The Android VPN I Use for Gaming—and When I Leave It Off

Proton VPN has useful Android routing controls for gamers, but no evidence here shows it is the fastest. Check your own latency and exclude the game if needed.

If you want one Android VPN to try for gaming, Proton VPN is a practical option because its Android app documents server selection, WireGuard UDP, and split tunneling. That does not make it the fastest VPN for games: the available sources provide no controlled gaming-latency comparison, and routing a game through a VPN can affect latency. Whether to use it depends on your connection, the game, and whether you need the game’s traffic protected by a VPN.

Why a VPN can affect gaming

A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server before it reaches the game service. That extra route can change latency, and the result depends on your network and the paths between your phone, VPN server, and game endpoint. A nearby VPN server is a sensible place to start, but proximity alone does not guarantee a better route or lower ping.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Google’s Pixel Phone Help gives a direct warning: “For example, you may exclude a multiplayer game if you don’t want latency from the VPN to impact your game play.” This is Google’s example for Pixel VPN settings, not a universal instruction for every Android VPN app.

Why Proton VPN is a reasonable Android option

Proton’s Android app can connect to a fastest server automatically or let you select an available server, according to Proton’s Android setup guide. Automatic selection is convenient; choosing a server lets you try a location that may give your game a better route. Neither option guarantees low ping.

Proton also lists WireGuard UDP as an Android protocol option and describes WireGuard as fast, modern, and lower in battery use. Those are Proton’s descriptions, not independent gaming benchmarks or proof that WireGuard gives the best ping in a particular game. Proton recommends leaving Smart Protocol enabled in its protocol guidance.

The feature that matters most if you want to keep the rest of your phone on a VPN while gaming is split tunneling. Proton’s Android split-tunneling instructions explain how to exclude selected apps from the VPN or use inverse mode to include only selected apps. The support page identifies split tunneling as a paid-plan feature.

Choose whether the game should use the VPN

Exclude the game when latency is your priority

If you do not need the game’s traffic to pass through a VPN, exclude the game app from the tunnel. In Proton VPN, use Android split tunneling and select the game to exclude. This lets other selected phone traffic remain on the VPN while the game connects outside it. The exact menu labels may change as the app is updated.

Keep the game in the tunnel when VPN routing is the priority

If you have a specific privacy or network reason to route the game through a VPN, leave it included. Try an available server near you or near the game’s service region, then check the game’s own latency indicator. A VPN may raise or lower latency on a particular route; there is no general guarantee that it improves a game connection.

How to test it on your own phone

  1. Set a baseline: On the network you normally game on, play the same game and note its displayed latency. Keep the phone, game region, and network conditions as consistent as possible.
  2. Connect the VPN: Try Proton’s automatic server choice first, or select an available server and record its location. Use the same game region and note the in-game latency again.
  3. Compare like with like: Repeat the comparison at similar times and over the same Wi-Fi or mobile connection. One match can be affected by server load or changing network conditions, so treat a single result cautiously.
  4. Decide per game: If VPN routing worsens latency and the game does not need VPN protection, exclude that app through split tunneling. If the VPN route is acceptable and you want the game traffic tunneled, keep it included.

This is a suggested way to evaluate your own connection, not a published test result. The cited pages do not provide side-by-side latency measurements by game, phone, carrier, server region, or network.

What this recommendation does—and does not—mean

Proton VPN has documented Android controls that make it a reasonable service to try if you want server choice, WireGuard UDP, and app-level routing controls. The evidence does not establish it as the best Android gaming VPN, show that it lowers ping, or support the claim that it is the only suitable option. If gaming performance is your only goal, compare your in-game latency with and without a VPN before deciding to keep one connected.
