work missed a deadline, or the audio path otherwise failed to deliver samples on time.
  • Monitoring feels delayed: input-to-output latency is too high for comfortable playing, even if playback is stable.
  • A click at every wrap: the end and beginning of the loop may not join smoothly; this can happen without an underrun.
  • A late or clipped first note: investigate capture timing, control latency, or when recording begins, rather than assuming the loop seam is at fault.
  • Playback stops or changes after a call, device connection, or route switch: handle interruptions and route changes as part of the audio lifecycle.

Log these symptoms separately. A buffer adjustment may reduce crackle but worsen monitoring latency, and it will not repair a waveform discontinuity at a loop boundary.

Why does audio crackle when you lower the buffer?

Real-time audio has deadlines: the app must supply or consume each block of samples before the audio system needs it. Android’s low-latency guide notes that callbacks can arrive only a few milliseconds apart, so unpredictable work in the callback can cause missed deadlines. Google Oboe describes glitches as commonly associated with buffer underruns, but buffer size is only one possible cause.

Review callback work for allocation or freeing memory, file or network I/O, waiting on mutexes or other locks, sleeping, and expensive one-time computations. Keep the callback bounded and predictable. Move non-real-time work elsewhere and communicate with the audio thread using a design that does not make it wait on those tasks.

  • 3 band EQ and high pass filters give you maximum control and eliminate unwanted noise, resulting in a cleaner mix
  • 1 Knob compressors allow easy control: Resulting in livelier guitars, punchier bass lines, a tighter snare and a cleaner vocal sound.

Other possibilities include rendering bugs, content underflows, scheduler preemption, workload-dependent clock changes, and defects in the device’s audio path. Track xrun counts where available—for example, Android’s AAudioStream_getXRunCount()—but a clean count does not rule out every device-path problem.

Use symptoms to narrow the cause

  • If a much larger buffer does not help and the problem is worse on slower devices, investigate whether DSP work exceeds available real-time compute.
  • If glitches are sporadic, coincide with other system activity, or become less frequent with a larger buffer, scheduler preemption is one possible explanation.
  • If glitches appear only on a particular device or route, compare the actual stream configuration and route before treating the issue as a general buffer-size failure.

These are diagnostic clues, not definitive tests: Oboe’s troubleshooting notes explain mechanisms, and device behavior can differ.

How should you tune buffer size without making a looper feel slow?

A deeper buffer gives the system more time to handle variable workload and may reduce underruns; it also adds delay between playing a sound and hearing it. Tune against both stability and playable monitoring latency. Android recommends tuning after opening the stream: Oboe’s default usable buffer is two bursts, and the guide shows two burst sizes as an AAudio starting point. Increase the size if a small buffer produces underruns, then measure the latency and glitch behavior on target devices and routes. Two bursts is a starting point, not a universal setting.

Android Developers’ 2026 low-latency guide publishes these OboeTester round-trip examples for particular configurations. They are device-dependent configuration results, not a promise for a specific looper or route:

Example configuration Published round-trip result
Following the guide’s listed recommendations 20 ms
Performance mode not set to low latency 205 ms
AAudio at 44.1 kHz 160 ms
Oboe sample-rate conversion at 44.1 kHz 23 ms

The same Android guide cautions that results can vary greatly between devices. These figures are not market averages and do not isolate what a particular app will achieve. Oboe’s discussion of a hypothetical 4 ms buffer alongside a roughly 100 ms workload or scheduler response illustrates why tiny buffers can be fragile; it is a mechanism example, not a universal measurement.

Why might Android ignore the low-latency path you requested?

A request for a mode or format does not prove that the opened stream received it. Android recommends Oboe for the lowest possible latency: Oboe uses AAudio on Android 8.1 (API level 27) and later, and OpenSL ES on earlier Android versions. Android also recommends low-latency performance mode and exclusive sharing mode, while actual capabilities depend on the device.

Mackie Mix Series Mix8 8-Channel Mixer, Black
  • 8-channel compact mixer with proven high-headroom, low-noise performance
  • 2 mic/line inputs with studio-level audio quality, pan, level and overload indication and phantom power for studio condenser mics
  • 2 stereo 1/4" line inputs
  • 3-band EQ on all channels with clean, precise tone shaping
  • 1 aux send with stereo 1/4'' returns

Check the opened stream and active route, not only the values your app requested. Android’s guidance recommends using the device’s natural sample rate where possible—commonly 48 kHz—or using Oboe for conversion if the app needs a different rate. Framework resampling can add latency and prevent the expected low-latency path.

Oboe’s FAQ lists several other reasons the expected path may not be available, including unsupported Bluetooth low-latency streams, native sample-rate mismatches, missing callbacks, unsupported channel counts, and exhaustion of available low-latency streams. For a layered looper, mixing loop layers inside the app and sending them through one audio stream can avoid consuming a separate playback stream for each layer when stream availability is constrained.

How should an iOS looper handle interruptions and route changes?

On Apple platforms, interruptions are normal audio-session events. An incoming call, for example, can take audio focus and pause playback. Observe audio-session interruption notifications and define what the app should do when an interruption begins and ends.

Apple’s archived Audio Guidelines By App Type advises recording apps to request recording permission explicitly, update the interface when interrupted, and avoid resuming recording or playback unless the app was active before the interruption. Its guidance says: “When an interruption ends, don’t start playing or recording audio again unless the app was doing so prior to the interruption.” Because that guide is archived, verify API names and requirements against the SDK version you ship.

A route change—such as connecting or disconnecting audio hardware—can change sample rate, buffer duration, or latency. Query the relevant audio properties after the route changes and adapt the app’s timing and user feedback rather than assuming the previous configuration still applies.

Why does a looper click at the loop point?

A clean audio stream can still contain a click. If the waveform jumps abruptly from the end of the loop to its beginning, or either endpoint has a non-zero amplitude that does not join smoothly, the discontinuity can be audible. Check the recorded audio at the wrap point before increasing the playback buffer: a larger buffer does not fix a discontinuous seam.

Fades or crossfades can smooth a seam. Apply them carefully, because a long or poorly placed fade can soften attacks and blur transients. Apple’s AVFAudio sequencer example sets a clip’s volume to zero and ramps it up to avoid clicks when playback begins away from a zero crossing. The example reports about 5 ms of render-buffer smoothing for that implementation; it is an illustration, not a guaranteed duration for other engines or devices.

Separate a seam click from a late first attack

If the first note is late or clipped rather than merely clicky, check when capture starts and whether playing early or controller latency is involved. Loopy Pro discusses compensation and threshold-recording controls in its own product context; those are troubleshooting examples, not universal mobile-platform features.

How can you prevent timing drift across repeated loops?

Do not judge transport accuracy from one wrap. Apple’s sequencer example avoids its built-in looping option and schedules each iteration at the loop boundary, citing accumulated floating-point error as a source of timing drift. For a looper, anchor transport to stable frame or host-time positions and schedule subsequent boundaries from that timeline rather than repeatedly adding an imprecise duration.

Test many consecutive wraps, including under the routes and workload your app supports. Listen for accumulating timing error as well as seam clicks: they are distinct problems and may need different fixes.

A practical mobile-looper test checklist

  • Record the device, OS version, active input/output route, sample rate, channel format, and actual stream configuration for each test.
  • Exercise low buffer settings, then increase buffer depth if underruns occur; compare glitch frequency with monitoring feel.
  • Stress the callback path for unpredictable work, and monitor xrun counts where the API provides them.
  • Test built-in speakers, wired or USB audio where supported, and Bluetooth separately; do not assume a route uses the same low-latency path.
  • On Apple platforms, test interruption begin/end events, recording permission, and route changes, including the app’s resume behavior.
  • Inspect loop start and end waveforms, test any fades or crossfades for transient loss, and listen through many consecutive wraps.
