Install The Aether by pairing the exact Minecraft version, mod loader, and Aether file, then place the mod in a matching profile. The project has Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge distributions rather than one universal download. The latest files listed for Minecraft 1.21.1 are Fabric 1.5.11 (October 3, 2025) and NeoForge 1.5.10 (September 28, 2025); older 1.20.x and 1.19.x files remain available. Once installed, build a Glowstone frame and activate it with water to reach the sky dimension.

What The Aether adds
The Aether is the original sky-dimension mod maintained by The Aether Team. Its world consists of floating islands with new ores and resources, mythical creatures, hostile encounters, and dangerous dungeons. CurseForge metadata displayed 79,709,529 total downloads with the project update shown in 2025. That figure is a platform counter, not a measure of current compatibility; always choose a file whose Minecraft version and loader match your installation.
Check compatibility before downloading
Aether compatibility is file-specific. Do not assume that a file for one loader will work with another, or that a mod built for one patch release will load on a nearby version.

The Minecraft version, loader, and Aether jar form a three-way match. A correct jar with the wrong loader is still an incompatible installation.
Prepare a safe installation
- Back up any world you might open with the mod. Keep the backup outside the active instance so it cannot be overwritten.
- Create a fresh profile for the target Minecraft version instead of changing a profile that contains unrelated mods.
- Decide on one loader—Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge—before downloading. Use only files built for that loader.
- For a first test, leave unrelated mods out. Add them later, one at a time, after Aether launches successfully.
- Keep normal Overworld supplies available. Food, tools, building blocks, and spare equipment should be gathered before opening the portal.
Install with the CurseForge App
- Open the CurseForge App and search for Aether.
- Select the verified project published by TheAetherTeam. This avoids similarly named or unofficial uploads.
- Create a new profile, or open an existing one, and select the Minecraft version required by the Aether file.
- Select the same loader shown on that file: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. Do not change the loader after downloading unless you also obtain a jar built for the new loader.
- Install the Aether file in the profile and allow the app to place it in the instance’s
modsfolder. - Launch the profile once. At the title screen, open the Mods screen and confirm that Aether is listed.
- Create a short test world, enter it, and verify that the game remains stable before opening a valuable survival save.
The January 18, 2026 CurseForge FAQ recommends this verified-project workflow, with the profile’s Minecraft version and loader set to match the selected file.

Install manually
- Install the loader installer for the exact Minecraft version you intend to run. A 1.20.1 loader profile, for example, is not interchangeable with a 1.20.2 profile.
- Download the Aether
.jarfrom the verified project on CurseForge or Modrinth. Read the file page’s Minecraft and loader labels before downloading. - Start the loader profile once so it creates its instance directories.
- Open that profile’s instance folder and locate its
modsfolder. With separate launchers, the folder location varies; use the launcher’s “open folder” command rather than guessing a global path. - Copy the Aether
.jarinto the profile’smodsfolder. Keep the file unchanged and do not place a Fabric jar in a Forge or NeoForge profile. - Launch the same profile, inspect the Mods screen, and generate a test world.
If the loader requires additional libraries, install the dependencies listed on the Aether file page for that exact version. Do not copy dependencies from a different Minecraft release.
Verify the first launch
What a successful check looks like
- The selected loader profile reaches the title screen without a crash.
- Aether appears in the Mods screen with the expected version.
- A new test world loads and can be saved and reopened.
- The portal can be built and activated, described in the next section.
If the test fails
Stop before opening the backed-up survival world. Recheck the Minecraft version, loader, and Aether file as a group. Then remove every unrelated mod and launch with only the loader and Aether. If the minimal profile still fails, read the crash report and the loader’s log for the first reported error. The available project guidance establishes the need for matching versions and loaders, but it does not provide one universal fix for every crash.

Build and activate the Aether portal
- In the Overworld, assemble a portal frame from Glowstone blocks.
- Use water to activate the completed Glowstone frame, following the portal behavior described by the official README.
- Enter the activated portal. It transports the player to the Aether dimension.
Bring supplies before stepping through. The Aether is a separate survival progression, so its floating islands, ores, creatures, and dungeons are not a replacement for preparing in the Overworld.
Survival tips for the Aether
Carry a complete starting kit
Take food, a reliable weapon, tools, blocks for bridging, and replacement equipment. Gathering these in the Overworld is safer than expecting the new dimension to provide everything immediately.

Explore methodically
Floating islands can make navigation and recovery difficult. Mark routes, secure a defensible foothold, and avoid committing to a dungeon run until you know how to return to safety.
Separate testing from important saves
Use a separate profile or a copied world when trying a new Aether version. This is especially important for CircleCI bleeding-edge builds, which the README says are unfinished and may contain serious issues.
Expect a new progression loop
Collect Aether ores and resources, learn the behavior of its creatures, and prepare for dungeon encounters as distinct stages rather than treating the dimension as a single short excursion.
Play Aether with friends
The Aether Team states that the mod is fully compatible with multiplayer. Compatibility still depends on an identical installation on every participant’s side.
- Choose one Minecraft version and one loader for the server.
- Install the same Aether build on the server and on every client. The file name, version, and loader must agree.
- Keep the server’s other mods synchronized with the clients as well.
- Start the server, connect with a test account, and enter the portal before inviting players to a valuable world.
- Back up the server world before changing Minecraft, the loader, or the Aether build.
A client running Fabric 1.21.1 and a server running NeoForge 1.21.1 are not a matching multiplayer setup, even though the Minecraft number is the same. The loader and mod build must match too.
Choose between stable and experimental files

For most players, a stable file on one of the README’s listed versions—1.19.2, 1.19.4, 1.20.1, 1.20.2, or 1.20.4—or a verified newer file such as the listed 1.21.1 builds is the sensible starting point.
Troubleshooting checklist
The launcher crashes before the title screen
- Confirm that the profile’s Minecraft version exactly matches the Aether file.
- Confirm that the profile’s loader exactly matches the jar: Fabric with Fabric, Forge with Forge, or NeoForge with NeoForge.
- Remove unrelated mods and test again.
- Check the crash report for the first mod or dependency named in the error, then install the version required by that profile.
Aether is missing from the Mods screen
- Verify that the jar is in the active profile’s
modsfolder, not a different instance. - Confirm that the launcher started the intended loader profile rather than vanilla Minecraft.
- Check that the downloaded file is the Aether project from the verified publisher.
Friends cannot join
- Compare the Minecraft version, loader, Aether version, and other mod files on the server and every client.
- Replace any file downloaded for a different loader.
- Test with a minimal server containing only the loader and Aether before adding the rest of the modpack.
The world behaves unexpectedly after an update
Stop the server or close the game, restore the pre-update backup, and test the new build in a copied profile. Do not repeatedly open the original world while changing versions.
