AI reliability and safety depend in part on the data behind a system: what it learns from, what it is adapted with, what it is tested against, and what it handles in use. Weak, unbalanced, poorly documented, or exposed data can undermine trustworthiness—but data is not the only cause of AI failures, and no single data-quality fix makes a system trustworthy.
Why data belongs in any serious conversation about AI risk
AI trustworthiness is broader than whether a model produces plausible answers. NIST identifies characteristics including reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability, privacy, and fairness. These concerns apply across design, development, deployment, use, and evaluation—not just when a model is trained. (NIST AI Risk Management Framework; NIST AI RMF FAQ)

Data is a through-line across that lifecycle. Training examples can shape what a model learns; adaptation data can shift its behavior; evaluation data can reveal or conceal weaknesses; and operational data can expose privacy or security risks. That does not mean every failure is caused by data. It means organizations cannot assess a system’s risks responsibly without asking what data it uses, how that data is handled, and whether the system remains suitable in its actual context.

Does the data fit the intended context?
A dataset can be large and orderly yet still be a poor fit for the people, tasks, or conditions where a system will be used. NIST warns that inaccurate, unreliable, or poorly generalized systems can increase negative risks and reduce trustworthiness. A model that performs well on familiar examples may not behave reliably when the deployment context differs. (NIST AI Resource Center: Trustworthy AI Characteristics)

- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
Is it sufficiently representative, and have imbalances been considered?
NIST’s Generative AI Profile connects data imbalance with harmful bias and recommends defining minimum data-quality criteria. The practical question is not simply whether a dataset has enough rows; it is whether important populations, conditions, and edge cases are represented well enough for the intended use. NIST does not provide one universal formula for scoring data quality, so a single cleanliness or volume metric cannot settle the question. (NIST AI 600-1: Generative AI Profile)
Can the organization explain where data came from and how it was curated?
The Generative AI Profile recommends documenting data-collection and curation policies, including how third-party data and intellectual property will be used, stored, and protected. Documentation helps people responsible for a system understand what entered the pipeline and what controls apply; it is not, by itself, proof that the data is appropriate or that the system is safe. Are privacy and intellectual-property risks controlled?
Collection and retention decisions affect exposure. NIST’s profile identifies leakage of personally identifiable information as a risk to consider and recommends policies for data collection and retention. It also calls for organizations to define how third-party data and intellectual property are handled. These are operational questions: what is collected, how long it is kept, who can access it, and what safeguards apply. (NIST AI 600-1: Generative AI Profile)

Can data be tampered with, lost, or disclosed?
Data security includes protecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability. NIST’s risk material identifies data poisoning and potential exfiltration of training data or intellectual property as concerns. Safeguards therefore need to address unauthorized access and disclosure as well as tampering and loss; a dataset that was appropriate when collected can still become a source of risk if it is not protected. Will evaluation continue as the system and its use change?
A one-time evaluation cannot establish that a system will remain suitable indefinitely. NIST’s profile supports re-evaluation, while the AI RMF treats evaluation as part of the broader lifecycle. Organizations should consider whether changes in the system, its data, or its use call for renewed assessment rather than assuming that an earlier result still applies. (NIST AI 600-1: Generative AI Profile; NIST AI RMF FAQ)
Use NIST’s framework to organize the work
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) 1.0 was released on January 26, 2023. It is voluntary guidance, not a universal legal mandate. NIST’s official AI RMF page says: “The NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) is intended for voluntary use and to improve the ability to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems.” The framework groups its work into four functions. They are an organizing structure, not a required sequence. (NIST AI Risk Management Framework; NIST AI RMF FAQ)

NIST provides a practical case for treating data as a significant part of AI risk management: its guidance addresses collection, retention, minimum quality, imbalance, curation, third-party data, privacy, security, and re-evaluation. It also identifies risks such as poisoning and exfiltration, and warns about systems that are inaccurate, unreliable, or poorly generalized. Those points support scrutiny of data practices, not a claim that data explains every failure.

The guidance does not offer a universal data-quality score, quantify the share of AI failures attributable to data, or say that better data alone can make a system trustworthy. Reliability and safety also depend on how a system is designed, evaluated, deployed, monitored, and governed. NIST released its Generative AI Profile, NIST AI 600-1, on July 26, 2024. Its current AI RMF overview says the framework is being revised; the AI Resource Center says the Playbook will be updated after that revision. These status details can change, so consult NIST’s current pages for the latest information. (NIST AI Risk Management Framework; NIST Generative AI Profile overview; NIST AI RMF Playbook)
